Need some advice please

I reactivated my WOW account and am shocked by how they have dumbed down the game. It was never a super hard game but it has lost its challenge. I got a char to level 44 in 3 days. I am not sure if things get tougher at higher level's or not. I tried Rift and it just did not grab me. I downloaded my old LOTR account and it now looks very dated graphically.  I have my EVE account but sometimes want to play in a group in a fantasy game. I miss the old Everquest days of working months to max a character. Any advice is appreciated.

Level grinds are becoming a thing of the past.  I think this is a good thing, as it served little purpose beyond keeping people playing for longer just to try a new class.  However, some form of progression will always be in MMOs.

It sounds like you are looking for group-based progression.  The entire industry is less focused on group-based progression while leveling now, and puts that content at the level cap instead.  This design choice results in some players dropping when they reach the level cap because they can't adapt to the new play style, or dropping because they can't find players in a similar progression state to team up with and continue their progression.

Unfortunately, current games are probably not going to fill your desires for group-based leveling.  Just pick one which has a good end-game and little grind to get there.  Without knowing more about what you like, it is difficult to suggest a game to play.

If it's leveling grind you want, consider giving Lineage 2 a try. Even in it's more streamlined incarnation, you're going to spend many hours leveling to max (and earning enough Adena to properly gear out your character) in order to enjoy the end game sieges which really is the core of the game.

Let's see how hardcore you really are. image

I kind of disagree, I think the long "grind" gave players a goal and while fulfilling that goal "game play happened".

Anything thinking that grinding in Lineage 2 was the sole purpose didn't get the game.

You would get in groups and actually have "happenings" while "grinding". That could be pvp in the form of clan groups fighting people they were at war with or groups protecting one of their group members because that member was being attacked.

Additionally, the fighting/grinding during pve could be extremely fun as things would happen, additional spawns would appear, sometimes on top of you.

you would sometimes, in the downtime meet other players, offer them to join, have discussions, etc.

It was a lot of fun.

And then solo grinding for me (though this is "just me") was a very zen activity.

In all honesty I'd take a questless over a quest filled game any day.

I would offer that the "grinding" in say, an Elder Scrolls game" is more my style in that I would just explore and find baddies to fight.

That is usually how I play Lord of the Rings online as lately their quests (not including the new expansion as I've just started it and the main quest is actually good).

You think WOW end game gets more challenging? I being a healer used to always have to watch the mana bar and call mana breaks on occasion. The groups I played with ran me thru the dungeon so fast I did not even get to see the place. I do enjoy taking in the sites of the games I play. I play these games to kill time and zone out after a long day. It sounds strange but the grind was something I miss.
