Star Citizen passes 25 Million in crowd funding

NomadMorlockNomadMorlock Member UncommonPosts: 815

Star Citizen passed 25 Million in crowd funding last night.  I finally pledged.  I want to see what an experienced game designer can do without a publisher or other investors calling the shots.

There's many ways to part a fool from its money.

I hope for the sake of those who donated that this is not one of them.

Maybe now we will see some proper gameplay footage for change. Not some cut-scenes or fucking around the ship/hangar.

    Proper gameplay footage?

I guess you didn't realize that every Star Citizen video is rendered 100% in the game engine in real time...

Even if it was rendered using the game engine, it doesn't make it gameplay footage. I want atleast a 10-minute uncut demo of someone flying around and shooting stuff - playing the game.

You should see that in December or January when the dogfighter module goes live.  The game is still in pre-alpha.  They are still working on art assets for each possible ship configuration, etc.

I have to say it's an interesting read (and watch - videos) to see how they are bringing on other studios and which ones are working on Planetside environments, Avatar customizations, the main storyline, etc.

They have definitely been ramping up to be able to spend the money they are taking in...  Integrating the work from the inside teams and the outside studios must be a monster project.  I'm interested to know if they will be able to keep on schedule.

Yes it is risk, all crowd funding projects are risks, hell, every funding or investing is risk. But from my point of view it's really very minor risk in terms of  amount of money I'm risking and donating full game price to developer whose games I loved, is risk i'm willing to take.

I agree.  I've also been playing MMO's since Ultima Onliine.  This is the first time I feel like the game development is being driven by people who want to play the game with no publisher or investors able to force an early launch or change development direction.

I always liked Brad McQuaid's "vision" as a developer, but he was always under the thumb of Microsoft or Sony.  Then again he also didn't turn out to be a very good manager in the end.

I'm good with investing to support this type of development.  Games driven by the people who want to play the game.  After all these years it's worth it to me for the chance of something really special.

Here are my thoughts on Star Citizen:

"I definitely agree with the overhyped vibe some have pointed out. I'm not a huge fan of crowdfunding, especially if I'm not intimately acquainted with the product. I'll like to see the launched product before I pay anything, and whether I end up playing depends on if they over-monetize in game content.

I suspect they've already crossed that line as I hear you can basically skip 60h of gameplay with real cash. I know that may anger some S[tar ]C[itizen] fans, but it's a big issue to me. I play online games to get outside the normal realm of everyday socio-economic strata, not to carry that with me.

The fans are another matter, but it's a reminder of reasons I'm glad I play V[endetta ]O[nline].

Long story short: I may check it out at launch if I have the time and energy, but V[endetta ]O[nline] has already filled that twitch-based space game void in my life (and has since the days of X-Wing and Escape Velocity)."

Nope. It's the guy who thinks a game is vaporware until he saw some real gameplay movies.

Please do tell what part of the gameplay which includes 60h you can skip with real money.  Since you are quoting the hourly figure you must have pretty detailed information on that topic.  So please, delve deeper into that since I would like to know more of what you know when it comes to this.

As far as I know this game hasn't released any aspect of gameplay other than being able to run around a hangar and looking at a ships a person has purchased by helping to fund this game.

  • NomadMorlockNomadMorlock Member UncommonPosts: 815

He is referring to some of the ships that are awarded to backers.  All of these can be acquired in game, but the largest may take 60 hours of gameplay to acquire...  so if you are a backer with this ship he is saying you've effectively skipped this game play.

Personally I'm fine with this as it ensures the game gets made.

As NomadMorlock mentions, one of the largest ships will require up to 60h of gameplay to acquire (according to rumor), however, I understand it can also be purchased for a sizeable amount of cash ($250, I think?).

These are fairly standard crowdfunding tactics, but I disagree with it in principle, for the reason outlined in my above post.  I think there is a line to be crossed; where it is exactly is hard to say, but from my personal perspective RSI is way past it.  Again, this is only my opinion.

It is always that the other people invest lots of money into a game that i may or may not like.

What is sizeable amount of cash for one is almost nothing for someone else. Many of these crowd funding projects have fan base of older adults for whose those kind of money might not be problem and they will pay it out nostalgy for games they played when they were younger.

You dont have to pay it. But for many with jobs those 250$ is worth less than 60h of grind.

    @Phaserlight

Only problem with that statement is, that you don't need that particular ship for anything in the game - unless you want to haul cargo in an "Millenium Falcon"-style space ship. It doesn't matter for the universe, if you are pledging now to start with the Constellation, or if you are flying the Aurora for the next 60 hours. The Constellation doesn't take you closer to golden endgame land, where all the shiny equipment and challenging raids for you for there will be no endgame. It just allows you to haul cargo in a medium sized ship with your friends.

Sure, there will be progression, and there will be regions of space where death awaits you. But progression will be mainly horizontal (it's not about bigger and better, but about specialization) and at no point throughout your career you will have to get a certain ship or a certain piece of equipment to be able to enter a new region of space. There is no content gating. The Constellation doesn't put you in a superior position, it just puts you in a different role. Both the Constellation and the Aurora can go everywhere in the universe. They simply handle the dangers of space in different ways and fill out different roles.

It's obvious. I mean, if Star Citizen would wok like a typical themepark-MMO, everybody would have to work towards an Idris Corvette. After a few months everybody would be flying a cap-ship. No, the universe is designed to give every ship and every role a place. Your Constellation could need a escort in low-sec space. That would create a job for me and my space fighter, which was made for such jobs. And to fill your cargo hold with resources, another player will have to fly a ship that is suitable for a mining.

The real problem here is that after ten, twelve years of themepark-MMOs there is a huge crowd of people who think that "more expensive" automatically means "bigger, better, faster, stronger, deadlier, superior". Of course those people are worried or even upset, when they see, that other people can just throw 250 bucks at CIG and start with a Constellation. But again, a Constellation doesn't put in a superior position. You might win more dogfights due to the size of your ship, but because of its size it will lose in other scenarios - and always be a much more attractive target for pirates, while no ones cares about the 300i and its few tons of cargo.

By the way, the pledge ships will be replaced pretty soon after launch. There will be much more ships in the final game than we see now, and there will upgrades of the model series. The game will launch with the Constellation MkIII, but by the time you have the funds to get that baby, there will be a Constellation MkIV. And every player will have to work hard to get the new ships. A year after launch LTI and pledge ships will play a much, much smaller role than they do now.
