While not exactly an MMO, Disney has announced that a game called "Star Wars Attack Squadrons" is in development. The free to play multiplayer game will feature iconic series ships in heated 16v16 aerial battles.

Get ready to pilot -- and make some special modifications to -- some of the most famous starships in the galaxy. Disney Interactive announced today the first details for the upcoming online game Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, and has invited fans to sign up for a chance to join the action during beta tests in the new year.

The new title is a free-to-play, open web, space combat game offering an intense multiplayer battle experience where players can customize and tune popular Star Wars ships, including the Rebel Alliance's X-wing fighter or the Empire's TIE Interceptor. In Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, players will enter exciting dogfighting action with up to 16 players at a time as they maneuver through iconic Star Wars locations. Future ships, environments, and game details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Star Wars fans can sign up now for a chance to participate in the closed beta at www.starwars.com/attacksquadrons with the first play session beginning early 2014.

Star Wars: Attack Squadrons was developed by Area 52 in conjunction with Disney Interactive and LucasArts.

Check out the trailer below, and stay tuned to StarWars.com for more on Star Wars: Attack Squadrons!

Probably to get around having to involve EA in any part of it.  Maybe when they did that 10 year Star Wars deal, Disney left themselves the option to make their own games as well.

Be interesting to know how much wiggle room is in that agreement. Maybe those who will never play SWTOR again might have a new hope.

I guess thats why SWTOR's Galactic Starfighter was implemented..

Some may cling to the idea that EA was listening to fans, but it would seem EA didn't want their game to be one-upped by some "other" SW game.

16vs16 does seem very limiting in SW:AS, unless you are playing on dialup.  I guess the space-battlefield is small /shrug

Hopefully its epic when it comes out.

Hope in Disney? Try again my friend. People begged for updates and even started a petition for Pirates of the Caribbean Online, asking Disney to actually update the game or do something with it and they just completely ignored their players.

Also, when I see space games that don't have even a quarter of the cash to work with that Disney has, and they somehow manage to have way better graphics than this, why in the world would I want to play this? Just because it has the name "Star Wars" on it?

Out of all the options of what they could have developed, this is not bad. but it seems they are going for vehicle pvp, with a tier system for customisation.

Im thinking they can put swoop racing as well. I would be very interested in playing that. Too bad we can't have this in swtor currently, with other mini games.

Im guessing the space combat here will also be more twicth based than swtor. Im just not sure what browser based means, or does that mean its an old engjne with simple systems that run on a browser...so its even more open to a large audience than old graphics/cartoon that lasts appeal for that design decision. So, bad graphics? Not sure, but i would not be a fan of pixelated art.

Call me when they actually make a proper single player game in the TIE Fighter / X-Wing series. Until then, no thanks.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Is following the WoT / War thunder Model, is not that bad if you thing about how many players and money those game are making, But this is pretty much a rogue squadron PvP version, im good with that.

    They are so vague.

Is this a First-Person Joystick / Keyboard / Cockpit Shooter?

If not, they really need to change their "Dog Fighting" claim to "Cat Fighting".

If this is FPS, it will be a blast.

This sounds like fun.  I enjoyed Freelancer with fewer than 32 people on a server, so 16v16 would be big enough.  It would be even more fun if they add AI ships on top of the 16v16 to make it feel like an epic battle.

What I would really like to see is an updated multiplayer Battlefront.  Players got to be the "hero" in very large-scale fights, both in space and on the ground.  Playing a jedi and slicing through hordes of stormtroopers was fun.

I thought the ea/disney deal was for single player games and not online ones.  Or have I been misinformed?

By the way this is not 16v16. It's 8v8 so 16 total.
