I never played HoN but you can't really go wrong with LoL if you want to try one. It's very fair in it's free model and somewhat noob friendly.

Smite is also worth a shot. I kind of got bored with MOBAS but it's like LoL but from a different point of view ( it's more 3d than iso )

actually i have smite, and play occasionally, but its kinda different as it plays more action orientated

I would go LoL personally. Also, wrong forum, Moba's are not MMO's. There is a general gaming forum that MOBA's fall under as they are not massively multiplayer (10 people).

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

I wouldn't recommend HoN. If you want to play the traditional style dota, then DotA2 is up and running and is very good. They'll get the muting and such sorted in time, between now and then though you'll have plenty to learn.

LoL focuses on a different aspect of the moba experience.

Now at some point you'll hear that dota is more hardcore and takes more skill. This is not true, each game has it's own skillset. Dota is more about the details of the game, meaning you have to pay attention to many little things like timing, last hits, builds that compliment your hero & group, when and where to use what skill. It's a very technical game.

Where LoL shines over Dota (and by a very large margin) is that Riot has put hero vs hero interaction as the high point. It shares many of the technical aspects as Dota, but you aren't punished as severely when you miss a single tiny moment. However, heros are more role oriented and fights are more important and encompass a wide range of player skill.

Abilities in Dota are not really spammable, and snowballing is very extreme in dota. LoL actually wants you use the abilities often. A team battle in dota happens in a few seconds, a LoL battle can go back and forth, people can recover and have time to support teammates target switch, stun people and so on.

They're both fun games though, you won't go wrong with either one imo.

*edit because I forgot to mention the Bot matches. LoL has a good range of bot AI, the easy is very easy and helps easy players into the game. Intermediate poses enough of a challenge that you can learn some decent tactics while still having fun.

Dota has horrible AI, easy bots are basically morons. And the hard bots give you absolutely zero room for error - and hard mode bots are significantly more difficult than playing against real people. I'm not joking, you can play against an organized team on ventrilo and it will be more fun and easier than playing against hard bots in dota.

I'm a bit confused about this.  What trouble or money?  The game is in "open" beta now, so its just free with steam, don't even need a key (which were also free).  And money?  All the heroes are unlocked, don't know why money would be an issue.

I really got into MOBAs with smite, which means you having played that is already your gateway into the genre.  Try Dota, LoL and HoN.  play 10 hours of each and see which is to your liking, no need to constrain yourself to just one.

Played DotA for many years, and switched to HoN when it became F2P. I also played a little LoL, and some other more rare games in the genre, i don't even remember their names.

If you want a rewarding game, in which skill really counts, then i suggest HoN. There are so many factors to make your game improve, that it will take years for you to master.

Sadly, this is too a factor that drives away many players, as the learning curve can be pretty frustrating. It depends a lot in your playing style.

LoL, on the other hand, is more noob friendly and "relaxed", in a way - in HoN you must be on your toes at all times, it's 15-60 minutes of gaming-adrenaline.

DOTA2 is like the original DotA but with the cool stuff that made HoN popular - mmr, shop, etc. Personally, i didn't like it, because after many years of HoN, DotA feels EXTREMELY slow, it's like playing underwater. The game i think it's pretty decent though, can't comment much on this. I do know that the latest heroes in the original DotA were terribad. :3

Again, depends a lot in your playing style tbh. I prefer HoN without a doubt, currently in 1830mmr, in the latin american server, and it's very fun.

Btw, i suggest to check Panzar, a hidden PvP game with a different approach, look this thread.

Can't go wrong with League of Legends. You don't need to buy anything but it's there if you want to. My only complaint which applies to all MOBA's is that games can go pretty long sometimes. I've been stuck in a 2 hour game when I only wanted to play max an hour.

Like all online games with real players it can get competitive. Which basically means you'll get bitched out at some point, but take it with a grain of salt.

I love LoL but most of the community there is a bunch of elitist jerks who think they are better than everyone else. I've found Smite to be more bearable, has more match modes, and moves like an FPS. DoTA 2 just didn't do it for me and I don't know anything about the other game you're referring to.

    Dont play either. Get Smite.

Community is great, game is a lot of fun, and much more varied options for game modes so its easier to find a way of fitting in!

If you want an easy time where you won't be challenged to learn thousands of game mechanics go with SMITE or League of Legends.

If you think you can handle an advanced level of skill and challenge go with Heroes of Newerth or Dota 2.
