Please help, I can't justify it

I'm running out of options to play, so I played LOTRO up to level 20 and I enjoyed it. The world is beautiful, good story and the games seems deep. I'm not crazy about a free to play game but what isn't anymore.

Last night I was trying to justify playing LOTRO or Neverwinter, I watched many youtubes of Neverwinter and it's too liner and hand holding, so that game is out.

My problem with Lotro is that I would like to play a Rune-Keeper. I understand that I would have to buy the first expansion to play it.  No big deal.  BUT the game seems too easy.  At first I thought it was just the tutorial area, But level 20 ?  I think it's getting even easer.  All my skills and abilities seem to be worthless.  Infact I'm not even sure what attacks I'm spamming anymore because it doesn't seem to matter.  If the game is like this, what does it matter what class you play.  Is it broke ?  will they fix it ?

It is a bit easier in the beginning, yes, I would guess to help the levelling experience. Haven't played in a while though. Have to admit, I found it a bit boring with the long distances that have to be travelled in some areas. But that might just be me.

Try playing a bit more in groups, if you can find any. Could also help better to define your role and how easy/difficult it is. If you play as a Warden, you also "spam", it's just different combos you have to remember to be more effective, and that is what makes that class more advanced (though you get help with the combos).

And as always - are you in a guild, who can help you with this question?

Actually there's a thread here about the easy-mode after HD :) (and numerous ones on the official forum too)

So yep, it's not only you, the game is over-easy now. Is it broke ?  will they fix it ? Nobody knows for sure. Some say there will be a nerf / fix in the near future, but maybe they're just hoping for it.

You don't have to buy Moria for the rune-keeper, you can buy the class separately as well - just noting the fact, because that would be the worst advice anyone can give... If you plan to stick in LotRO for a bit longer, it's a much better deal to buy Moria, you will need the area anyways. (and rune-keeper, warden, +2 character slots and some starter items are bundled within the box)

I agree on The world is beautiful, good story and the games seems deep. part just as in Neverwinter's case the too linear and hand holding, it indeed is. On a slight defense of Neverwinter, there's no gating in the game, you can play it for free all the way. But of course it's not that great as LotRO. And the gameplay is maybe even more easier :)

    Hay thanks,

Ill keep LOTRO on my Hard Drive and check back often to see if it gets Fixed ( harder ).  Maybe Ill download Neverwinter for something to do, because I played everything.

Or now that I'm thinking about I'll investagate The SecretWorld, It's just that I'm not really ever in the mood to figure out secrets.

    So yah, thanks

LotRO is just as bad, linear, and hand holding. Avoid it.

MMO's never get made harder over time. If anything the next time you try it, they will have made the game easier.

Lotro may be easy but it is not bad, linear or is there hand holding.  But of course there was a post about lotro that you had not stopped by to post bias opinion of a video game you don't play.

  • JaedorJaedor Member UncommonPosts: 1,173

Lotro is a decent game but content is gated by money once you get to level 30 or so unless you are able and willing to spend tons of time farming deeds. There are threads on the forums telling you exactly how to get the most bang for your buck if you decide you like the game well enough to invest in it.

If you decide to play a runekeeper, try to find a boxed copy of the Moria expansion, which should have 30 days of game time plus the warden and runekeeper classes. Buying it will upgrade your account to premium, which has immediate benefits but the best value is a one month subscription for $15 to unlock everything while you level up.

I highly doubt it will get harder.

however, there is difficulty to be found if you want. I won't speak for any of the instances in moria as it's been a while since I played them. However I do find some of the open world small party encounters in Rohan (can't remember what they are called anymore but they are mounted combat) difficult solo.

I have been playing some of the instances solo such as the goblin king instance. It's a group instnace so I lowered the level but playing in this manner is difficult.

There is more of an open world feel if you stop doing quests and just "head out". Granted, this is a bit easier with the earlier installments of the game but it's more satisfying than doing the quests. I won't say you will level faster than doing some of the quests but I'm more about making my own fun in these things.

The Secret World is great by the way.

Played it longer than you, most likely.

Hand holding and restrictive is a perfect way to describe LotRO.

I doubt it as well, but still, many folks hoping for a nerf, that's why I added it to my post.

Great goblin... :) yep, you can still find challenge in the game that way. I tried to solo it on my undergeared hunter (48ish quest gear, on lvl57. On his defense he's a festival-only toon, gathering the outfits and housing items). So, gear is crappy, but I have +8 levels, and the game is over-easy, what can go wrong, right? Lol. The Emissary and the adds ripped him a new one :)

(but it was significantly easier, than before. I remember before RoI, at lvl65 with decent gear it was a challenge to solo the Goblin, now with the changes I think a lvl65 will clearing it without any problems, regardless the gear)

And yep, TSW is an awesome game.

  • trancejeremytrancejeremy Member UncommonPosts: 1,222

The game was always pretty easy from 1 to 20.

There are I think two slightly tough quests - the vigil, (or something) in Staddle, where you have to kill 4 signatures, including usually 2 at once. They could be a little tough on level, depending on the class.

And then there is a quest where Adso the hobbit has you go kill a bandit chief, a signature. The trouble is, he has an escort of 2 other bandits, there are about 20 other bandits in the area, including some that run.

    He also respawns insanely quick.

Sometimes (fairly often actually) you can end up fighting 6 bandits, kill him first, then by the time you are killing the last bandit, he respawns and attacks you again. On some classes that's doable (guardian, warden), on others, I've been killed (hunter).

It does get a bit more difficult in Moria. Mobs start using debuffs and such, they have more morale than you do (at least if you don't have good gear).

I haven't played much after the HD changes though.

R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there

  • Po_ggPo_gg Member EpicPosts: 5,749

There was an aggro change a few years ago (somewhere around the f2p switch), since then the Vigil is pretty easy, you can kill them off one by one (just like in the latest mmorpg comic here, Aggro :) )

The only thing I never could do in that level range is the deed of killing the Barrow bosses (true, half of them are small fellowship missions, so not even ment to be for solo). I haven't tried it after HD, my new, post-HD hunter is lvl20 already but he's still only at Adso's camp... damn that fast leveling.

(he should travel to the Lone Lands, but haven't finished Old Forest yet, and then there's Bombadil, the south guard ruins, the whole northern Bree region, and the Barrow-downs)

Mobs start to use debuffs way before Moria... When I first played rune-keeper, I hated the orcs in North Downs, always took my runestone :) and at lvl25ish rk's are completely switched off without the runestone, there's no alternate method like the other classes have if their main weapon is gone.

Not exactly related (maybe a bit, as we mentioned Goblin-town earlier), now that Smaug is arriving onto the big screen, an honest trailer came out :)  http://youtu.be/Sc32YdEWHzo

Probably not been playing since beta have almost 3000hrs on my main.  Now there is nothing wrong with having an opinion but having a bias opinion because it's not meo online is different.  I can walk from Thorins gate to helms deep without any restrictions.  I might hit three load screens, I can make stops at the Shire, Bree and Rivendell along the way to name just a few, this unrestricted journey would take over three hours.

Im confused did Frodo just wake up and walk into Mordor?  Is that what you want just to be able to start a toon and walk into Mordor and beat the game?  Cause pretty sure you would whine about that too.

So the facts are it's been out for over six years, they just added another new expansion, the journey continues.  That's what this game is a journey you follow the story line and do your part in middle earth that your part of the story has taken you (again Frodo didn't just walk into Mordor)this is Journey!.  While your not doing the story you have free roam to go anywhere in middle earth.  After I finish a battle at HD and wanted to 6man rift guess what I can no restriction and if I wanted to I could take the three plus hour journey on horse back there again with maybe 2-3 load screens.  Oh after I do rift we want to run to moria and do every instance in there again no restrictions we can do that....you let me know if you want me to keep giving you examples of how it's not restrictive.

Don't give me BS about a level one can't go in some level 50 dungeon that's a weak poor example, when in fact a level one could walk from Bree to Rivende with no restriction. Again this is a journey Frodo did not just walk into Mordor, the others didn't just stroll into Moria.  Just stop with your bias generic qq about a video game you think is "bad". There are plenty of other video games you can play have fun in those .  Trying to persuade someone who is thinking of  playing with lies is a joke.  You don't give any examples just generic "bad", "hand holding" "restrictive". When all three of those are just pure false as I have explained.

Yes, but by your ridiculous standards any game which has quest markers is 'hand holding'. Sorry, but normal people don't like to be forced to speak with every NPC in town just to find out who has a quest.

Also, you must have played the Bizarro World version of the game, because it most certainly is not linear or restrictive, at least not until Moria (so 70% or so of the game's content isn't linear). One of the problems with this game is simply deciding where to go next (and overleveling because the game is packed with quests & things to do). Granted it's no sandbox, but for a theme park game it's actually one of the more open offerings out there right now.

Can't let the truth get in the way of a good hate post though, eh?.

I was in the first round of alpha, and I played the version of the game most people don't even remember, Middle Earth Online.

LotRO is all about hand holding, limiting where you can go, and what you can do.

You try to explore without doing the linear instanced scripted quest line? Your character randomly dies for no aparent reason. Try to go into a dungeon you find? "You don't have the quest to enter here!". Try to follow a river? Invisible walls! Try to climb a mountain? Invisible walls!
Get given a quest? Every step is marked with glowing waypoints telling you what to do, with TWO trackers.

How did someone play Middle Earth Online beta?...I thought Sierra had to scratch that when they went belly up and got purchased by Vivendi. It never got to Beta..or alpha as far as I know..which may not be much.

If you think it' easy, start doing the group quests or try to burn down elites.

    It get's very challenging then

How do people remember the Sierra project, which wasn't publicized at all, more than the Turbine Middle Earth Online, which was advertised and developed for 4 years? Boggling.

LotRO IS Middle Earth Online. 9 months before the initial launch they renamed it to LotRO, delayed the game 8 months, and turned the game into a WoW clone from a sandbox.

The Sierra project was entirely unrelated.

I was actually subscribed to some Sierra newsletter. Not sure how I signed up for it. I seemed to remember something I filled out for Police Quest. Maybe that was how . I did play Space and Kings and Police quest so it could have been any of them but I really only remember ever filling some survey or what not from Police Quest. So I think that is how I started receiving a newsletter. On one of them, possibly two...I remember it had little tidbits hinting at the game. Even a screen shot I think. So long ago..lol.  I remember the Sierra project for this reason and because..at the time.. I was really only familiar with UO. Although a fan of the Ultima series I was going to hold out for a similar game based on Tolkien's creation. Of course, that incarnation never came and I gradually just forgot and never really delved into MMOs at all until years later. (Wish I'd hopped on the EQ train though).  I wasn't really hyped over the Turbine game tbo.  The first MMO I ever played was City of Heroes then WOW so by the time Turbine release LOTRO I was pretty engrossed in those two games still.  So I admit I never even heard of the Turbine Middle Earth Online precursor to LOTRO. I've since experienced LOTRO and enjoyed my brief time playing (12 months or so off and on) but sounds like it's earlier version (MEO) might have ended up a better game. Who knows.

Be careful there are some poster maybe even on this thread when called out will report you, no matter how big their lie and hate is there is no avenue to correct them.  They have their finger pointed at the report button and will not discuss facts.  Again there may be one on this exact thread.

As as for the comments above over and over and well known in the mmo universe lotro has one of the best communities of all mmos.  Now I'm not sure how you can have the best community and at the same time discourage socializing?

Id recommend youtubeing the music festival that's put on every year called Weatherstock how is that not socializing?

Every kinship I've been in we have always had kin events at our kin house again socializing.

the only way to get seal is to group (seals give you top gear) how is that discouraging grouping?

The only way to get max HD points is completing the 6 and 12 mans again how is that discouraging grouping?

Some craft items require mats from a different profession so you need to ask (socialize) with others to get those mats

i can keep going if you would like just ask nicely.

I think he ment the solofication movement of these last few years. But those are just options and not discourage anyone from groupig, let alone socialising.
