Also compared to this list SWTOR is the messiah of online gaming.  I mean really, we get it.  You were disappointed with SWTOR, or it wasn't the game you wanted it to be, but to claim that it comes anywhere near the epic badness of the games listed in this column is laughable and complete trolling.

I had no idea DUST514 was that bad...that's disappointing

So..... this is the worst of the worst list? Not much, if any, that came out in 2013 was very good.

I played Wizardry in beta and shortly at launch, but it quickly went downhill. I was looking forward to City of Steam but they ran into issues then recently relaunched I believe. I will have to check that one out, because I was surprised it made a worst list.

Swtor, given the budget behind it, the IP, to me it should hv been in the list ...

    RIP Orc Choppa

Just because people have not heard of most of these MMO's doesn't mean they should be on this list.

Neverwinter Online Should be on there one of the worst MMO's I played last year

    Fine.

By the same token, Neverwinter was not included on that list and that was also a major advertiser here.

And that game SUCKED, especially because it is now "The D&D" MMO for the foreseeable future.

No mention of the of the Rampant cheating in NW, the currency dupes, the exploits and huge combat imbalances, the promised features that never appeared, the shallow, shallow gameplay, the P2W cash shop, the terrible Cryptic CS, the fact that ALMOST everyone stopped playing that game after a month or two?

None of that puts NW ahead (or behind) of some of those other games that no one has ever heard of and not 5% of the number of people NW had, played?

All of that is plenty objective, as noted by the dozens to hundreds of threads on those very topics here, and yet, NW is somehow immune from criticism?

I can only think of one reason why that might be.....

When it launched, there was a whole lot of promise in the integration with EVE Online. There was a lot of hope built up behind it (which I mention briefly in the beginning of the article) which made its long-term mediocrity all the more glaring. Reviewed today, I have no doubt our score would be lower. How much, I can't say, but the crushing disappointment in how its systems shook out definitely makes it one of the worst games of the year.

Doesnt this just highlight a bigger issue. When "media" does a review, shouldnt it only be on whats actually in the game. Not the promise of future content, or the possibility of living up to any potential. If a game company wanted that content to be included in any score of a review, they should have delayed the game until it was completed.

When a game launches with broken or missing content, thats thier decision. Its not up to a reviewer to imagine what said promises would be like, its thier job to deliver an accurate account on whats actually present. If said promises are delivered later, then adjust the score up, dont score a game higher then be disappointed when promises arent kept or potential isnt realized.

Gotta love the folks who made The War Z.  Youtube Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing.  These are pretty much the same folks who made the crap fest known as The War Z.  Stupid Russians.

It might have worked better had they decided to put it on PC instead of console.

the problem is not that is on console. The problem is that it is not on PC. A PC release would  help the game still now. And hell, i would love CCP forever if they allow combat in third person. Their third person lobby interaction (walking around in the lobby) has amazing animations and polish, too bad the rest of the game doesnt.

I believe Ragnarok Online 2 dissapointed a lot.

War Z was a piece of crap and devs are scumbags but they changed the name because they were getting sued over it not to trick anyone.

The only game on the list I disagree with is Scarlet Blade.  Especially at the number 3 slot.  It's only there because boobs.  I don't play the game or anything but there were a lot worse.

Also Dust was never promised to be an MMO, only to have connections through gameplay to an existing one, and definitely is a lobby shooter at its core so while the game is crap I don't understand why it's on the list.

The platform has/had nothing to do with it.  If you play the game it just feels like a terrible shooter.  Basically like the folks who made Eve made an FPS which is a genre they have absolutely no experience with so it just does not feel right or play well at all.  Definitely borderline P2W and the integration with Eve online is minimal and unimpressive at best.  You could throw it on PC and it would still be a mediocre game with the same glaring flaws.

Sure, other than the fact there already was, and continues to be, another D&D MMO. What was the name of that one again... it was a tricky name.... hmmm..... oh right D&D online. So what exactly makes you consider Neverwinter as "The D&D" MMO?

City of Steam would be the game I picked as having the biggest gap between what it could have been and what it turned out to be.  They got a small, browser based game to look and perform really well.  They used an original and interesting IP.  Then they used the most banal and repetitive game play they could and none of the stuff they did right mattered at all.

Many of the other games I've never heard of, and the rest just didn't look interesting, so it's hard to be disappointed in them.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Yeah I'd have to leave Neverwinter off the Worst of the Year list too.  I mean it's not my cup of tea but the Foundry alone is a unique feature in its own right.  While the game may be lacking some in the MMO department and some features hardcore D+D fans might have wanted it does provide the feel of dungeon crawling that some other gamesi n the genre lack.

Neverwinter is an awesome game for what it is.  People expected a high budget Triple-A MMO but it is a niche game developed for a specific type of gamer and was never meant to be a game for everyone.

If you enjoy visceral and fast paced action combat while running dungeons with minimal story and progression then NWO is a great game.  I get why the common MMO'er doesn't like it but it doesn't take away from what it does for those like me who want something like that.

But then again I guess the staff here gets it which is why it isn't on the list.  For that I thank them for this.  IMO the only list NWO deserves to be on is best MMO for 2013 because its amazing for people who like that sort of stuff and its only getting better.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

What's funny is that all your complaints about Neverwinter don't actually make it a bad game.  There were problems that caused issues with the economy and pvp that the game is not even close to being made for (D&D is themepark central) despite its inclusion.  The game functioned, provided a dungeon crawling experience, has the foundry, etc.  Now if this was list of Worst MMO Companies of 2013 or Biggest Blunders of MMO's in 2013, etc. I'd be in total agreement with you, but it's not.

Yeah, because all of the game's many problems would just magically disappear if it were on PC.

Its a bad game, it would still be bad on PC.

I totally disagree, Neverwinter is one of the best f2p game, next to Path of Exile, it's neither p2w or "crappy", IMO at least.

I agree with most of the list, Scarlet Blade isn't that bad, it has great sci-fi concept and it really isn't porn, more like eroticism.

Wings of Destiny, yeah... I just hate auto-pathing!

I'm sorry to say that I have to agree with City of Steam being placed on the 10 worst games list.

Since taking control of the game, seems that they have made one mist step after another, from  using the China version of the game for the US to each patch taking away free items and replacing them with real cash pay to win items.  Right now it looks like all they want is your money.

I feel that if they had just used the alpha beta version of the game and have built on improving the game with a small monthly fee to play it.  The game could have been one of the best games for 2013.

  • sunshadow21sunshadow21 Member UncommonPosts: 357

Of the ones I am at least vaguely familiar with:

City of Steam still has potential if they can bring more of the original concept into the actual gameplay.

Dust 514 I wouldn't write off either for all that it didn't get off to a flying start; the whole integration with EVE was never going to be easy or be accomplished overnight, and the pain it inflicts on new players isn't that much different than what EVE does, so that really shouldn't be that much of a surprise. It will do well enough as CCP slowly refines it over the next decade. It will never be a big title amongst other shooters, but then I don't think it was ever really intended to be; it was made to enrich EVE, and as time goes on, I have no doubt that the integration will come, albeit at a pace that is likely to drive it's fans crazy.

Scarlet Blade I never saw enough news on the actual gameplay to say exactly how the game itself really fits onto the list; the adverstising was bad, but I didn't see anything to suggest that the game itself was notably worse than anything else out there. Even the over the top boobs aren't that unusual amongst a lot of f2p games; it's just that they highlighted them more than most games that have them do.

From what this says about "Ragnarok Online 2" I want to play it now. I like the looks of it and if it's close to WoW as it says here, then it should be good. So not sure why it's on this list. Is it really that bad of a game?
