3rd person perspective a mistake?

I think Eternal Crusade has lots of potential to be a great game, but why 3rd person??

First person gives much better immersion... but also, if it's in 3rd person then using the Rift and Omni combo will suck - why bother?

If people have the coming VR setup, they will want to play 1st person games and Behaviour Interactive may be shooting themselves in their big orky feet.

There are few advantages to 3rd person views, I guess with the WH40K IP it's about seeing your character from the outside, seeing kill moves etc, but it will be condemned to the mouse and keyboard.

I love the IP, but when my Omni and Rift arrive, why bother wasting time with 3rd person games?

The percentage of people who own VR devices is negligible at the moment. It would make no sense for them to make a big decision like this based on it.

Why 3rd person and not 1st?

Simple: there is an oversaturation of 1st person shooters, and pretty much every time someone makes a 1st person shooter game based on an IP that based around a game that originally is a strategy game, pretty much everyone says, "You maniacs, you blew it up!" (see Angry Joe's reaction to the original reaction to the announcement that XCOM was going to be a 1st person shooter).

Plus if its 1st person shooter, how will you be able to play the game and see your sweet loot?  How will you be able to see your character progressing from a new marine recruit to a captain, or how orky your 'nob looks?  Sure the option should be there to play from a 1st person perspective as with the Elder Scroll series, including ESO, if one wants, but restricting it to a 1st person perspective is going to get way too many "I wanted to play Warhammer 40, not Battlefield 4/Planetside2/Team Fortress 2/insert name of other modern fps here" reactions.

Plus if you haven't played Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, go play it and see why the 3rd person perspective works better for 40K than the 1st person perspective.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

why not go for the best of both namely make it possible to switch btwn 1st and 3rd person view on th fly?

in that way those tht want 1st person can have tht n those who wants 3rd person can have tht and b able to switch dependin on the situation theyr in

Like others said, because of melee combat. It's easier to do close quarters action combat in 3rd person view where you see how your character is moving.

1st person melee has been done well in a few games, but they're fairly rare.

Personally I prefer 3rd person for a game like this. I want to see my ork in all his glory as he swings his chainaxe down on some spacemarine

You can use the rift for a 3rd person game just fine as long as it's been developed with VR in mind.  You would still have the advantage of a large field of view and being in the environment, only your pov is slightly above and behind your character, kind of like being an angel on your avatar's shoulders.

Not saying they (Behavior Interactive) will be able to port their game for the rift, but VR isn't limited to the first person view.

As other people have said, it's a design preference.

    • Players can see their gear.
    • Players can see the things their character is doing.
    • Players can pan the camera around, adding an element to the game play.

Beyond that, I would assume that they've determined that a lot of the players they are likely to attract prefer third person to first person. They aren't making an online version of Skyrim after all. :-)

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

    You kidding me ?

We don't want FP crap in RPG games ! Go away ….

Third person is the only way to enjoy a RPG.

Because if this game will be anything like the tabletop game, you're going to have a lot going on all around you, and you're going to need to be able to see as much of the battlefield as possible.  Add in vehicles, fast attack units, jump packs...and your reflexes and snap decision making is going to have to be on point. I agree that you should have the option of first person controls/view if you'd like them, but not having it as the only option.

Because Oculus or not, third person is still preferred in MMOs.

I love how so many people say that 1st person increases immersion.  Then no one actually wants to play the game.  What was the last 1st person MMO that was successful?  From what I can remember, that would be EQ.  It was popular more due to lack of competition and being the first mainstream 3d MMO.

And seriously... how many people actually have the oculus rift?  Like.. four people?

I prefer all my mmos and rpgs in 3rd person I want to see the progression. I truly loather FPS.

I say since the Dawn of War series is probably the most successful Warhammer video Game in History that it should be neither 1st or 3rd person but top down view!!!

But seriously who cares as long as it's good.

Because Omni and Rift are not going to be viable probably for another 3-5 years at earliest.  Then it probably will only be viable if and when...the consoles get in on them.

Sorry but until something has the full functionality of a realism and I'm talking about making it feel like your in a game, not oh look I only see the game world.  How about my abilities, I still have to use something in my hands and how about keyboard functionality and not seeing any keys?

How many adults play games again?  Nearly everyone and many of us have kids/wife, how do you think it goes through if you cut yourself off inside a VR screen/headset that most likely is noise cancelling.

Though,  I guess it'll be good for the porn industry though, VR porn in your eyes.

Take a look at the 40k Universe... it's races...the units.. It's a totally visually pleasing and gory environment. To me 3rd person is the only way for this game,  First person would totally ruin the immersion,  offering both options would just not feel right.

it's a warzone, I want too see my awesome armor, the  chain sword slicing into an orks head,my eldar rapidly slicing it's blades at the nearest foe acrobatically rolling around , explosions going off behind me as I sprint across the field, the jetpack exhaust and flames going off, you can't get that immersion in first person.

It's all visual. 3rd person is the right choice.

    Thanks devs : 3!

Third person should always be an option in an RPG game. I don't even play turn based first person combat RPG's.

I don't hate mortal online for that tho since i think FPS only for MO fits well, but that's only for MO. MO's problem is bends more towards bugs and combat needs lot of work.

Depends which options go with it. This appears to be a hybrid shooter, so pov is critical for this type of game.

Yea because obviously companies are bracing as much for Occulous as they are 4K TV's, Google Glass and NEST products. Besides the fact everyone has already jumped on this point, gamepads/controllers are already effective in mmo's and are pretty much natural to any FPS~player.

Allowing for gamepad/controller functionality is the best way to make everyone happy I feel. Other easy solution is to just simply allow for 1st/3rd person swapping view. That's been a pretty standard feature in mmo's as well and if you included the gamepad controller along with swappable views no one's gonna gripe about it.

You know what was actually really good was Unreal Tournament: Liandri Conflict.  Because it blended 3rd person melee and first person shooting so well.

Really, the biggest problem with first person is the game seems to be based around some cover mechanics and so  you would have to be ready to go in and out of first person into third and vice versa.  I'd have to actually try it before I approved but, Battlefront 2 is another game that did 3rd and 1st well.  I always did 3rd cause that was standard on BF2 on Xbox, how ever on Liandri, the same system, going between them felt really fluid and nice.  I cannot p i m p Liandri enough for how well that was done and how relevant it is to this topic.

    WHY NOT BOTH?

I dont even see why the argument has to revolved around one or the other. Support both playstyles - and support VR while youre at it.

Personally I always find the wide FOV 1st person perspective the most immersive, by a wide margin. 3d person always makes me feel outside of my character, like i'm playing someone who is moving a toy around. In 1st person it's ME who is moving rather than me moving a figurine. And besides, I can stand only so much of looking at the butt of my space marine rhytmically swinging, and swinging and swinging.... No matter how good my character looks at one point I get sick to the death of staring at his back for hours on end.

Adittionally, I could never get the hang of shooter games, those requiring actual aiming, in 3rd person. I find everything completely off. 3rd person is ok with targetting or close combat where you basically just flail around in the general direction of the enemies, but aiming... no, just no. I tried out this scheme in Firefall and.. it simply didn't feel right for me. This might pass for consoles with their atrocious aiming controls, but mouse and keyboard.. no. Imo they'll have to implement some kind of soft-aiming to compensate and it's just going to hurt the game's appeal with all the cries of dumbing-down etc etc.

It really all depends on the combat system. If it's more aiming FPS-like then 1st person is the only way to go. If it's going to be more targetting, skills affair then I guess 3rd person is better. I'd prefer a more visceral, fps-like experience tbh but then again WH are basically miniatures games so it's a question wether you want to present a computer version of a WH GAME or WH WORLD?

The game looks really interesting though and I used to be a huge fan of WH universe. This might be just a gripe of mine but I would prefer 1st person with option to zoom out when need arises.

It's spiritual predecessors were [to be] third person shooters, stillborn or otherwise. Half of 40k is seeing cool figures., so not being able to see your own "Mini' would be a huge bummer. I do agree that there should be an option to play in first-person for those who want it, but it should be just as playable as third-person and not an afterthought feature.

Personally,I can't imagine first perspective as assault/raptor.To be simply efficient,at least those classes must be tps.

    I think 3rd person is a mistake.

Oculus Rift will be introduced towards the end of this year, it's 100% certain to be a sell-out. Suddenly, 1st person games will be all the rage and nobody will bother with 3rd person any more (unless it's a strategy game).
