There are some faster than others...hard to judge reliability as they tend to get abused (in pockets. through washing machines, etc)... however, for the most part they are a disposable commodity item and the biggest difference in them is whatever plastic they use for the casing, and in extreme cases for sensitive data, if they support encryption/security features (which you will pay for heavily). We go through them by the case at work in various sizes, up to 64GB.
Get whatever is cheapest, keep the data backed up on it, and keep a backup handy. If you are really worried about it - you can get a brand name with a warranty, however, if it craps out your data is still gone, you just get a new flash drive to replace it, and it's not uncommon that the price delta doesn't make that warranty very attractive.
