Patch 2.4 (biggest patch since release) Tuesday

That's right folks, for those of you that never gave this game a spin, try it.  IMO it is really one of the best MMO's out there.  And with this patch things are just going to get better.

I have been looking for a MMO for a few years now. I bought into the hate about this game and decided that I didn't want to try it. Boy was I missing out.  One of the most polished MMO's out there.   For those sitting on the fence give it a go, what do you have to lose.

Edit: On a side note I haven't been in a MMO community (mature) like this since Anarchy Online.  No characters named "Mollestar" (looking at you RIFT) running up to me and laughing at me, and then sending me a tell that I am "sad"....

No talking about silly stuff in chat or being racist towards people of other ethnic backgrounds...Seriously if you ever got to play Anarchy Online you know what I am talking about, the community that played that MMO acting like ADULTS.  People who play this MMO seem to have some sense, and that next to the combat is what I really LOVE about this game.

And polished? The Hero Engine joke is all over the internet because of the constant skill delay in this game, which makes pvp look like a messy joke.

I have the same experience as you. When i first played it, i couldn't even understand why i didn't try it for so long. Sure there are some small gimmicks still somewhere but the game is so much polished right now. And the dungeonsflashpoints are amazingly fun to me. They are also updating the contents regularly. The hate that this game still gets is really too much seeing how much it's improved after the launch.

P.S. don't worry about the folks, there are tons of other people playing the game. The population has also increased quite a bit even though the summer has ended. And after 2.4 tomorrow, we will again see a big spike for a couple of days. Also, only 4 hour downtime :D

Yeah people were mostly buthurt because they blindly followed the hype and couldn't handle it very well, when it turned out to be yet another "WoW clone". But it definitely is a highly polished and well made game inside Star Wars universe, very worth playing and all the pennies you might spend on the way; despite some flaws some may point at.

I never understood what's WoW clone-ish about it except for the trinity but it is something people are demanding everywhere.

The classes? It's something we see in every game.

Heroics and all are unlike WoW.

It's also not a full sized sandbox like WoW.

    Companions are unlike WoW again.

Crafting is different again because of the presence of crew skills.

Honestly, i would love it if someone could actually explain to me why people say it's a WoW clone.

I guess the combat. It's polished like WOW.

IMO only a few games get the combat right in MMO's.  From what I have seen that was WOW, City of Heros, Perhaps DC Universe Online and this game.

I dunno haters will hate but for those of you that want a very polished MMO I think you might want to give this a try.  Also the community is freaking great, even on the PVP servers.

As long as it requires a sub (dont say its free pls, because it isnt at all), i m out. I bought it, played the free month and that was it. If it goes like RIFT's payment model, then i might get back to check it again.

Still downloading the "patch" that came out. I was the lucky one with the Oh hey you get to download the whole game again.....but we are only gonna let you download at speeds between 9kb-56kb.

I dont get it..........WHY SWTOR ARE YOU SO MESSED UP WITH THE DOWNLOAD SPEEDS!!!

I just downloaded a game off steam and was cruising between 500-800kb.

So....what is in this patch that makes it the biggest since release?  I kind of thought the last major patch was the biggest since it put a new world in and upped the level cap and all that.  Don't mention any of the typical stuff like new dungeons, raids etc. because that's all this game ever adds.  People who left don't want more of the same they want something more.  Like our ships actually being used for personal housing and such, mini games, worlds that feel like worlds and not some strange hallway design.  So...what is the draw to this patch?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my few classes to endgame but the game is very one sided and lacks a great deal of world building qualities.  I may wander back into it at some point, but like I said above, institute new mechanics are don't bother calling.

If you have already enjoyed the class stories and you are not into dungeons/raids then this patch won't be for you.
It adds a new planet, 2 new dungeons/operations and the dread war saga as well as some PvP zones.

The biggest problem people had with this game was lack of end-game which they are rectifying with more and more end-game every patch.

You would be better to come back (if you want) on the SSSP release.

P.S. The patch you're talking about was the expansion not a patch. There were several patches after that which added a couple more dungeons and operation and some PvP arenas but this will be most probably the biggest one after the expansion.

The community is bloody amazing and very interactive most of the time. It's one of the few good ones besides GW2 imo. But don't say it here. I don't want to ruin it. The only reason these 2 games continue have such a great community is because sites like these and the people (?) that reside on it keep on hating it and don't try it.

Just look at FFXIV, it got hyped so much and during the first month the community was utter shit. Look at their forums for the constant grieving and attitude issues people have. It might probably improve after the whiners quit it but right now it's more shit than a pile of shit.

Tried it, up to quite close to the end of the 2nd part of the JK story... I was so bored out of my mind I logged out, noticed how much space the damn thing actually occupied and deleted it.

I have a couple of questions that hopefully some players can answer:

    1. Are these patches free - I bought the original game and played for a few months)

    2. I did wander back as a ftp player sometime ago, but compared to other ftp models - Rift for example - the swtor one just seem geared to getting you off ftp onto a sub model. In fact it reminded you of the penalty of ftp at every quest. Has this ftp model changed much?

Thanks in advance for answers to the above

    1. You can sub just for a month to get the Hutt expansion for free. Even if you don't you will get the patches but you might be not be able to travel there because it's level 55 content.

    2. Nope, the devs clearly say that f2p is just like a demo (even though you can complete all the stories without paying any thing) and they want player to sub to enjoy the game. Although you can buy certain things to get rid of the restrictions within like 20 USD if you don't like sub.

Honestly, i would love it if someone could actually explain to me why people say it's a WoW clone.

    Wow clone:

    No full loot.

    no exploration

    not an actual sand box

    no open world pvp focus

gear grind - pve and pvp

No world influence - just a continuation per expansion with more quests and more gear grinds

New wow clone - no or limited end game

lack of innovation or improvement. Vo is not big, and the space mini game was a bad replacement for swoop racing. Companions was about the only thing that made swtor different as a wow clone from others with something unique. And hutt ball, but thats more of a mini game.

    crafting is simple

quests are simple and boring - except for class story and world arc

    no dynamic events

    lack of npc movement

    limited character creation

    cash shop

    no mounted combat

    no gambling/mini games

    no player bounties

no player housing/ decoration. Large houses, guild castles/ships, house design

    no player made content

Biggest problem with a wow clone- alts. Having to reroll different classes to try different combat and few of the unique quests among the many plain and same ones for all classes on the same faction. Then doing gear grinds for alts as well for the same end game content, which is really a waste of time the first time, and the 2nd time or more is why wow clones suck. Added to the fact alting and synergizing rewards other than money is badly implemented or non existent. Since in wow and swtor there is no long term goal and reward for example like a big house.

I would say no day/night cycle, but wow has that, and better open world pvp, among better pvp options like BGs. Also wow isbetter optimised   with dx11, but the graphics are better in swtor but perfoance is very important for massive multiplayer.

The great thing about swtor is class story. Its almost 2 years and no new class stories. So everything is pretty much a wow clone in that sense in the points mentioned.

I really wish swtor was a coop for their class story, and their online mmo was a sand box with player created content, raids, pvp, mini  games, player housing etc. it would have been a better mmo and a better single player/coop.

I wanted to like this game, but for me as a few others it felt like WoW in space.  The reason for that was the combat and the buttons (so many freaking buttons eventually for each power and the macros), also some of the classes resembled Wow's with the abilities, and constant questing (though many games resorted to running up to an npc and fetching their plate on the other side of the room, just seemed Wow was the one that brought this forth).

I never liked the companion, thought that just meant why bother with finding other people except for dungeons when I have this person following me doing something I couldn't (tank, heal, or dps).  Though doing some of the elite quests helped to have  a party tough you could get away with just one other person and their companion.

Otherwise the story was good, and the voice over was done well.  I did like playing a Jedi, though I'll always prefer Galaxies (early version of course) over this one.

Would have loved it be a skill builder and not a level based game.  Maybe it's this format of games that bores me anymore and I'm more into the constant moving styles like Firefall or GW2.

Wake me up when they add a space sim expansion like Star Citizen.... or revamp the graphics....until then.. zzzzzz...

Ah, ok thanks for the reply and not ripping my head off, like many are wont to do these days.  Yeah, I dabble in raids but I don't enjoy endlessly running them over and over for gear.  I'm an explorer and avid fan of more stories and quests.  Can't wait for the SSSP to hit.

2.4 patch brings arena to the game.

I see huge balance problems incoming.  Does BW even have a class balance staff anymore?  Most of the patches see to only affect the cartel market (by adding more stuff to buy to complete collections).

I wonder if they will drop the 3 spec talent trees in place of the system WoW currently has...

holy crap that's hilarious .. and sad .. but mostly hilarious.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)
