Any idea how the free 30 days interacts with a trial offer? I've always wanted to try EvE but the monthly fee completely turns me off from it but for $5 and 40+ days of play I might give it a go.

You don't get a uddy reward by referring someone that upgrades via the starter pack. You can, however ask someone for a 21 day trial and upgrade with the pack and you just got yourself 51 days of game for $5, as well as accelerated training for 1 week (free booster).
