Is there anyway to reduce lag? As soon as i left the noobie starbase and starting jumping out to other space stations the lag become unbearable? Am i just unlucky or is this typical?

As a new started you are probably in one of the busier systems- if you jump out a couple of systems it should improve. Try and find an agent after your initial startup agent, that isn't in a busy system
Lately, the client has been causing a large amount of lag if XFire is also running on the computer. If you are running XFire, close it down and you're lag should improve.
As mentioned too, move out of the busier systems before you get too settled in. Just a few jumps out should be fine, and the area will have the same things to offer as the crowded hub systems, minus the lag.
