Can I please have an honest opinion on the game. Is it worth the entry fee?

I have been looking at info about ESO for a while and checked out Reddit, this site, and even the official Elder Scrolls Online forums.

While most official reviews and previews claim that there are no issues, other players are complaining about bots, hackers, and spammers. Then I found another site. Mmogfails, and it slams ESO pretty bad.

It links to a lot of quest bugs that halt progress, and uses complaints from Reddit and the official forums to support arguments, making them seem pretty well informed.

Now I have been a huge Oblivion and Skyrim fan and want to continue my adventure in ESO. Are there really as many issues as Mmogfails says? Are there bugs that wipe inventories, remove bank slots, halt progression, and get you stuck; or is it more along the lines of launch problems that most MMO's have?

Thanks for all the advice people.

Wow. The game has a dupe, and it's an easy one. They also knew about it for a while.

Someone linked to this review on the official forums:

This is pathetic.

All the good things I said about this game are now irrelevant. Ignore my praise. Had I known about this, I would have never bought this joke of a game.

Go play Daggerfall or Morrowind, one is like 5 dollars, the other is free. If you really like Elder Scrolls, they are the most true to the series and they have the most content. Your problem has been solved.

I really enjoy this game. As a person who never gets involved with the story - for some reason this one got me. On the other hand, my friends do not like this game. So I'm playing alone, sadly. Should you buy it? No idea. I'd say it's a 50/50 shot. If you decide to pick it up, then I suggest taking your time. Follow a decent amount of the story, or at least the main story. You might find the game refreshing. This is my favorite MMO that's been released post WoW. It's challenging and interesting. It's more of a dark setting, especially compared to something like wildstar which is brightly colored. People complain about the combat, but I play a mage, and not a melee character. So I can't comment much on that. You have a lot of options as far as building your character. I love the graphics. There are bugs. MMOs always have bugs. I haven't come across a game breaking one. The quest bugs I have found have workarounds, and often times require logging out and back in again.

As far as advice - The only thing I can say is give this game time to grow on you. When I played beta - I wasn't really happy with the game. I tried a few classes and finally found one that I enjoyed. Perhaps the same will work for you. Hope this helps!

Daggerfall looks terrible. I simply can't bring myself to try it out. Yes, I am a graphics snob. Sorry.

I am also waiting on a few mods that bring Morrowind into the Skyrim or Oblivion engine. Morrowind looks ok, but I would rather play it in a purtier engine.

This opinion is coming from someone who is not loyal to any brand, nor a fanboy.

I am nearly level 40 in ESO. In my time I have come across 2 quest bugs (I had to wait for one, and use /reloadui for the other), no bank issues, a couple of lag issues (rare), and been disconnected maybe 3-5 times total since 5 day early start.

The people experiencing these bugs are a very, very small minority. Exceptionally small actually. While in game it is rare to here anyone bring up these issues. I am not exaggerating when I say its rare.

As for bots, I have only seen one my entire time playing. Just some guy waiting for an ore node to respawn. That was it. I have had no issues with ANY of the dungeons being camped. Not once. In fact, when there are people there I am sometimes thankful as it makes my life much easier.

I am a loner in most games, but in this game I have already made a few friends just due to the nature of the game. While the quests are solo orientated like Skyrim and the games before, there is plenty to bring people together.

I am actually enjoying the crafting which is something I haven't been able to say for over 10 years. I am also enjoying the exploring, random dungeons I find, and all the hidden treasures. Sometimes I just wander around looking for neat things. Some of the neat things you find don't really do anything for you, but its interesting that they were made. For instance, I found a grave site with a sad dog guarding the one grave. Nothing to do there, nothing to interact with, but it was cool none the less.

    I hope this helps!

Some players encounter no issues while others encounter the extremes.  Personally, the worst I've encountered in the last week or so is needing to relog every 20-30 quests because I didn't phase correctly and an NPC is invisible.  Also, I got my feet stuck in a box in a dungeon and my character couldn't move until I did /stuck which made me die and I had to clear all the trash to get back to where I died.

Like all mmos there is a certain about of luck involved.  Look at the battle.net forums.  There are still people with bug and account issues in Wow daily and that game is 10 years old.  Some people are just unlucky(or have garbage computers that are riddled with malware).

Do you really want to pay/month for a game that is not even mmo?

If that's your choice go ahead and do it.

It has it's share of bugs / issues like pretty much every MMO has had, but things are being sorted out and theyve been doing maintenance / updates a couple times a week to try and get things fixed. There is also a new patch coming which will sort out several of the existing issues as well as (hopefully) cut down on the bots.

As far as the game itself, if you're expecting Oblivion or Skyrim online, it isn't that. It isn't as open as those games and follows more of a themepark level based design instead of content that scales to you like the single player games, while at the same time offering some nice exploration opportunities as well. It also uses a soft targeting system with reticule, rather than the more fps/tps style that the single player games use. Basically just aim somewhere around a target and it will hit it, rather than having to actually land precise shots.

I think it does a fine job though of mixing portions of TES with what's expected from an MMO. Like I said, it isnt Skyrim + multiplayer, but it takes a lot of the lore, style, and quite a few of the features you would expect from TES games and replaces some things with mechanics better suited to an MMO.

Best way to think of it is if TES and GW2 had a baby. It's some parts GW2 stuff (similar skill setup though with MUCH more customization since any class an use any weapon & armor at any time as well as select their own skills, similar PvP style, etc) but with a TES look & feel to it. It also offers more vertical progression than GW2, though not as much as a gear based / raid progression game like WoW.

Imo dont. Wait a bit, at least until May patch arrives and then decide. No need to rush anyway.

Do not ask this question in this site. I mean it. You wont get a "non-biased" answer. For example, i was expecting too much from the game and it let me down so hard, i just hate it now. So my opinion will not be honest. Then, there is the usual rabid fanboy team, according to them there is no problem ever in the game. Ever. So, their opinion will not be honest too. (Cant resist it: i laughed hard to the post saying there are no bots in the game because he hasnt seen any. Well, maybe if you play with your eyes shut, yes..) For some reason, ESO fits the "you love it or you hate it" class perfectly.

Wait for a trial type thingy. Videos / streams are not enough to make a decision. Game costs a lot of money (at least for me) so dont waste it. That is the honest opinion of them all: Wait for the trial, decide yourself.

Stages of a new mmo: 1) It's just beta. It still has plenty of time before release. 2) It just launched. Give it time. WoW wasn't built in a day. 3) We don't need you anyway. 4) F2P announced. 5)Huge influx of players. 6) Look how much has changed. 7) Cash shop is the only thing developed lately. 8) It has been a long journey and we thank everyone who was part of it. Shutting down in 3 months. (Courtesy of Robokapp.)

I only played in 4 beta weekends, so I have no experience with Live outside of live streams. In my opinion, the game is not worth the tag. It doesn't offer much outside of what you can get elsewhere for cheaper. In my opinion, Neverwinter has better combat by far, but a dead endgame. GW2 PVP is very similar and is buy to play. Questing in SWTOR and FFXIV is much more fun in every aspect.

Again this is all my opinion, but it is my honest opinion.

The thing is, everyone is giving "an honest opinion". Good and Bad.

    Your mileage may vary.

There are some quests bugs and they are usually fixed with logging out and logging back in again. A pain but there it is. I had more of these issues in beta and launch day. Less so now.

This is not Morrowind/Skyrim/Oblvion online but is an mmo that is framed around the Elder Scrolls.

Personally the way the quests unfold in this game, mostly after about level 15, are the best I've experienced for mmo quests.

I have not had the bank inventory bug or any major bug. Not saying they are not there but I haven't had it.

Quite frankly, just buy the game and try it. Your not going to lose much and as long as you don't expect Morrowind/Skyrim/Oblvion online you'll be fine.

    Been playing since early access.

There are some bugs you run into, I have had a couple though nothing major.

There is a lot of spam in low level zones from gold sellers.

There are a bunch of gathering bots farming bosses in the public dungeons that are quite annoying, but the devs claim to be working on a fix.

    Overall, I enjoy the game.

been playing since 5 day head start. never played skyrim so im new to the series. this game has grabbed me and now im addicted. i wasnt a fan in beta and was not gonna preorder but my wife talked me into it. im glad she did. im only level 24 but ive played over 70 hours. there is so much to do besides questing and lvl'ing. im taking my time and just enjoying the game. has more to offer than most games out there. this game starts at lvl 1 as opposed to most games starting at max lvl. i feel this game is worth the sub fee but im not one of those players that feel every game should b f2p. i hate f2p. games r always to shallow. i highly recommend this game to anyone who isnt a free loading f2p crybaby.

I have had zero progression stopping bugs or problems. Lag has not been an issue for me, had to use /reloadui twice since the 5 day early access started. I have found two quest that were bugged and wouldn't progress, one has been fixed, the other I cant remember what it was because I deleted it and moved on (just some random side quest)

Never seen a bot, there are some gold spammers from time to time, but not to the extent that it interferes with the zone chat.

Overall, I absolutely love the game.

Some reference about me so you can put my opinion in perspective:

The Witcher 2 / Skyrim are tied for me as my favorite single player rpgs ever.

    - With Ultima 7 as a really really really close second.

DAoC is my favorite MMORPG of all time with AoC coming in a distant second.

    - Also really liked EQ2, SWTOR, SWG, AC1

    Hope that helps.

yea, but if you have a real PC and prefer games with an actual engine. dont. play skyrim or ESO. both solid good games (one single player one mmo)

    * there are NOT lots of quest bugs, out of several hundred quests i did 3 or 4 have been bugged so far

    * spammers and bots? if you can't handle em, dont play mmos.

ESO had one of the smoothest (if not the best) starts of any mmo i saw so far, and i am playing since about 2k4)

the main thing i have with ESO is: i wonder why no one else did such an mmo before ^^

it seems to be possible, why did it take em so long!

I find your question a bit amusing. No offence but how are you going to determine what is an honest review without having played the game yourself? Opinions and tastes differ so all opinions are "honest". Just saying. Best way to know if you will like a game is to: 1) play it yourself 2) do a bit of research on your own looking at game play videos and such.

    Just saying...

A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...

LOL, I guess all the people in the official forums are lying then?

The support forum has almost 8K topics and about 100 thousand replies to those comments. But no the issues are in a very small minority. If the sales numbers are even close to accurate I would say 15-20% of the player population has encountered some MAJOR bug.

The reason why you claim to not hear it in game chat is because those people cant log in have never or were banned for some stupid reason thus they cant even play the game.

As to the question. I would put it this way. if you expect something substantial from a game I would pass. If you can live with problems I would wait a few months when the price is at least reduced considerably if not completely free to play.

Because right now youre in a no mans land spot. Your going to be buying into a game when its in a transition and it still has a lot of major problems. Once May 5 hits I suspect the game to be a ghost town, especially in the lower level areas. Other than bots and gold spammers that is.

But really if you havent bought it yet and have to ask the question then I suspect youre going to need more at his point than the game can reasonably offer.

ESO is a very good game with very good stories and great graphics. It has a very innovative character progression system, the combat is fun and the pvp is jaw dropping huge in scale and very addictive.  It has a really engaging style to it and overall it has been fun.

BUT... It does also have some challenges that it has to work though. There are some spectacular bugs right now. I have lost 20 slots of bank expansions and they are still working on getting it patched. I also lost items because of it and I am really doubting I will get them back. I have heard of others having bugged quests though there are much fewer than was in beta. We all expect some bugs but these are pretty big, pretty impactful bugs and I fear this game will go the way of Warhammer if they don't get things under control fast. Warhammer was a great game. It was super  fun but it was also very buggy and incomplete at release. Vanguard was also a great game with great ideas. incredible innovations and really impressive art for the time. It was also crippled by bugs at launch and felt rushed to market. Where are both of these games today.

ESO has to avoid this bullet because it kills and kills consistently. ESO really has the potential to do very very well. Much better than I though it would several months ago. But a new game now days has to nail its customer base in the first month. You don't get a second try at your first month.

    All die, so die well.

sorry, but i see only flame here.

there is a simple rule: if you can't handle mmo starts, dont play em.

major bugs and they can't log in? seriously, be more dramatic.

being one of those "few" people that CAN play let me rephrase it for you: THERE ARE NO MAJOR BUGS.

concerning bots: i saw 3 yesterday, they were camping a rather less killed public dungeon boss. but hey, if you know how to bug those bosses, those bots just stand there *G*

as general hint to the OPs: if someone claims ESO will go f2p soon, don't bother bout him or his comments. trolls gonna troll.

and no, the "official forums" are not "lying", they are a bunch of whiney kids raging at every useless shit. plain and simple.

and seriously, if me preposter thinks this game has nothing substential, i wonder what he conciders substential. most likely a 40 men raid with heavy item grind ^^

Save your money man unless your extremely bored. But after 2 months, you probably won't be playing it.
  • DilligDillig Member UncommonPosts: 123

I have seen 4 bugged quest so far from day one myself , 2 have since been fixed and the other 2 I finished by relogging to another instance. A few bugged boss mobs.

I am in a guild with about 400 or so people and have heard a few people saying they are having a few bugged quests here and there and a few having login issues.

There are alot of post on the forums asking for help but 100000 people it is not. Alot of post are people posting over and over I would say the people who are having major problems are more like 25k. Are there more then 25k people with issues yes but I bet most are minor.

That all said the choice to buy or not is yours no one can decide for you and everyone has a different opinion of the game some good some bad. It was worth the money I paid for so far and have subbed.

Are there bugs that wipe inventories, remove bank slots, halt progression, and get you stuck; or is it more along the lines of launch problems that most MMO's have?

It depends on what you mean by 'worth'.

If you are talking value in terms of a bug-free experience, I'd suggest waiting for ZOS to iron out these issues before you make the jump. You don't stand to lose anything; On the contrary, you are only getting a better experience if you wait.

If you are talking about relative value compared to the TES series, I'd say ESO is not worth it imo. But it depends on how much you can play. For example, I'm approaching 1000 hours spent on Skyrim if not more. All that for $60. I can only afford 60-100 hours of gaming time per month. So for that same amount of playtime, ESO would cost me $60 + ($15 x 9) = $195. If you can devote more hours to gaming, then you'll make your money count more.

On a side note, have you tried the betas? You mentioned being a Oblivion/Skyrim fan. Depending on how you played TES series, you may / may not enjoy ESO as much.

*Note: My opinions are based on my experiences in the betas only.
