ANet is, I'm sure, happy that the haters are hating on it, because it keeps them in the discussion.
I understand the reason for this campaign is to generate publicity and boost revenue and good luck to Arenanet personally I find it a bit distasteful but that's me, but I was trying to put the argument by Gaia that if Arenanet are so desperate so must Blizzard which is ridiculous comparing the two games and strategies, ones a game with known falling numbers in millions after years of raking in the cash in the billions. The other is a game barely a year old that's losing revenue quarter on quarter and triumphantly told the world it was going after WoW numbers and would prove the b2p model to be the real deal, don't forget the sub ripping you off arguments as well. I know which company looks the like the desperate one and they are not based in Irvine, California.
Also critique =/= hater you should know better Torvaldr
I was commenting on the random irrational jab, not your critique of the marketing. I was trying to say that even the offhand irrational posts and such are still good because it keeps them centered on the discussion.
It doesn't seem distasteful to me as it doesn't appear to be serious at all. If they actually expected and tried to enforce that, then it would definitely be in poor taste. Since it doesn't target any one game or person in particular it appears fairly harmless to me. Not that I care since advert gimmicks don't excite me.
ANet isn't losing money quarter after quarter. That's not true at all. Their revenue margin is declining like most games and entertainment after the newness wears off. That's probably why they're pulling loud marketing stunts, to try and keep the revenue numbers up. I don't see anything wrong with that. Like I said before, more publishers should be pushing their advertising. That's a huge part of their job.
Centered on what discussion? that some people are finding this campaign a bit desperate? ludicrous? distasteful? or even communist? and that's fine? its just great creativity and gets a discussion about a game that is increasingly alienating its playerbase going? there is no discussion going on other than some trying to justify this as a legitimate bit of fun. The game is suffering with lack of new players and revenue is dropping (I never said losing money) that's all this and the past years "content" has been about but many supporters seem to love sticking their heads in the sand.
How about spending the money on testing and fixing bugged content with new better content for the players that are still playing and paying rather than wasting it on "fun" advertising campaigns and giving clients away. Maybe players would hang around a lot longer and buy stuff and the revenue wouldn't be dropping. I think Arenanet would be thought of better if they did that otherwise they might end up in the same place as our beloved SOE.

Communist?
Have you noticed the "Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to play free"?
Do you know which nation has a very similar sonnet inscribed in a plaque in one of its iconic national symbols?
It is that Communist nation called the USA, that has a plaque in the base of the Statue of Liberty that reads "Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free".
There is also a thing called the Oath of Allegiance. The US Oath of allegiance goes like this
"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

See, now that goes from thoughtful critique to outright haterade. Where in that tirade did you get that they aren't spending resources in other places? Just like ActiBlizz they probably hire an ad agency. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Why would you even care how they spend their revenue? They have an advert budget. Are you trying to advocate they shouldn't advertise?
Distasteful in what way? You've used that word more than once now, but haven't qualified it. Communist? Really? Please connect how this has anything to do with a political-economic system. Or is that more irrational lashing out. They release content every 2 weeks. That's a pretty good pace. I can't think of very many games that do that, let alone subscription games. Asheron's Call might come close, but definitely not on this scale.
SoE should take a cue from both ANet and ActiBlizz. They've done better with EQN, but it could be a lot better.

Gaia as I've said before I enjoy GW2 but play it casually and because of this I usually pop in to these news threads and the official forums only when the bigger news stories hit. This campaign is a bit sad or even desperate in my eyes, yes, that's a personal feeling generally about this type of sensationalist advertising I'd feel the same with its used on other games like I did with Trions "we are not in Azeroth anymore". And I'm not the only one it seems from reading this and the official forums. Arenanet have a great base game but seem to love cocking things up regularly, the latest one? T3 cultural armour for sale in the shop which they removed because of the upset on the forums. I'm a reasonable guy but will defend my arguments and opinions if I feel they are sound and especially if I'm labled a hater.

You have a contest that is about making a video where the interested do a mock up oath of allegiance (several countries request this type of oath from individuals trying to obtain nationality and this one is a rip off of the US one).
Then there is the taxi video.
What is wrong with it?
They talk about no sub fees, waypoints and portals, every 2 weeks patches, centaurs, dragons, no grind (this is somewhat debatable) - all true.
Is it because people that aren't players find the talk about the game silly?
Again it is the normal reaction.
If the guys in the cab were talking about stamps, comics, miniature trains, clothes, whatever, people that don't share the same kind of interest will react like that.

Don't know what is wrong with this their campaign to get more players. It's not desperate move, they have player base and loyal fans, it's only that matter. Wow can die tomorrow or in 10 years, but GW2 players will still run CoF path 1!!!
Every time I look at this thread title it makes me chuckle thinking about a great MMO migration AWAY from GW2 by everyone who got sick of their living story.
The marketing strategy seems just outlandish enough to garner lots of renewed interests and publicity. What more could they ask for?
I played GW2 heavily at launch. The world is beautifully crafted. Though I wish it had a truly persistent world, rather than definite zones. Even though travel feels seamless and the zones are large, there something about WoW's persistent world that is more immersive. And while I enjoy the action based combat, the skills lack a feeling of anticipation due to instant fire and restricted damage output.

What's the point of trying to explain a concept to a guy who has a bazillion hours in GW1 and probably GW2, posts 90+% of his posts in the GW2 forum or News about GW2 and repeatedly doesn't understand others point of view? Its like trying to convince the Pope there is no God, pointless, as you'll just come up with another way to carry on the argument rather than just accepting another point of view. So if you haven't worked it out by now with this thread and the threads on the official forum, and I guess you are quite intelligent, then you never will as I'm not the only one to feel this way.

Well, hate to be the bearer of bad news but Blizzard just trumped Anet at their own game today.
So how many heart pounding minutes was it before you realised that you hadn't broken the embargo and there was just a delay in the site going live?

I, fayknaym, renounce achievement based games and do not pledge my allegiance to Guild Wars 2.
I likewise declare my freedom from achievement grinds!
That I turn my back forever on achievements which is/are totally dumb.
That I will take up arms to defend my grilled cheese sandwich and crush evil with my forum posts.
