I don't think this was a poke at SWTOR at all, I just thought they felt it would be funny. Oddly though, a lot of people (myself included) actually would like a system like this implemented. Final Fantasy games always had a romantic/tragedy element to them and it would fit this game very well.
In FF7 you had Cloud/Tifa/Aeris triangle with Yuffie thrown in at the Golden Saucer for good measure.
In FF8 you had Rinoa and the repressed feelings of Quistis
In FF9 you had 'Dagger' or Garnet as she's called.
FF10 saw a long romance themed game with Yuna
and so on and so on.
I think its nice that the character you play and the people you play have other motivations other than 'saving the world until they die'. It's nice to have a higher calling, but don't let my character be 'forever alone'.

I thought the companion system was pretty cool. A bit too much for my taste in an mmorpg setting, but still it was a fun side feature.
