They owe you nothing, as you paid for the value you received along the way. They could shut down the servers for good tomorrow, and they wouldn't owe you anything.
This is silly, of course they owe EQ players something.
We supported the game, all you people who jumped to WoW or Guild Wars or played the game for 2 years and bailed did not.
If it wasn't for EQ players you would not even be on this forum right now.
Their funding for EQNext is coming from EQ player's pockets.
It is completely normal that EQ players feel like they should honor the franchise where possible.
SOE does not owe you anything and they never owed you something. You bought the game and played it. You paid. Good. Game is first of all a service and you still have your EQ1 and EQ2 and SOE will continue to support the games. SOE LIVE 2013 was great and devs said to their gamers that they are important to them.
When developers make a game they are making the game THEY want first of all and only people will vote with their wallets. That's why the game is called Everquest NEXT and not Everquest 3 or something. The assumption that SOE owe you something is ridiculous.
First off, people need to stop posting about how the entire EQ community is pissed about EQN. Just because you may be does not mean that the majority is. Most people I've talked to about it are actually excited or are curious to see how it turns out.
SoE came out and said they were doing something new and different. An EQ1 Reboot with new graphics is by no means new and different. To expect that was just foolish. Some core principals and mechanics might be in EQN but thats it. If you're that upset about EQN then stop reading about it, posting and caring about it. There are plenty of people out there who are excited and want to hear more. If you're going to just post long lists of complaints then don't even bother posting anything at all.

That's like saying all of the owners of old Mustangs deserve to be treated exclusively to a future design of a Mustang that they enjoy. Sure, you supported the brand and the model, but that doesn't mean they owe something to you specifically for all future iterations of the vehicle. I don't suppose you want the interior of a '64 Mustang in your brand new '14 mustang, with a different outside design, do you?
If you want to use the honoring the franchise card, how are they not doing that? They are using the lore, the world, that everyone loved and are injecting it into the new game, but with a different face and different equipment. They are 100% honoring the franchise, especially by progressing the franchise and making it into something that will push the genre forward as a whole.
So what is the issue with Holy Trinity? There is none.
That's why Sony Online Entertainment hired "STORY BRICKS" www.storybricks.com developer that will create the AI system for mobs. Holy trinity is an old idea that worked well for only one game "World Of Warcraft" and Blizzard did everything with it what possible and impossible with it. you can't do something more with that system because it is limited. AI in this system does not exist.
If you can create good AI the possibilities are endless and battles in the end will have more depth, strategy and tactics. In the end you can also upgrade scripts and AI with patches and that is what Story Bricks are going to do with EQN.
have you ever played an MMO you could'nt be more wrong about the holy trinity or static roles for players in general. And as i said earlier you can create AI all you want ut mob attacks will always look the same. hence you can learn how they do things even if they are randomized. Just look at Dark souls, mobs have a few certain ability's you encounter the mobs observe them dodge where you can act acordingly and keep observing them. It becomes as boring as the non AI gameplay we have now. The thing wich makes dark souls chalanging is that when u take a hit your mostly near dead unless you outgear the area.
That's like saying all of the owners of old Mustangs deserve to be treated exclusively to a future design of a Mustang that they enjoy.
Most brands actually do this. I know BMW, Mercedes and Ferrari do this.
We get a note in our mail of a new model from Mercedes before the press and an option to buy it, because we have been buying the cars in our family for years.
In fact, in the case of Ferrari, often the car is already sold out before the press gets to see it.

This is a game first of all. They said "thank you" already at SOE LIVE 2013. What else do you want? SOE devs can't just make your Dream game or mine. They are making a product that they are going to be proud of. They are making the game that they always wanted to make.

They will sell it regardless, but for car companies it is very common to treat loyal customers to invites to see the new car and to give them the option to buy it before others.
Most people loyal to mercedes can drive the car months before anyone from the press has a chance to try it.
REAL REASON PEOPLE ARE UPSET: We got a keyhole view of the game and people are assuming they know the rest of whats is behind the door. They think they know everything about the game and pre-judging the game without waiting for the real details. Myself, Im glad to wait for the details to make an informed choice if I want to spend money on this game.

Because they keep customers this way.
Okay, that is wonderful! I don't see how that pertains in any way to this conversation at all. I feel like you are throwing out information just to be right in some way. Just to bring you up to speed, the main idea / topic in this conversation: the game in it's current direction should not be produced or released because the people afraid of change think it somehow threatens their fun.

Dark Souls is a bad example. It's AI is not that great.
Let's talk about Guild Wars 2 that failed with the system that does not require Tanks/Healers and DPS. The only thing why this idea never worked for them is because AI in this game was not there. All mobs in the game are aggressive and they choose only one target they see first or the target that hits them hard.
Good AI is not predictable and before we talk about AI we need to see it and only then we can judge it.
So much butthurt over so little information. If they remade EQ 1 in this day and age they might as well just burn their money. If you indeed an memo vet as you claim I don't know how you couldn't be happy about EQ Next. People have been wanting a game like this for over a decade. Someone finally puts the pieces parts together and all they hear is "waaaahhhhhhh, we want more of the same! Why did you change things???"
They owe you nothing, as you paid for the value you received along the way. They could shut down the servers for good tomorrow, and they wouldn't owe you anything.

+1 Kharisha. This overwhelming sense of entitlement from consumers these days is outrageous. You pay for a service, you receive a service. If you are not satisfied with the service, you speak with the person in charge and they either make it right and keep you as a customer, or they tell you to move along and you take your business elsewhere. A game company is a business, whether you like it or not, and they have to make money somehow. Rehashing the same game isn't going to bring in more money and make the company any more profitable.
I'm still playing EQ and the only thing that gets me irritated about EQN is how people are taking the smallest snippet of info and extrapolating it into the end of days.
That's like saying all of the owners of old Mustangs deserve to be treated exclusively to a future design of a Mustang that they enjoy.

You know I think a better way to put it is.... Mustangs have competition, and that new car on the block its ESO, and yes, SOE will gain their 5% WoW player base which is massive, but they'll lose their 33% player base over this one. Hell your right, 66% of EQ players want this game, that's fine. I'm guessing by all the negative posts the 33% are the people who started on eq1 or eqoa, So SOE doesn't owe me anything, they definatly don't owe me a new mustang, because around the block is my ferrari f430 (ESO) and it looks much faster and better. I guess people who like eq Next don't care about the 33%, the 33% to them is just a stepping stone to their game. I understand that because that's how business works. So I'll take my money elsewhere, I wouldn't want to play with people who are not as good and the likable community base like the 33% were who started playing eq1 and eqoa, Of course that discussion is for another day.

I have to say the only proper AI i have encountered is in Halo, Where the little grunts would actually be scared off u if youd jump out from behind a wal guns blazing. They could even drop their grenades if they where holding them at that time. Th bigger ones more fearless often teamed up to flank you etc. The reason i love halo. that and its co-op feature.
You can make AI like that but the only thing it would change is they would go for a random or weak target. mobs however are always bound to a certain skillset and are limited in what they can do to you.

I know some people who have played it since beta, that's 14 years.
Some of the players are actually developers now on EQNext.
I really don't like new players from WoW or Guild Wars to walse in with stupidity that "trinity sucks" or some other stuff. Get lost, seriously, you wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for them.
I agree with you OP. It's unfortunate that the genre has moved so far towards the ezmode, casualized, convenient, single-player oriented games that are out today.
Us old-school board gamers and D&D'ers appreciate the forced grouping and challenging combat. We never imagined playing a game like that by ourselves. We enjoy the socialization. It also was pretty common to die and you never "face rolled" the content.
Even though I'm older now.. married with kids.. and don't have the time to play like I did EQ1, I still enjoy a very challenging, group-oriented experienced when I can play. If I want to play a game with convenience and that I can solo, I'll just play a single player game. The problem is there's not really a single viable option out there right now for those of us who like the old school EQ1 mechanics and group design.
I loved WoW: BC and early WOTLK and MoM Lotro. Do I want that again? HELL YEA. Do I think it will happen? HELL NO. How any of you thought EQN was gonna be EQ 1 2.0 boggles my mind.

I think they also owe vanguard players an updated game too, SHAME ON YOU SMEDLY, take our cash and pander to another player base!
<=== EQ player...
and I'll thank you not to speak for me. In fact, you have no authority to speak on behalf of EQ players at all. Only yourself.
Personally, I like the direction I see EQN going. It looks like it will be more sandboxy than the original -- which I always wanted to happen.
