[Column] General: Heroes of Cosplay

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,126

Cosplay is one of the most interesting parts of attending any Comic Con or gaming convention. In her latest column, Genese Davis looks at the cosplay phenomenon. See what she has to say and check out some amazing screens before heading to the comments.

Many cosplayers describe cosplay as “Becoming a live sculpture of your favorite character,” and explain that while cosplay is for the most part a hobby, it’s also a passion, and one of the best ways to show your affinity for the anime, manga, comic book, video game, TV, and film characters that are most memorable or influential.

nothing wrong with being passionate about your hobbies. friends in europe seem to see jobs as a means to make money so you can enjoy life and be passionate about your hobbies. over here it seems we overemphasize being passionate about work at the expense of our life outside of that.

enjoy your job, but enjoy your hobbies more.

"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

Is that your Frostmourne? You really look mesmorized by it. I have to admit I am and I'm only looking at a picture of it.

Cosplay is pretty cool imo, I see the crowds gathered and cant help but think I would be a bit on edge. Just that someone would be taking thier thief roles a little to seriously.

I also cant help but be sensitive to those the vitcims and families associated with the James Holmes shootings. I get a mixed bag of feelings now.

Single best cosplay video I have seen yet is the 24 minute long Dragoncon 2012 EPIC cosplay video up on youtube.

Some of those people spent thousands on making their costumes, especially the robot costumes.

The few cosplay videos I have seen always reminded me of soft core porn. Until someone told me otherwise I thought cosplay was Asian inspired porn really.

SCA..been doing this for 20+ years.

    LARP...been doing this for...20+ years.

Cosplay...since when did cosplay apply to anything other than a crossdresser putting on their SaliorMoon outfit?

People have been dressing up in costumes of characters...well, I'm over 40, and we were doing it in my 20's.  I have a definate negative vibe with the term cosplay probably because of the japanese anime and it's propensity for child pr0n.  If I am at a GenCon and someone comments on my ...cosplay... it's not going to end well.

I'm getting too old I guess.

Genese Davis: i think you perfectly fit in the costume of "Black Canary" from DC, or Emma Frost from Marvel ;)

Honestly what I've seen of a lot of cosplay leads me to believe that it's like Halloween for some girls where the object is to dress in as little of clothing as you can.

I admit, I shall be cosplaying at Otakon next week.  I only ever do it one day (generally the first).  I'm bringing little me so it'll be simplified.  It is what it is.

I'm pretty much like Ziegler, some fiddling with larp in the past and aged out of the recent cosplay fad, now closing to 40 :) but I do like the design and performance part of cosplay as an audience member.

To the fan you quoted "“... but I’d like to see more MMO cosplay in the future. .... The majority of cosplay is still mostly focused on anime, comic book, TV, and movie characters, but I’m looking forward to more video games characters (especially MMO characters) becoming more prominent.”" they should check Firefall's  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBixp-rcao4

And for the closing "Will you be tuning in to watch the new docu-series on August 13th?" I'm not a big fan since they turned into SyFy, so I was unaware of this docu, thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to check it out.
