A project in development that's worth checking out:  Gods and Idols ( http://www.godsandidols.com ).

If you are looking for a singleplayer game with deep gameplay, huge galaxy and mod friendly i suggest Distant Worlds With all the expansions.

Best x4 game ever made imo.

Or you could check out the next installment in the X-Series:

    http://www.egosoft.com/games/x_rebirth/info_en.php

It will be the 4th in a series of truly epic (and highly moddable) 4X space sims. Also likely the most beautiful gfx seen in ANY space game ever.

Some other space-based single player 4x games to consider.

Imperium Galactica II - a nice mix of colony building with an interesting, randomized story and tactical space and ground combat.  Very under-appreciated, IMO.  From GT Interactive software.

Master of Orion I and II -- the classic games.   MoO I is more abstract, but is still playable via DosBox.   MoO II takes a lot more from Civilization and is too much about micromanagement, IMO.  As long as the first one still works, I'll consider it a superior game.

Galactic Civilizations II -- A very in-depth (and newer) take on the MoO 2 model.  If you love micromanagement, a massive technological tree, more ship components, a graphical ship building tool, a lot more micromanagement and have a month to play a game, this is your game.  There once was a fairly active modding community with all sorts of scenarios, nice looking ships, even more technology and other nice add-ons.

If you prefer RTS to turn-based for your space battles, you might want to check out Sins of a Solar Empire.   Relatively simple production and planetary development, but the space battles can be brutally fun.

If you check around via your local search engine, you will probably find a number of other 4x space games from the shareware or freeware market.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

If you're looking for an MMO, Earth & Beyond might be worth giving a shot. More than a few people seemed to like that game, although I've never played it. However I believe it still survives somewhere out there......(google it).

And of course there's EVE too.

Gonna agree with Maugrim here ..  hands down best 4x space sim .. is DW but you dont have to get the last expansion right away .. the first 2 are a must buy tho for the shear amount of mechaincs and upgrades they bring..

also for can try Star Sonata 2

Novus AEterno might be something worth checking out. It's still on kickstarter, but already funded. So not a finished product but atleast it's an mmo and seems like something you might be looking for.

Not tonight dear...I have a haddock!

Spore.  Lolz.  Not good but you really start from the bottom and work up.  I would have been happy to stay an amoeba.

Ohh, soooo much this. Love the game and would love to see a remake. I think there is some similiar game in the working now but dont remember its name.

Yeah, Masters of Orion II is one of my all time favorite games.

I will also put in another vote for Galactic Cililizations II as I love the idea of designing your own ships using various supplied assets.

I'll also put in a bid that is a little off the topic for Andromeda. It's not a conquer space game but more of a "you land on a planet after your ship explodes (though I think the updated version takes this bit out) and have to colonize a planet along with 6 other opposing factions.

You research technology and all the while have to deal with "the planet" which seems to have its own agenda. A really great game.

  • Really enjoyed Master of Orion 2 back in the day. May be worth checking out if you're not intimidated by old graphics.

There is a lot to it.  It's very detailed, but as far as I could tell you could automate everything. There are lots of tutorials on Youtube too.

I'd recommend it. It's a good game, unfortunately, they are asking WAY too much for it, especially when you factor in the expansions.

I went on a search for a really good 4x space game this summer.  DW was probably the best of the newer ones I tried.

    No, just no!

Consider X3-Albion Prelude.  But stay far away from X-Rebirth. Really, don't even consider it. And if you insist on checking it out, google some reviews, then you will know why you should not have checked it out ;)

MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.

Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?

Galactic Civilizations II currently has a digital download price of $9.99 for the game w/both expansions included. That's hard to refuse. It's now time to play this game I guess.

When you write space colonization game to me that's a very different thing than just another 4X game. There are a few titles specifically about building a colony on another world in early access on STEAM right now. Both Maia and Star Forge might be worth looking at. There are a few older titles out there but of such age I am not sure they would run on modern operating systems.

I agree, DW is the best x4 space game ever made, If it were true 3D such as Hegemonia It would be even better.

I really loved Master of Orion 2 and Alpha Centauri. Sad, they hardly make anything like that now. All space games of recent years had been meh.
