Ugh I cringed at the voice and had to stop.

Very impressive that Star Citizen has hit 26 million, and that is not even factoring those that have not backed but will be there on launch day.

Course if the game is poorly delivered one can only imagine what the shit bomb that will result.  Not saying that Star Citizen will, but imagine if it did with the amount of backer donations.

Can someone explain to me how the payment model and backing is setup? Coming from more traditional mmo's, I don't quite get it.

I don't see myself getting into a game where you have to pay real money for in-game items, like spaceships. Shouldn't these things be earned or bought with in-game currency? Is this their approach instead of a monthly subscription?

Are these ships exclusive pre-order type items, and after the game is launched, other ships and stuff will be earned in game? Or will it always be this way, where you must pay real money for the in-game items?

Just curious how it is setup and what all the hype is about.

P.S. I did enjoy that video lol. Good stuff!

Everything you can receive as a backer can be earned in game, though some of the rarer chassis may be hard to find or require certain faction standing.

Most of the packages however include the price of the game, plus alpha & beta access and a better than normal starting ship when the game launches.

lots of peeps will have an advantage at launch, that's the part I don't like, plus the game is a cash grab since alpha

    gameplay > graphics

  • TuchakaTuchaka Member UncommonPosts: 468
Nice thing about this is most publishers spent tons on advertising more than on the game all this money is going to actually pay for the game. Keep in mind this is a dogfighting game so if a player sucks it doesn't matter what ship he is flying. But if you wanna get alpha or beta access you gotta pay for a package, but if you bought a ship and changed your mind you can trade it in for another ship.

Actually the game isn't in alpha yet.  When the stretch goal was hit (the one to allow the game to be made without any investors or publishers) they asked the community in a poll to see if they wanted stop fundraising.

87% of the community voted that the fundraising continue to make a more solid game with more features even after launch.  Might want to read up on it a bit.

Currently all we have is a hanger module which lets you sit in your ships and walk around.......we will be getting a dogfighting module in December i believe, which will give lots of time to test arguably the most important feature of the game.

Won't be that much of an advantage really. They will certainly be more experienced since they will have tested the game in alpha/beta but that's true for any mmo. The ships that people are buying are mostly equipped with basic modules. On a 1-10 scales, it will be like 1 or 2. So there will be much better stuff to get in-game.

I agree about the cash grab tho, Robert knows how to make people spend way more than they should.

For having all that money you would think he would be giving monthly updates and videos kind of like what CU is doing., maybe they are and I am just not really looking.

Would be nice if the payment model was like guildwars 2 buy then free. not like they will be hurting for money but that would be to good to be true.

I rather hear what people actually expect from this game?

I see it being nothing more than a Wing Commander with higher poly ships, not my cup of tea for gaming.I see it trying to grab a lot of Eve fallout and those that simply never liked Eve,that is because this genre has little competition,CCP has had an easy ride.

Anyone that knows game design, knows how easy and cheap it is top develop null space ,the ONLY effort that will go into this game is the ships. So what are potential players expecting from these ships that will make this game fun to play?Multiplayer ships?great animations effects?REASON,example why are you out in space flying around, what goals will players have?I just don't see this game delivering on a triple A standard, but correct me if i am being too skeptical, tell what this will offer that makes it triple A and not WC with higher poly ships?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Yeah. you're probably right about you not really looking.  If you _were_ looking you would not be saying this.  I suggest going over to the official site and look through the info there.  Why not start with Wingman's Hangar, a _weekly_ show which provides updates on what's going on with the development of the game, answers questions from the fans and so on and so forth?  40+ episodes so far.

Not too good to be true.  Actually true.  The finished game will, at release, have a price probably at about $60.  There is no subscription fee.  There is no paywall for any content.  This is not free to play, it's buy to play.  The only thing you can buy once the game is live is a limited amount of in game credits.  The same kind you get for doing missions, so no separate "pay currency" for "premium items".  This, together with single player campaign mission disks which you can buy to expand the single player campaign og even add new single player campaigns (they've talked about campaigns which are, for example, not from a military perspective the way the initial Squadron 42 campaign will be).are what is supposed to cover the costs of further developing, expanding and running the game and the persistent universe.

They do do that already, just go look at the offical site there are plenty of videos and updates and even a subscriber option that lets you keep very close to what the dev team is doing along with Jump Point monthly issues chock full of stuff.

Did you know there will be a ground game? That the functionality is already there? One of the stretch goals for launch which was met back around 16-20 mil unlocks was ground combat and ground interactions, they plan on expanding from ground combat . atmospheric flight, bounty hunting etc,  to terraforming land, building cities and homes and farms, bases and beyond. This isn't just space combat sim... the game is going to be much more people are not looking at the info enough.

Good for them. I'm thinking of doing the $40 package myself and taking a chance on it and getting the alpha access.

I wonder what's going to happen when someone that's given him thousands of dollars decides the game doesn't live up to the hype ( they never do when they have this much )

Devs have been getting death threats for far less.... I can see this becoming an issue in future. I'm sure it's great to open your hands and have people pour money into them but...who are these people and what mental state are they in never seems to get asked.

Had to laugh at your comment, if what you say is right then I'm FUCKING mad as a hatter! Lets put it this way, some folks spend thousands of $$, ££ or even euros, on all sorts of things daily. So if like myself who has money to use from working hard then surely its down to me to decide how I spend my money. I do not drink or smoke and gaming is my vice apart from my lady of course but she is also well looked after too.

My mental state is just fine...(But come near me and I'll rip your head off and shove it up your A...hole)..No seriously just kidding image but I've spent $1000 on the game and like I posted a few weeks ago I even saw them in Koln at Gamescom and worked all day helping them to get the hanger module out in time for their evening event for nothing, why because I can and have a skill they needed.

The point your missing is that the community on the forums for this game are absolutely amazing so many people are donating not just money but supporting the dervs team with food and many other goodies. Their is a live chat and many people are already friends before the game even goes into alpha. The last time I experienced a community like this was way back in EQI days and that's what's got me buzzing and if this is what the game will be like on launch then bring it on and if need be I'll donate another $1000 to help the guys achieve what they are trying to.

Oh yeah and the contributions from some of the talent out there are second to none and Chris has even employed people because of their talent and when things are tough for folks looking to show their skills and find work then kudos to RSI I say. So instead of bitching about others go check it out and get your hand in your pocket and who knows you might even like the community your self and it will get you away from the daily moaning on here. image

I don't like the fact that backing it gets you never ending insurance for that specific ship, which is impossible to get in game, so you always have a crazy ship because you payed for the ship with real money. I understand they needed a way to back the game, but they keep adding new ships that backers can buy, and I have seen first hand how many of my friends are like "MAN I NEED TO SPEND 200$ MORE TO GET THIS SHIP ITS SO COOL LOOKING" which bothers me, specifically because if they give you the peace that you don't have to pay when your ship gets blown up that's pretty much paying to win. Plus if they are already doing this, how long until their in game cash shop starts offering unlimited insurance for payments, I know Chris Roberts said that it wont be a thing, but he did acknowledge the cash shop, I bet in less than 6 months they will have ships with lifetime insurance in there too.

The hype about LTI or Life Time Insurance is way overblown.  The cost of insuring your ship in game is going to be negligible.  It's like saying that you have a suit of armor in wow, that you never have to pay repair bills on.

LTI doesn't cover cargo and upgrades either, so unless you are flying a stock ship, you will still need to insure it once you upgrade your first gun, weapon, etc. anyway.

  • HairysunHairysun Member UncommonPosts: 1,059

Just to reiterate the comments above about "Lifetime Insurance", it really isn't that big of a deal.  Far from anything resembling a pay to win mechanic.  It is very similar if not identical to the same mechanic in "Eve Online."  You can insure your ship without LTI very easily.  Go through the process of purchasing insurance and your done.  It has been said cost is to be nominal and relative to whatever ship you are insuring.  Whether you have purchased ship insurance in game or lifetime ship insurance the results are the same if your ship goes boom.  Anything beyond you stock load out on the ship is gone.  Guns, rockets, engine upgrades, mining lasers, extra cargo space, cargo you have on board, etc, etc are gone.  You reappear on a station with your stock ship and everything needs to be purchased again.

You could make an argument on whether those potentially lost items will be insurable when in the game.  That however is not something included in the LTI.  The LTI mechanic is a minor convenience given to those that wish to support the game during it's development process.  Certainly not anything close to a  pay to win button.
