"Press ESC take a look at your key bindings!"

I came up with this brilliant idea while reading the column on Wildstar. The part about the 4 hour tutorial drove me to innovation. Defiance, terrible tutorial I didn't make it through. Neverwinter, same. TSW eeh. Wushu, almost didnt make it through. ESO, NDA, but yeah.

I'm accepting job offers.

Looking at the Key Bindings/Control Keys is your brilliant idea?  Sorry, but the vast majority of people will have probably been doing this for years!   I, personally, have been doing this for nigh on 15 years and consider it standard operating procedure for new games.

i think his point was that instead of incredibly long tutorials you could just tell people at the start:

Press Escape and don't forget to look at your keybindings.

One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

Tutorials are good as long as they are optional, especially for alts.  The number of times I played through that bloody DCUO tutorial.

It's to make you feel superior to other people who are playing the game as their first MMO.

The more you say, easy, know that, duh, seriously, got it, the more you stick around proving to yourself that you belong there because you will absolutely STOMP this game.

It reminds me of something mentioned in a game dev book, I think it was a quote from the guy who made the Civilization series. It was something like, you can never reward the player too much in the first x minutes. I think it's also why the lower levels are so unabashedly easy, it takes hints from that idea. I think I read it as an aside in this book. http://www.amazon.com/Game-Development-Essentials-Artificial-Intelligence/dp/1418038571/ but you can see him saying something similar near the end of this in the first section. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27654/GDC_Sid_Meiers_Lessons_On_Gamer_Psychology.php

Those tutes might be there for the seasoned person too, wink wink.

    The mythbusters deem this...

    PLAUSIBLE.

All software is developed for the lowest common denominator, if you don't do that then you're linux and nobody uses your software.
