I caved in and purchased. Better be better then FFXIV. So never having played this game, should I start with a MOP Panda. I assume if I start with any other character the early levels/zone are going to be empty and MOP area will be more populated? If someone can advise what I should do, would appreciate it.
i don't think its really going to matter too much where you start. MoP has been out for long enough that i would think most folks have barreled through it and moved on.
if the monks are still a bit OP then starting there as a monk might make good sense.
mostly, pick what you think you will find to be fun. and if it turns out not to be, then don't hesitate to drop it and pick again.

Hi and welcome to the game !
It depends on what sort of character playstyle you enjoy whether you should go with a Monk.
DPS pure classes: Rogue (melee), Hunter (ranged), Warlock/Mage (magic)
Tank: Warrior, Deathknight (not available straight away)
Healer: Priest (magic), Shaman (melee, magic)
Just know that each class has at least one dps specialization tree, so say if you want to play a Priest, Shadow is its main dps specialization tree (though Discipline can also be used to dps).
Melee is very good in this game, so Monk is a good choice for melee dps or tanking. Healing does not come into its own on the Monk until later. Other nice thing is that Monks get a teleportation spell that takes them to their monastary where they can get some blue enchanted items as they level and purchase food that boost their xp gain. You can effectively level up more quickly with a Monk than other classes, not least because they are extremely mobile and kill pretty quickly.
Monk is a flexible class much like the Paladin and Druid. I found that their healing abilities are more convoluted than either Druids or Paladins though and the dps spec is squishier than either Druid or Paladin. The tank spec is very fun to play.
I would go with either a Monk, Paladin, Druid or Hunter for your first toon. Monk for the xp gains, Paladin/Druid for flexibility, Hunter because they are one of the easiest classes to play and are a lot of fun. Race does not matter... make whatever you want. Unfortunately, Paladin and Druid have the most restricted race choices. I think that most starting areas are not devoid of people... you will come across some. It is from level 15 on that the population drops until you hit level 85ish.
Other tips:
Be sure to park your character in an inn before logging out so that you get rested xp gain when you log back in. You can set the innkeeper to visible on your minimap by clicking on the magnifying glass icon, selecting "townsfolk" and then innkeeper.
I would say balance dungeon runs with discovering the game out in the wilds as you level. The dungeons are good for learning how to group up with people at an early stage and getting some blue items. However, the gameworld is really nice and it would be a shame to miss all of it. Running random PUG dungeons will net you some extra gear. Learning how to group is really important though if you plan on running heroic dungeons and raids later on.
Try to find a nice level 25 guild. Not only do you get a mass rez perk but you also get added xp benefits and you can repair your gear with guild funds.
Get your main faction up to exalted as fast as you can. You can increase faction gain with a tabard. Say if you are an orc, your main faction is Ogrimmar. There is an Ogrimmar quartermaster near the flightmaster that sells a low level blue item and a large-ish and cheap bag (bagspace is very important in this game because it is really limited). When it comes time to buy a mount and train riding, having higher faction also helps.
So I am very interested in this sale...I have never played WoW so for this price it sounds interesting.
I do have a question though; does anyone know if I make the $4.99 purchase that I have to download/install right away? Can I hold on to it for several months or even a year and activate then?
My issue is I have a couple of paid subs going already; I think my wife is going to throw me out if I add one more.....I just do not want to pass up on this deal.
Only if you buy the retail edition you can keep it inactive and activate it whenever you want. One of my friends boutgh the battlechest one year ago and coudnt remember where he putted it , this year he found it somewhere into his living room and now he plays wow.
Only by bying the digital edition it autoactivate to you account.
I am thinking about getting these also but I have a ?
When I change from ATT Dsl to Comcast cable I was not longer able to log in to battle net. A new computer later I no longer have them on my hard drive. If I get these am I going to have a problem getting a battle net account set up. I would hate to buy the games and not be able to log in.
