Lemme just say I was skeptical if I would ever see any profit from the game.

I invested $300 in EU, played it casually off and on over three years and when I cashed out my account I made $800 on my investment for a total of $1100.

Even after I choose to cash out my account and started the procedure I was still doubtful they would send me the money, but the very next day the full $1100 was in my bank account.

Honestly EU is kinda like the stock market, if you do your research and home work on what to spend your money on, you can actually turn a much better return than the stock market with much less risk.

If this is a bad as a lot of people think it is, why is it still around after 12 years (yeah it has been around longer then the 10 years it has be post Beta). I have said it before and will say it again, this is NOT a game for 13 year old kids that think they can become uber the same way they became uber in WoW or any other MMO out there. This game is much more like Real Life then other games, meaning you need to be smart and play smart.

I think that most people complaining about this game are just not smart enough to play the game, or at least don't use their brains to play the game and just put in lots of money in the hope to make money, which is not that way it works.

There are way to play this game for little or even no money at all, but that requires a different kind of playing as most people are used too.

This game has held me for over 5 years now playing daily with no breaks.

I dont put alot in, and I dont take alot out. (just one withdrawl of $3300 a few years ago when i had a lucky hit)

The game is free to play, and if you don't have the maturity to do your research on what you invest into the game, then losses can be catastrophic. You can only blame yourself though, it is a hard game, and that is why it holds the loyalty and interest of its fans for so long.

"When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things."

Entropia Universe is a game for mature players, who understand risks, and can take responsibility for their own actions. I love this game with its opertunities, risks, addrenaline, and frustrations.

Without those things Entropia would not be the great game that it is.

If you are looking for a challenge, looking for a game that is difficult, where you have to study your every move, where your success has real meaning, where your progression is measured in years, and where your budgeted expenses can be paid back if you ever decide to quit the game, then I would highly recomend Entropia.

If you are looking for a quick game that you can rush to max lvl in 2 days and grow boored of in a week, where children and childish behavior are prevelant, then I would highly recomend avoiding Entropia.

Good luck and have fun, I am :D

I really like Entropia. I've been playing since November 2007. I don't put a lot of money into it but still have a lot of fun.

So you made 800 over three years and it is not like in the stock market, you have to actively do something over those three years to make that money. Now if you had fun doing that then great, but if it was like work and you did it over three years, that is one bad payout.

So the big question, for me, is if the game is any good.

Is the GFX and aesthetics any good?

    Is the combat any fun?

Is there a purpose to PvP?

What is the end game? Is there an endgame? If not, what do you do, that is fun, when you have played for a few months?

I have to admit I'm a bit intrigued by this game. I read above about the rewards, but didn't see anything about the risks. Could someone enlighten me as to what these risks are?

Always hear how Entropia is the only game you can make money on and people throwing around dollar signs. What I remember was trying it out a while back and doing something called collecting sweat for an hour. Did some research and found you have to put money into the game to make it, like a casino. I logged and never went back.

Another interesting thing to note is that every EU thread is defended by the same three posters who will regularly point out they are making bank and that people who aren't making money just aren't smart enough or have some other defect preventing them from enjoying it.

Why has it survived for 12 years? For the same reason Amway has survived 50+.

I have started playing MMORPG since UO 2years then moved to AO 2years then WoW 7yaers.

since WoW got repetive and boring, I moved to EU 2year and half ago and I'm still playing it and found the joy that I couldnt find in any other games. I haven't even looked at other games since I have started a life in the universe.

to me, EU is the only game that worth to play, and I would say it's the best game I have ever played however I should admit that it has its own flaw. and yes, it has a system similar to online-casinos to make its profit.

it is certainly not a game for who dont spend time and try to understand the nature of it, and have no patience to be playing for literally years to come.

I believe I'll be playing EU for my life.

it sounds too unfair to criticise EU just because the taste of the game doesn't fit to you, and no one is forcing you to play it if u dont like it.

I'm sure EU will be around for another decade, and I will be enjoying it every bit of it.

oh, and forget making money in EU unless u are willing to spend years to fully understand the universe, and then spend a fortune as an fore-investment.

if u can make money in EZ mode, no one gonna be working in real.

    get some common sense.

end game ? puhleeez, it's a sandbox game, even asking for such contents is laughable. go play some theme park games.

"why play entropia casino?" ??? go to any land-casino and ask around ppl why they are there playing and spending,

    such a dumb question.

Its not a bad game at all and nothing like the OP makes out..

I stuck to it like it was a paid game with a sub. .so fist month i popped $30 into then $15 for every other month.

I enjoyed the game and did not feel the need to put mroe in.. of course i could have if i wanted to but still there was no need and at the end of the day i was having fun..

Game also looks awesome running Cryengine 2.

The combat is not bad, its not tab target.. dont expect anything ground braking tho.

Not really done much PVP so cant comment on that.

Also dont think there is any real end game as such you just play and have fun.

Also i just want to point out that I did not make any money. That is not why I played the game, I played ot have fun and thats what i had.  Saying that I never made any money playing any of the numerous MMORPGS I have played over the years.

  • To be honest when I first started EU in 2010 I was quick to put it down due to not wanting to deposit in a game that i had downloaded on a whim.

I went back to the game a year later and found that I really enjoyed the truly MASSIVE size of the world and the sense of adventure and danger in it.

I totally understand peoples issues at first glance about the game, I had them too. But I can tell you that not only have I put less money into this game than 70% of other so called free to play MMOs I've chewed threw in the last 5 years but I've had more fun doing it. On top of that in these other FTP games there's no chance of me making a return on my investment; unless I want to sell the accounts, even then it's only a fraction of what I've put into them.

I'll list a couple reasons I've stuck with the game.

    1. The community is the best I've ever played with except for maybe EQ1.

    2. Though I've not hit any huge jackpots I've still come out on top simply working the auction house and playing smart.

    3. As mentioned before EU has the biggest game world I've ever seen with multiple planets. Even if you play for years it's doubtful you'll be able to cover all of it.

    4. The depth of this game is mind boggling, it really rivals games such as EVE online in it's complexity.

    5. Though skilling up is a very slow process I'm left with a huge sense of satisfaction after a skill goal has been reached.

    6. The game is super challenging which is refreshing, nothing is handed to you.

A common misconception is that EU works like a (as the OP puts it) casino. With the right amount of research you will get a return very close to what you put in. So even though you might have only deposited 20 bucks you can ride that twenty for a long time, and the more you learn about the game the longer your money will last you. However if you're foolish and bet it all on a bad investment. (for example, using a weapon to high for you, or drop all your mining probes within 100 yards of each other etc.) You will feel the peds burning in your pocket.

The game gets better all the time and here's hoping some more people give it a real shot.

The developer of the game makes their money by taking a small (?) cut of the money "deposited" by players.

So, in theory, you could play almost for free. In practice of course, it's nowhere close to that for the average player.

One of the biggest unofficial drawcards to get people into the game is the fact that you can hit "big score" payouts whilst doing some activities. Of course, the money for those "big scores" comes from other players who did not spend their cash wisely. If everyone did their homework and played the game "correctly", that would mean the end of the big payouts. Which would most likely be the end of the game as well.

Every penny of profit you make in Entropia is earned at the expense of some other player or group of players. You can only win something that somebody else has lost. The funding model for the game is no different than any other casino where the House takes a cut and the balance is used as prize money.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of EU's funding comes from new players that start, deposit money, play for while, deposit some more and then give up because they lose their nerve. They take no money out when they leave, so the money they spent goes into the jackpot that is used for the high-rollers' big payouts...

Mind numbing boredom was the big risk for me.  I admit  I know entropia is not really a free game but I tried the cheap ass route. Sweat grinding for a week to buy ammo so I can Join a hunt party for a day.  After a couple weeks I hvd enough.

can't disagree with what your saying, it's not an mmo for everybody. But EU is as much as a casino as you want it to be, its your choice.

It can be played as a "normal" subcription based mmo, with a chance of getting your money back. Ive played many f2p mmo's in the past. Even now im playing swtor as a f2per, but are these games any better? aren't these games living on small group of players who invest heavily into it, WITHOUT any chance of getting it back?

the reason why I play? just for the entertainment i get out of it, like a normal mmo.

you have to agree it's one of the most immersive mmo's, for me it worth the 50$/month I invest into it.

I haven't played the game in years and have ZERO investment in if any of you want to try it out or not.

Someone asked a question and I stated 100% factual answer based solely on my own experiences with the game and parent company.

In reading other responses I will add that some of what is posted in this thread do not seem consistent with the game I played but it has been many years as I stated.

I will say the game is well past the stage where you could come in for no money and eventually come out as a millionaire.

However you could go in as a millionaire, and come out as a muli-millionaire.  Takes money to make money.

I personally am a big fan of the game, because the game itself is designed to weed out the trolls. It takes their money, or eats up their time in a way that does not affect the rest of the community (in fact it re-distributes the their assets to everyone else). This mechanic helps to create a large community that is positive about the game, and that sticks around for the right reason.... fun.

MMO's are a form of entertainment. I have allways appreciated how well designed this game is to provide entertainment, while also removing those that would deter this. There is always an element that feeds off of the misery of others, and this game has mechanics that make this type of behavior costly, and unrewarding.

Having said all of this... I think it explains why the OP chose to troll with this post... and how well the game punishes these types of players.

Why play Entropia?  Easy, because people are addicted to gambling.

What about the plenty of people playing the game who don't fall under that category, yet still enjoy it? Some of whom have shared their experiences right here in these forums, and elsewhere?

I guess you're completely ignoring them, eh?

Making broad generalizations is never a good idea, especially when numerous people have already proven to be exceptions to them.

It's gambling if you treat it like gambling.

It's a game if you treat it like a game.

Well... to respond to the OP...

    Entropia is NOT a casino.

But it is a game which requires that you use some of that grey mass you have in your skull.

I play on a monthly budget which is below the subscription of "regular" MMORPGs. This budget is based on what I feel comfortable spending on entertainment.

And if I am away for a while, for whatever reason, I don't pay a dime (unlike the others).

I played my first 6 months on F2P. Then I had 10 bucks to spend, and the world welcomed me into its arms :)

It's somewhat silly to just join a game and assume you will get free money within minutes. And I confess..that IS what made me join. I read a review about getting cash for sweating, and I joined. And yes, I did get bored quite quickly. But then I discovered two things: (1) the fun of exploration, and (2) the people. That's what kept me in. Many others run away screaming about the game being a scam (those many reviews you read), but in all honesty, it is not the game which is wrong, it is the perception of people which is somewhat misguided. They join with unrealistic expectations, and thus are bound to be dissappointed.

Does it work like that IRL, Logos 1326? Or do you need money in real life too, in order to make money? If you are going to sign up for the game to get rich, please...save yourself the frustration and the electricity needed to download the game, because it's entertainment and there are people working on creating it. These people need to eat too ;)

I have at some point, somehow, changed my expectation, and began to understand what Entropia really is about. I play differently now, and I am having a great time.

Really, that's what it is: entertainment, and quite good entertainment too! Because the real-cash element really ads an extra layer to the game.

Just like a small prize in a running contest makes you run just a little faster.

Am I making money? No. Am I spending money? Yes. Am I having a good time? Hell yeah :)

Entropia is actually a beautiful game. However, the learning curve is very high. Have played many different games since the early 2000's but still log into Entropia often. Of all the games I have played, Entropia and Dark Fall Online are my 2 most favorite. Whether it is full loot PVP (DFO) or real cash economy (Entropia), both have provided an exciting experience. In both cases, the journey supersedes the results.

Entropia=abandon ship, don't look behind, don't wait for the pirates to make you walk the plank, just jump and keep swimming until you reach shore, hopefully not EU shores.
Once you reach shore, tell no one of EU existence ,tell them you were simply out for a morning swim.
When telling your kids bedtime stories never mention EU,burn those clothes and any remaining remnants.
If ever you walk the lonely paths and come to a fork and a sign reads EU WEST,go EAST and start running as fast as you can.
