blah, it's bulky, likely to consume power like a mofo, technical issues might  a pita... I much prefer lounging on the sofa with a controller than standing n walking n what not.  Gaming is to be relaxing and not  strenous, have enough of that with work n riding.  I remember a police game in the arcades in the 90's where one can squat and take cover with movements, not all that trilled over the excess movements instead of just some regular controls.

Question is though how much would that contraption cost though?

sure its bulky, but no more then a relax chair or even a deluxe gaming chair many people have.  the power cost cant be much at all since it go no moving parts at all,its all touch sensitive based much like phones and draw tablets.

I would love to have one but will be out of my reach for a few years, the glasses cost quite a bit , the machine itself cost 399,- if you use kickstarter , probably up to 700 retail add the cost of a gaming rig (tho the device dont need the processing power)

The glasses are called "Oculus Rift" and the walking device I believe is named "Omni"

I just wonder how your eyes would feel if you played 4hours or more straight with it.

    Reminds me of nintendo.

I used a similar thing over 10 years ago at an Ultimate Electronics store and played Herectic. No joke. It's nothing special and honestly, it's really uncomfortable for long gaming sessions.

Ive used similar devices as well but if you read up on it and look up some reactive vids you will see this is the real deal. Plus it is actually cost effective.

you still need a PC or either of those consoles to hook up the rift to play the games

A lot of the design of the game figures into that. There's a team at CCP working on a game as a side project, and they recently put together a dev blog that includes some of the usability and comfort challenges they came across in their development of the game.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I play games to relax an unwind, this just seems silly to me. I don t think I would feel anymore immersed by that.

I read that and it seems amazing. I like in the minecraft vid how the guy is actually scared to jump off the cliff because he can actually feel himself falling. lol, ive seen vids with peeps falling down because they arent strapped in.

Having worked in the VR field for several years, having used many similar products, having demoed the Rift Oculus, knowing the specs and the specs of all its predecessors, knowing the market for VR tech especially from the consumers stand point... I can say with certainty this isn't really a product worth watching unless you are tech junky. It's a nice gimmick piece of tech but that's all it is.

If you want the real deal you have to go to a VR arcade. These VR visors and helmets fail to provide enough of an experience to warrant the bulk, hassle and price especially considering how little support they get from developers and yes that even includes the Oculus Rift (There are only 2 that currently support it, a handful confirmed that will eventually support it, and another handful that have plans to try and support it and even then none are AAA games). At a VR arcade or amusement park you get the real deal including the hydraulics, fans, etc. as well as games and peripherals that actually make use of the VR space.

It's a neat piece of tech and I do like some of what they've done, but at the end of the day it's going to be yet another piece of tech in the closet for most of those that buy it.

I wonder how the death of one of the oculus rift guys will effect the company.

I wouldn't call it a gimic product though. It may lack the technology to make it wildly accepted by consumers right now but it's still a good idea that can only get better.

This idea is like 30 years old. And there were working devices about 20 years ago. Like was said in some review: "To enjoy this to the full, you have to be rich, single, and ideally very lonely".

Can you imagine the oculus rift with a game like ArcheAge ? O.o

For this to be successful they it will need a lot of support from developers. Even CCP haven't made the jump after their little demo. Right now it's fun but a gimmick and nothing more. For something like this to be commercially viable, it needs to work with movies and TV and not just games and the current resolution will have to be better.

And guess what? A porn title is already in development for it. It's called Wicked Paradise. If I remember correctly, there are a number of people from very successful games working on this project.  People from COD and Mass Effect.

My brother did the crowd funding and got one a couple weeks ago and when I was back home visiting I got to try it out.

It was pretty fun to play around with and worked really well with the demo games (just running around different areas). And I can totally attest to having a different feeling while standing on the cliff and jumping off haha..

Its definitely a neat little toy but I had some problems with it. Like for one my eyes just wouldn't stop watering. No one else seemed to have this issue (my family or my GF) so maybe I just have sensitive eyes. We did all pretty much had to run to the toilet to empty our stomacs after about 20 minutes of use. The motion sickness I got from it was unreal. I hear the more you use it the more you get used to that however.

Otherwise I thought it worked really well, and I didn't mind the lower res although I am sure higher = better. I didn't find it bulky or anything. I wouldn't get it right now, but I'd love to roam many MMORPGs with this thing even if I wasn't nessecarily playing the game but I think you would get a totally new appreciation for the worlds created.
