Returning to STO

dzonesdzones Member UncommonPosts: 121

I have not played since the first launch and have been hearing a lot of good things about the changes and introduction of the Klingons and Romulans as playable races so thought I would give it another go.

I am just going to start over since I have forgotten it all anyway but have a few questions.

Is the Klingon race fun and pretty much an equivalent to Starfleet as far as overall gameplay? I mean is it comparable to Horde vs Alliance?

Is it auto PVP if I encounter a starfleet vessel in space or how does that work?

Is there much or what is the benefit to subbing?

Thanks in advance

Anything else ya wanna throw in for a returning noob would be great as well.

klingons are still a Little thin on content, starfleet have more

i suggest, that you try romulans, they have a completely new storyline, or rather most of one

PVP is all instanced, there is no OWPVP

subbing gives you some dillthium every month, and a XP boost

STO is very versatile, with difficulty setting, and you can play the ground battles as a FPS

    have fun

Pretty much what simplius wrote, just adding a few thoughts.

Now, after LoR, you can pick a klingon captain right from the start, and not starting as a lvl20 one like earlier. Content-wise it's indeed a bit weaker than Starfleet, but with LoR they've closed the gap significantly, so I'd say it's almost an equal counterpart. And they have unique DOff assignments. I mean, execute for incompetence? Hell, yeah! You can do it only on a Klingon vessel, puny starfleets just sending them for a shore leave or for some counselling :)

For subbing, maybe I'm wrong but I always say that in STO's model sub is not worth it. If you like the game, plan to play it for a longer time and you're willing to pay, then lifer is a much better deal. If not, free play with occasional Zen purchases is much better than the monthly sub.

(and even lifer is only an option because of the veteran rewards, otherwise I'd say free play, hands down. STO has a pretty allowing and freep-friendly f2p model.)

yup, i only payed the subs, because of conscience, not because i needed them

STO is prolly the most F2P friendly game on the market

you only have to spend Money, if you want something special

the rest of the game is really FREE

Is the Klingon race fun and pretty much an equivalent to Starfleet as far as overall gameplay? I mean is it comparable to Horde vs Alliance? Most of the conent for klingons is the same as that for feds(and roms) and can seem a bit odd on occasion(going into the federation most secure prison even though the 2 factions are meant to be at war etc), what little actual content they have to themselves is poorly made and quite buggy.  Kilnks also haven't gotten any decent ships in the c-store yet imo, just a couple of cruisers, still waiting for an escort or raider to be added(a decent bird of prey would be nice)

Is it auto PVP if I encounter a starfleet vessel in space or how does that work?  Instanced arena type pvp(5v5).  How it works-join the que, wait 15mins then die as you won't be able to dent enemy shields and get killed in one hit.

Is there much or what is the benefit to subbing?  Lifetimers get the borg playable race with their bonuses.  There are also vet awards that can give a decent boost if you pay long enough.  Other than that there are the free skill resets and you get to create with the foundry(f2pers can' create here).  No real benefit unless you want to win at pvp.

    Thanks in advance

Anything else ya wanna throw in for a returning noob would be great as well.  Personally would hold off paying for a month or two to see what you think of the game after you're done with the 'content' and onto the gear grind(very large and repetative).  Also there should be a free tier 5 ship with the anniversary event in a couple of months or you can grind dilithium for the exchange rather than pay real money.

You could be better of rolling a romulan and joining the klingons with that(at lvl10), I would say they have been given more(content and ships) than the klingons have.

    Karahandras, great one :)

I don't pvp, but in the games I like I used to dabble with that part as well, and I agree, in STO, if you queue up for a space one, the result will be most likely "join the que, wait 15mins then die as you won't be able to dent enemy shields and get killed in one hit." But the ground ones are pretty cool, especially with the shooter-mode.

And with one of my captains, during leveling I've played a lot in Ker'rat, it's the closest one to what OP ment with the pvp question. Open area, PvPvE, both sides can enter any time. There's the Borg, and a map objective to eliminate them. If Fleet and Klinks working together, it's not a tough job. On the other hand, if they start to shoot each other, with the Borg in the background, that's a whole different story :)

As for the free VA ship at the anniversary, I'm not sure. They did it 2 years ago (with the Odyssey / BortaS), but I guess they've noticed it was too generous, so last year they only gave rank4 ships (Ent-C and the retrofit version, for Klingons I don't remember, never used it), same with the winter event and with Risa, only a rank4 ship - though the Corvette is awesome.

I'm not saying to skip the Anniversary (a few weeks from now), just don't be disappointed if you "only" get a rank4 for free. Which are still great ships.
