General: Trion to Close England Location

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

According to an article at GamesIndustry.biz, Trion Worlds has confirmed that it will be closing the Guildford, England branch of the company. This confirmation comes on the heels of the news released last week that the San Diego studio would be closing.

As part of its recent company realignment, Trion's European publishing office based in Guildford, UK, will be closing down," said a statement shared by Jonathan Goddard, director of communications at Trion Worlds Europe Ltd.

"European localised versions of Trion's live and upcoming games will not be affected as all regional game development and support continues from Redwood City, CA."

Probably a good thing. The new CEO, Scott Hartsman, seems to be getting trion in the best shape to move forward!  Looking forward to see how things play out from here....

How many stories like this have to come out before newer game studios learn not to try and expand too fast. Rift brought in some money, which was good and got them rolling strong. Then they jumped into 2 more developments (that we knew of so there could have easily been another project in the works that wasn't mentioned yet) on top of keeping Rift running. Defiance isn't popular and they've stopped production on EoN.

If they had just focused on Rift while starting up just 1 other project they would have been ready to handle not having another success and could have continued on without shuttering 2 of their studios and laying off people.

CCP decided EvE was doing so well that they also started up 2 other projects (again that we know of, studios typically have things going for a bit before announcing anything) and then realized it couldn't support all of it at once and cancelled one while getting Dust out which doesn't seem to be much of a success either.

Grow slow, don't run out and try to do it all at once just to have to cancel projects and close studios.

The one where all production has been halted until they decide what to do.

Ok let's be technical then. They pulled off the majority of the workers on the project to put them back onto EvE and left the game with, their words I believe, "with a significantly reduced team". Keep your hopes up that a good product will pop up from that.

Production on both EoN and Defiance was well underway before Rift even launched.  Archage is the big mistake trying to take any game and convert it to NA standards is a crapshoot they should drop it.  Elrar has a big job trying to be Community lead for two games imagine if he could just focus on Rift.

That just strengthens my point. Starting development on one game and then before that has launched starting development on two more is a massive risk for a studio if everything doesn't pan out perfectly and quickly. Companies want to be such huge players with a wide range of video games so quickly that they keep over-extending themselves to the point that one hiccup or one slowdown in revenues can topple everything.

Getting Trion in the best shape to move forward? It would have helped if they wouldn't have went backwards for years in first place.

What they are doing for a while and especially recently rather looks like some final desperate moves to not go totally down with a bang.

Trion always bit off more than they could chew. This closure follows on the heels of the Closure of their SF office as well. Hartsman got them where they are today and won't be done until he totally drives the company into the ground.

It does sound like they are trying t obite off more than they can chew....Downsizing is a part of business and no one is exempt......The key now is to get these things under control before it really spirals.

All my experiences with Trion, as a company (I'm not talking about their games), have been terrible.  I won't be sad to see them close down for good.

You're a little behind in the news. They've turned EoN into a moba which is currently in Alpha right now.

That news came out BEFORE the SF office, where the EoN team were located, got shut down.

Well if they had not switched they would most likley had to close the head office too... So I think they take the small victories over the big ones.

Judging by Rift, they kind of suck in that department.  Havent played defiance though.

As for Archeage, I hope they dont think their savior will be an eastern forced PvP game.

This, I think the money was pretty much dead before the switch.  they made the switch not out of greed, but out of necessity.

Trion's lack of success in the East didn't help.

Rift Korea closed early this year. The Rift launching in China fizzled out quickly and the Chinese servers were infested with bots. Hopefully the bots will not come to the Rift servers in fhe West in force too.

That was the issue.  The RIFT playerbase had quietly declined since it launched, until it was becoming so small that it couldn't survive as a P2P.  It was a pretty technically solid game, but also a very derivative, "more of the same" game.  It did not compete well in a market saturated with very similar games.

Never happy to hear about closures, but Trion's games have been mediocre, and they spread themselves too thin with only the financial support of marginal titles.

The team of 70+ is still larger than a lot of other studios. Also, quite contrary to your statement above, they are finally working on World of Darkness exclusively instead of supporting Dust 514 and EVE Online.

In fact, if you're talented and motivated, CCP is hiring for the World of Darkness team.
