need way way smaller music format

i just got a new ipaq its nice but its a pain in the ass in some ways.
but ive been trying to put music on it and normal windows media player file format is way way way too big when a gig of memory for music costs 50 or 60 bucks.
what program should i use to compact my music files.....
i have never messed with music file formats before but now i really really need them at 1/10 their size.

.mp3 is the best (best as in very small compered to others) well known compression for audio files out ther so any program that can change .wav or whatever you have into .mp3 is good.
WMAs are smaller and the sound quality is only poorer at extreme volumes.

Actually, I have some .wav files and they are SMALLER that .mp3... Don't know if its just some crazy stuff that shoudln't be happening, but thats what I am looking at right now...
Anyway, concerning to the topic... I don't know, sry, try google?
