New Player Questions

I have several new person questions.

I am level 13, tactical, and I choose a cruiser ship.  I am hoping that being tactical (damage) with a cruiser (defense) is good thinking for balance.  Does that sound right?

With this combination are there certain skills I should get for sure?  And what about the bridge crew?  I got a science bridge officer loaded up on tricorder for healing, but that is really all I’ve thought about.

If I decide to change any of these things will it cost real money?

And if anyone can point me to some guides that might answer these types of questions in the future I would be grateful.

Thanks for any help

Tac captain in a cruiser (or any other ship) does sound right. Though at lvl13, and for leveling anything is ok, and at lvl20 you can choose an another ship anyways :)

In STO (in space at least) your actual ship and crew determines your role. The captain and his personal skills have only a smaller part in your build. For example, in a cruiser you can tank / hull heal. Min/maxers would take an Eng captain for the job, but with the right Bridge Officers you can perform close to that level as a Tac captain too.

Change with real money: you can shuffle and swap your ships and your Officers all the time, for free. You have limited slots as free player, I don't know the exact numbers but I think you can have 6 ships +1 shuttlecraft for free, and maybe 6 Bridge Officers. This latter is the harsher restriction, with only 6 BOff on your roster you can fill only one role - but of course it's not a problem if you plan to do that in the first place, for example you only want to focus on dps. If you plan to play as a tank / heal / cc as well, you'll probably need a few more Bridge Officer - or starting an alt, but for free you get only 3 character slots.

The only change that needs money is captain skill respec. It's rarely necessary, and in STO you can earn money in-game, so if you want to retrain your skills, you can get the money for it with playing.

Guide: I'm not sure there is a beginner one, but both stoacademy and the sto wiki are cool pages for looking up some answers. The wiki even has a nice basic guide:  http://sto.gamepedia.com/Guide:_Basics

If I decide to change any of these things will it cost real money?  Only subscribers get free resets.  F2pers get one free reset then it's 500 c-store coins a go.  You can trade dilithium for coins btw.

    Thanks for any help
