I believe lightning can be seen in 14 as lightning is in final fantasy 13 not that distant of a future/past/whatever.

This really isn't something all that new. Cecil from FFII (FFIV) made an appearance in The Secret of Evermore on snes. They've been doing crossovers like this for years.

Of course it is an ad.

And of course it makes sense. It's FF they do this cross over crap all the time. Theme's etc.

It's just what they do...since you know we saw Mysidia twice....Cid like everytime. Moogles since six, many named mog...christ I can go on and on for a full nerd rant.

Point is: That's what they do.

As for those talking about BLM etc...no that is not squares creation. The art may be however they certainly gave no personality to any of the 1-2 characters beyond :"you are this ".

Lightning is in fact one of the more iconic characters: She's the first real female protagonist. Sure we've had Rydia, Celes , so on... But she's the first real badass.

It took a ton for me to like the character myself.

As for the cast of ff7..christ...just christ.

Oh look they take the most personality deficient character in the ff universe short of Sephiroth and toss her into a game she has NO business being in whatsoever. IF you needed some kind of strong female lead you could of picked a far better character than her.

She just a stereotypical ice queen.

If you wanted a well rounded and balanced female protagonist then Celes would be the much better choice.

Lightning is the most iconic? I am sorry I just don't see it.  I even thought Fang had more depth to her than Lightning.  A character I would love to see is Cecil in FFXIV or even Kain.  I really don't think Lightning was popular at all in the states.

Sure the latest Final Fantasy games sold a ton. I am a long time fan boy I hated the last two games, but guess what I still bought them. And I will buy FFXV on the off chance that it is good. And I am certain I am not alone in that.  You can't say the main character is iconic just because they sold more copies. There are more gamers now than there used to be.

Just as long as that Vanille doesn't show up...

Really pushing for people to like her.

They want her to be the next Cloud of the series, but I'm not sure everyone wants her to be the next Cloud.

I'm not a huge fan of Cloud either, but at very least Cloud was a well-developed character (as were many of the FF7 cast).  Even in prior games (e.g., FF4-5) where there was a little less time spent on characters, they showed more than one side and emotion.

I don't hate Lightning: I just think we've seen a total of about 10 minutes of her outside of battle, and 9 of those minutes she was angry (many of her cutscenes, especially in XIII-2, she was still fighting).  This is not a well-developed character.  She's cool, no question.  Badass fighter.  But that's certainly not deserving of "iconic", at least yet.  I hope this changes after XIII-3.

The only thing that has really made me cringe over the years is Square's cheapness when comes to giving players anything.

They do come up with some or cute little rewards that have nothing to with the game, but for actual game properties they are notoriously cheap.I could see something like give a cape but with +1 or 2 stat on it,something totally meaningless. In FFXI they would release thousands of items that nobody would use,imo a total waste of time.A cool looking cape or gear that has crap stats will have nobody wearing it aside from going afk.

The figurines will be cool to put in a house, but i prefer items i can use in game.Expect the stats or whatever you get to mimic Lightning for completing the whole ordeal to be very weak when comes to stats.

Me personally i was never a big Lightning fan, when i think of FF i think Yunalesca and Jecht  ,Cloud.

They have already added a lot of former FF ideas,so i expect a lot more.

I expect Cait Sith will show at some point and i also expect them to create an alternate universe as well or a past/future idea, maybe that is how Lightning shows up,through a time portal.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Lightning was probably the most popular character in FF XIII so I can see why she will be back here.

In XIII ... maybe, though I'd use Fang as a main any day.  Sazh and Lightning second and third, because the other options are Snow and Hope(less) and Vanille.  Worst character lineup ever.  At least Sazh has some depth.

In 13-2 at least Serah (whose VA is Laura Bailey which makes her an immediate win) and the other guy (whose name I can't be bothered to look up) have some backstory and character development.

I still say a One Winged Angel raid would be epic! That said, a whole FFVII based MMO would be pretty cool...I wanna have my own little shack in the slums.

Celes was so unbalanced she "fell" of a cliff!

Whoa people are seriously bitching over free content wow. It's optional content that nobody has to do if they don't want to. We don't know what the story for Lightning being in Eorzea but we will find out and I for one plan to find out why and not get upset over cross game characters entering an MMO for a limited time.

Argh .. "FF7 Online" set post-Advent-Children would be effing awesome and probably make Square like a zillion dollars.  Couple that with a remake of FF7 on the PS4 and a full Dissidia-like battle system.

Clearly Square does not want to make money or stupid popular games. ;)

If you notice from Lightning returns she has a lot of skins . She has Yuni's robes , she will get a mi'qote skin from XIV . And as it looks her story she is actually every hero from all final fantasy's meaning Cloud was really lightning , Yuni was really Lightning , follow ? And what there doing (SE) is bringing all the stories together , Spoiler Alert !!! FFXIV:ARR has Biggs and Wedge in it from VII also . Watch the LR trailer and listen to the conversation and watch close you will see Lightning become all the past main chrs.

biggs and wedge was in final fantasy before 7, they were in 6 also at the beginning escorting Terra through narshe and died at the first boss fight.  The magitek armor trailer for XIV is about that. They appeared in Chrono Trigger too.  And square-enix said when final fantasy 13 came out that they designed after clouds personality and said that shes basically the female version of cloud.

I'm not sure which trailer you are referring to, but I didn't see any hints to support such a hypothesis, and that would be monumentally stupid if true.

    DLC costumes mean nothing.

Btw, Biggs and Wedge, like Cid, have appeared in multiple entries of the series in different incarnations.

I cared when I first heard about it, but upon thinking about it some more, I've decided I have no fucks to give. The storylines in Final Fantasy are absolutely wretched so I really don't care what they do with it. At one point, I was impacted by the stories. It was when I was going through puberty and could relate to the plight of the socially awkward, angsty, hormonally imbalanced main characters of the series.

Well that's a bit unfair...FFVI had a pretty good plot and large, varied cast of characters.

Edit- FF Tactics, though not a numbered entry in the series, was also excellent plotwise.

I agree. FFVI was before Cloud Strife and before SE decided they should make semi-interactive cutscenes instead of RPGs. To each his own.

Well, technically Tactics was after Cloud, and that was also excellent - but yes, I agree that they've been going downhill more recently.

FFXIV, from the impressions I got from the 1.0 story and what I saw in beta for ARR holds some promise. More importantly for an MMO perhaps, it does a decent job evoking and maintaining the classic FF atmosphere - which is why I think it worth being somewhat perturbed about this Lightning thing - but at the end of the day, I'll try my best to ignore it and go about enjoying the game.

Tactics and 12 was after 7 and both had a great story about politics and war.  9 was very old school so I enjoyed that for that reason and still had an interesting story. I always thought 10 was the worst.  Even though 7 had a troubled protagonists, at least he had a pretty good reason for it unlike actual emo people.  I mean you find out you have fake memories implanted by someone else and on top of that you were artificially made from alien dna, who wouldnt feel confused?  But 7s overall story was still pretty damn interesting when it comes to science fiction.  Alien, Artificial Soldiers, Ancient Race of People, Shinra Corporation, Lifestream and the planet being a living thing, I loved all that stuff about the story.

Pretty sure this means iconic in the sense that she's one of the many factors which mark the severe decline in quality for the Final Fantasy series.
  • asmadeousasmadeous Member Posts: 70

Think about this: "How will this affect me?"

If you were initially going to play the game, more than likely, you're STILL going to play the game. If this was enough to deter you from playing; that is too bad, have fun elsewhere. This is an optional event that is located off on the side, you would really have to go out of your way to get to.

This is a publicity stunt, Squeenix is a business after-all.

This is nothing out of the ordinary, go make lemonade.
