Hahaha, Rift is the best MMO out now? Rift is nothing but a flashy WoW clone like most Fantasy MMORPG's out now! Rift will decline in numbers drastically after WildStar Online, ESO and Everquest Next is released, all games that are NOT WOW CLONES. Rift has the typical point and click old and obsolete MMORPG combat style, even Guild Wars 2 went with this and GW2 I think is a pile of crap.
Look out for WildStar Online, Everquest Next and possibly ESO (if they ever remove restrictions on world pvp)
Stop wasting your time with flashy WoW clones. The only MMO out now that I find is worth playing is Everquest 1/2 which cannot be considered WoW clones because they came out before WoW. Everquest 1 has the largest game world of any MMO ever created and EQ2 is pretty large to, even though it has typical MMORPG gameplay I like the lore and the many races. World of Warcraft also might be worth playing instead of all the WoW clones, Planetside 2 is also a good one to play currently, at least it is different. Everything else is crap.

I'm attempting to go back to Rift because it does look like the content and game design is something that I enjoy but I'm having a horrible time with how bad the combat animations are for Two-Handed weapons. There's something really simplistic about it that makes me not like it and it looks bad while swinging. Hopefully I can get over it.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

i wont disagree with you. combat animations are not top notch. but the game in general is very well made and its a totally solid experience, so i can easily bypass this.
i indeed think after i saw f2p model and cash shop, that RIFT is the best choice in the market. maybe not the best game (that is up to every1 taste anyway) but the best option in general.
Rift the perfect example of what is wrong with this genre.
There is nothing even remotely original in this game. If you are bored with WoW, EQ2, Lotro,... you will be bored in RIFT during the first few hours. I do not see a single reason to leave your current game to play Rift, since there is no single feature in this game that would be in any way unique or special. Everything is a rehash. Rift is the ultimate average game in every aspect.

Well that's true for almost every new aged mmo released in the last few years. I made a new character in Rift, and I was kind of pissed. They dumbed the tutorial down so much, why even bother having it. I remember it being three times as difficult the first few characters I made before. But this is just crazy simple and a huge waste of time. I do hope they didn't do this to the entire game, as I am making a new character to get my feel for the game again, been months since I last played.

Being special and unique is overrated. What matters is that how well the game is made and is it fun for you to play? rest is just people hating something for hate sake.

If you had posted this even a week ago, I would have Laughed at you. Now, Ive went back and tried it after being gone for over 18months.. The game has changed A LOT. Having a blast and even though its F2P, I like the perks of having a Sub.
I'm very surprised how much it has changed - for the better - since launch. I really didn't like it back then, but I'm really having fun.
same feelings here. game has developed and improved a lot. its a whole new mmo experience. nice work TRION
Rift is a decent game. My issue is that there is no repeatability for the game. Once you play a character on either side, You are done. Everything else is just a repeat grind. The other issue is the 10 and 20 man raids dungeons are some of the worst out there. Playing Simon Says, in a dungeon? Really? What a waste of time.

Actually, it is imagination and originality which moves the genre forward, and everything else basically, including culture, technology, and the entire civilization. Unoriginality freezes the evolution. Rift is exactly that. Rift is stuck in history, it's stuck in the dark age of the MMORPG genre and should be regarded as a misstep. Instead, this is the prime example of what is wrong with the genre. Despite of everything, it was commercially successful and the time of its release, and that's why we're getting more and more rehashes of the same system.

^This. I am so tired of people using games that are not even out to bash current games. Who cares about those other mmos when they barely have release dates set? Its a never ending cycle. I remember people bashing Rift when it first came out saying that SWTOR and GW2 were going to cause Rift to fail in the first three months. Flash forward to 2013 and SWTOR is the failure on the list, and many found GW2 not to be what they were expecting. Obviously, Rift is doing something right.

Rift is a well made game and yes it is more of the same we have experinced in past with a nice twist of Rifts. I don't expect every MMO to be unique and special and neither it is Trion's responsibility to move the genre forward. They released a well made fun game, the design with which players are comfortable and can identify with. As a player who just wants to have a fun for couple of hours a day that is all matters.
Not that i do not appreciate companies who try to push genre forward but that doesn't mean i must point my nose towards the ceiling and look down upon every other MMO.
There is still place for games like Rift in MMO land scape and believe it or not but a lot of players enjoy it and feel more at home with MMOS like these.

If you've read me carefully, I have actually put the blame on the consumers and not TRION. Rift is just a reflection of what is wrong with the consumer base, accepting uninspired and banal mediocrity.
Alot of people take Rift as something that was supposed to be totally different from the standard formula. I never got that impression when I played Rift.
I saw it as a game that wanted to take many of the successes from WOW, EQ and make something in their own flavor. They succeeded in that, they refined many of the traditional MMO mechanics and tried to refined them not into something completely differnet but somehting equally as solid.
Rift was never meant to be a game changer..

Yep, after the fun is gone, everything turns into a boring grind. That's the problem with all MMO's, many will say. Well, Rift's problem is that the "fun" is short and the grind is horrible, absolutely horrible. Everyone having a lvl60 char for at least a few weeks knows what i'm talking about. On the other hand, their free to play model is extremely good, worth a try for those which did not try the game before.
Agree. I left this game 1.5 years ago and condemned it to hell but I was shocked at how much the game has changed and improved! Thank God they went F2P so more ppl can try this game and be shocked at how great it is!
Originally posted by Kuppa It's a good game but it feels way to generic for me. Could never fully get into it.
I tried to get back into the game last week, and I quit after ten minutes. Ye olde tab-targetting combat has quite literally become the death of fun to me.

For me, I prefer a well done tab targeting system than a incomplete aiming system a la TERA or Neverwinter. Aiming when you don't need to be precise is the dumbest thing ever. Its like playing a FPS with insanely huge hitboxes, not more fun and not harder to do.
And if you read what i wrote you would know that Rift is anything but mediocre.
If you don't like the word mediocre, perhaps use average or pedestrian instead.
Keeping the action combat discussion away, for tab target Rift's combat is just average. All the complexity is in picking your spec, but the actual spec itself lacks any real depth when compared to EQ2, LOTRO, and, yes, WoW. The class building brings it up to a C.
The game world is also the worst out of the 4 by far, and dont use the 'established IP' excuse, it didnt hurt EQ1 at all. You have a free run at creating a fantasy world and all you put in it are elves, humans, shitty dwarves and blue half giants? Game world gets a D.
To be fair, its better than SWTOR in those categories
Crafting? Bad. While its a little deeper than WoW it doesnt stand out at all. EQ2 is the only one of the 5 that does, with SWTOR at least trying something different. D+.
Questing? Bad. All 5 games have generic MMO quests. WoW has great presentation and variety though. EQ2 has heritage quest chains. LOTRO has an absolutely wonderful main storyline. SWTOR has a main storyline for each class that are mostly well done. Rift doesnt really have a strength at all (although the storytelling has improved since vanilla, its still behind the other 4) D.
Dungeons? they are good. but which of the 5 games doesnt have good dungeons. B
Raids? Pretty good here too, probably second to WoW but EQ2 is underrated here. B+
Housing? It gets an A- while EQ2 gets an A+, LOTRO gets a C- and the others get an F
Fluff? Right up there with WoW with EQ2 a little behind it A-.
PvP? Like 4 of the 5 titles, it isnt good. WoW at least has decent PvP in arena form, and the class mechanics give it by far the best battleground PvP of the games. its also the most fluid which helps. Rift may even be second best, but its still a C- at best.
Non-raiding endgame? None of the games really do this well. Rift has invasions which help it a little. It also has the chronicles, which get old fast and there isnt a lot of them. Late vanilla Rift was actually better than SL because it had Ember Island. Maybe Dendrome can raise the score, but the bad currency/rep grind nature of things weigh down the pluses some. C+
Averaging these out puts it a 2.4, or a C+. In other words, mediocre.

For me, I prefer a well done tab targeting system than a incomplete aiming system a la TERA or Neverwinter. Aiming when you don't need to be precise is the dumbest thing ever. Its like playing a FPS with insanely huge hitboxes, not more fun and not harder to do.
