RF Online: Interview Part II & Screens

Michael Rowland of Codemasters has sent along the second part of the Q&A we began last week exclusively on MMORPG.com. You can read part one here and then jump on to the conclusion here. To go with today's Q&A we also bring you two more exclusive screenshots.

image MMORPG.com: Your game certainly seems set up for a realm vs. realm experience. Is this an indication that there will be a PvP element in the game?

Michael Rowland: RvRvR is certainly a vital feature of the game and with 3 warring nations, a very interesting one. The key resource in RF Online is the mining area at the center of all 3 warring nations. Within this mine there are rare and valuable ores which can be processed into essential additions for weapons and armour. To gain control over this area, there are huge battles that occur every 8 hours and involve all races fighting it out for control. Group play is essential and guild play will come into its own within the game. I expect to see some great strategies being displayed over time.

PvP combat has a reward system within itself. By killing other race characters you will gain Contribution Points that will add to your overall ranking within the race. The top ranked players in any race have the opportunity to become Race Leaders, and sit on the Racial High Council. Privileges include being able to speak to the entire race through chat, coordinating attacks at the vital Core Mine Battles, being able to chat to other Race Leaders, forming allegiances with other races and having the ability to wear epic items.

All in all, the Player Versus Player element of the game will play a vital role in RF Online and will reach further as we update the game and add new content..

The only point of this article that I find disheartening is the Contribution point system. Contribution points award you with a spot on the Council, whis offers a large mix of bonuses associated to the title. I have a small reservation with an aspect of this process. Which is the Race Leader aspect. In my opinion this type of 'ladder' only helps those people who have the most time to play. Time logged into the game does not make a player a good leader, which is what RF Online is creating with this 'ladder'.

I fully support awarding players who are lucky enough to have the time to spend playing the games that we all love; I even envy them. But I just don't see them being justified in leading the rest of the game because of that luxury. The greatest leaders that I have followed throughout my gaming career have not been the people who never log out.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the whole theory here. But if I'm not then there has to be a better way. Even if the members of the council can elect ANY player to be the race leader. Not just those on the council. I would agree that the players who spend the most time in the game do have a better understanding of who the better players are in the world.

Honestly, this game just looks like Lineage 2 with a sci-fi setup... nothing original in that, and the engine is the absolute clone of L2's.

There are like 3 or 4 games being released with the same engine, with almost the same look.

L2 was L2, u can't  just do a clone with changing 2 or 3 things and think u can make a new game outta that. Replacing some spells by robots or a bow by a rifle won't change the game !

    You're a Hardcore Survivor!

You not only survived the zombie apocalypse, but did it with style! Your mastery of zombie knowledge, survival tactics, and weaponry is nearly unmatched. Congratulations, for you are hardcore!

Yea I was just about to say that... the game does sound like it's gona be a L2 all over again... went to the game website but the link to their classes wasn't up or not done.

From what I can tell you can only craft is you become a certain class right?  sounds like l2 artisan, which totally sucked because they did no damage in combat, have no taunt move so even their high hp etc were no use as a tank because anyone can outdamage thenand pull the hate.  I like the idea of massive battle and GM host events, however if you are just gona let one class craft it's gona be a pain.  And somewhere someone said all the character design are the same, is there a decent amount of variety when it come to character creation ?  Well I guess we'll get our answer soon enought when a few of us will get to go into beta :P  this game sounds like a fun pvp game which is something i been looking for but if it turn out to be like L2 I don't think i can get very excited.

Well, peoples looking at the graphics and thinking it's like L2? You ever played it yet? O_o
It isnt. It may look so at the first sight but it isnt. I played L2 a long time and i tested the phRFO OB and i can say it's different.
PvP system a lot better in RFO (most likely cuz i like it that way).

Btw, nice Review. All 2 parts and Zzeno, keep the female Cora pic's comming. ::::02::
    We <3 it.

Yes, the specialist is the craft class. But other then the artisan he/she doesnt suck at combat. You have the choice what you wanna use (ranged, close or force combat). You wont be better then the other "full" classes but you still doing good (better then any artisan ever can). Bellato Specialists for example can drive huge Mech's which deal ALOT of damage.
And no, char design is most likely the same (like L2). But it doesnt matter in that case. It isnt about looking unique. Your 1 race, you fight the other. There is no need for that.
However, peoples who like to look apart from others will still be happy i think. You can customize weapons tho (upgrading it gets it a glow effect). Like i said it's not about unique look and i definatly gonna play it when it goes P2P.

Lineage II and Rf certaintly set a standard for me in game play and style and also PvP but i think there should be other reason to PvP other than Rank.

Well, the game sure is worth a try, I think. From the information given, it seems that this will be tons of fun for the short term. What I'm wondering though is what features the devs plan to incoorporate in order to make the gaming experience gratifying for long term players. What have they put into RF online to keep people playing for months, or even years?

The PvP in RFO will keep you busy for a while. Other things will come by time like planetary war. It is planned for the future that you have (huge) spaceships and you can get other planets apart from Novus.

  • CrankehCrankeh Member Posts: 1

For the person that posted about PvPing for just contribution points.  There is also 1 major reason for PvP in RFO.  To control the largest recourse in the game, the Talic mines.  Which is essential to get the amount of ores needed to upgrade weapons and armour.

I'm sure there will be plenty to do for the long term players.  As of right now there is a level 50 cap on the game.  levels 1-30 are really quick 30-40 aren't that bad, but from what I hear 40-50 will take quite some time.  By the time anyone would hit that point there's going to be plenty implimented.  Guild wars for one.  They will pit 2 guilds against each other in a large arena type senario.  Also as was mentioned by greatwulf there is a great possibilty of RFO to expand onto other planets.

All the L2=RFO comparisons just don't fit here either.  You have to play the game and see it for yourself.  I'm sure RFO will do very well. image

Think of it this way.. you get too kill someone thats NOT NPC but someone with more A.I. then most online games. As for Linage 2.. thats 2d in 3d format as this is ALOT like Mechwarrior on Steroids..

Be content with games that are coming out, ppl do work hard to keep us MMORPG Freakz Happy..

lol, Yeah, this game has similarities to Lineage2. Graphics wise. However, the PvP is far different and better in my honest and humble opinion.
The PvP is open to all. However, you can not duel your own race. There is a problem with higher lvl Players camping outside lowbie areas, hence open season on nooblets. The GMs and Devs see no problem with this. There is a ranking in regards to PvP. If a higher lvl kills someone 10+ lvls lower then him or herself, then he is rewarded with little status. I think he would get 10pts for it. When Killing a player that is near you lvl, you get 300pts-600pts towards you ranking. Killing someone who is 5+ lvls of your toon would give you 1000-1500pts of status. And, should you be the one to fall, you would lose the amount which was gained by the vanquisher of your fallen body.

When you die in PvP, you only lose pts. No experience is lost, no item is lost, and no money is lost. The only catch is, you start off in your home town.
So, say a 40 jerky-boy is PKing lowbies and they get a group and get lucky, that Jerky would lose tons of status and end up on his home planet.
I'm not clear on the travel in this game, but from what I understand, it takes time to run/fly/travel to other planets.

This game, is more PvP then anything else. Atleast compared to any MMO's out currently.

Again, this is my knowledge of what I've read and understood. These are my opinions and I hope I shed some light on the PvP subject.

Lord not another Japanese mech clone game.......this genre just needs to die completely. Let me tell you something all mmorpg's are all almost the same in many aspects. Online games are becoming stagnant with nothing really that diverse and new about them.

The things you can always count on in these games are spawn camping, kill stealing, griefers and people using hacks to PvP, yeah sounds like something I want to dump my cash into, no thanks. This title will be no different from the rest of them.

Here I thought nobody knew everything about mmorpgs, and then I found you! Where have you been all
    my gaming life?

    Actually.
The game kind of encourages KSing, spawn camping and griefing. If you can stop your opposing races from leveling, in theory you're getting more of an edge in the core wars. Making you and your race's economy richer.
Each race has areas that the other races can't enter. It's in these areas you will most likely level 1-25 or even 1-30. So you'll be safe until you're more capable of defending yourself.
You don't lose xp if you're killed by another player.
And you can't be killed by members of your own race.
You might want to find out more about a game before you pass such harsh judgement on it.

I've had a growing interest in RF Online, but I am worried that the style of the game will be too similar to Lineage II.  I played L2 and enjoyed it for a while, but there was simply too much of a grind, with not enough diversity in things.

If the graphics of RFO are like L2's I won't complain, although I always like to see something new.  I do like the artwork in RFO alot.

It will come down to the gameplay and community in RFO that will influence my decision whether to buy this game or not.  Right now there is Dungeons and Dragons Online and RF Online, both of which I am interested in, but I will only be getting one of them.

RF Online has interesting races and factions.  The RvRvR seens like it can be fun, although I agree with Lord Drayco about the Contribution Point sytem.  All too often are mmorpgs rewarding the player who can spend the most amount of time in the game instead of other more important character/player qualities.  I would think the Faction leader should be someone with good strategies, voted on by the players, not some player who has all the time in the world to level up.  I just don't like the idea of being led by a powergamer that may not have the qualification to lead many players into battle.

Aside from that, I am still trying to find out more about the PvE portion of the game and how much we will be able to customize our characters.  I had a real problem with Lineage II's character customization.  I hope RFO will have more options.

I am realy hyped for this game as i know a few lucky peeps that are playing at mo, email me clips of battles ect, which you can surf the web and see.

only thing that has me upset is the fact that all pre orders of rf online comes with beta keys,so you can "qoute" play early jan.

well being its mid jan and the release of the game is supposedly mid feb it will not leave much time for the pre order beta testers to get much of a tast for the game before it goes live.

infact reading there forums at the moment, there are a lot of disgruntled people lead to belive by wording that buying a pre order with a beta key means you can play soon.

    when in fact you carnt.

so dont pre buy on bases of this beta key ect, untill they get there account section up and running (when that is there is no idea)!!

plus there is no word on when they are sorting out pre order beta out for us all.concidering they have gone over there original date to let us pre order fans in.

    any new news on this?

hmm, i for one am rather majorly psyched about it, if only for the idea of true diversity between the warring races. However it is a FACT that ppl will continue to grief... oh well its an mmorpg, you find griefers from age 5-95 (ive seen a few old mmorpg fans... which makes me smile). What really has me worried is finding time... i heard that grinding is not going to be a problem... but it does worry me. Also, i hope fighting is a bit more bloody or mean than wow... guess not by screenshots, but oh well.

This game seems, looks and sounds very promising. The only thing im conserned about is the pricing. Will this game be like Guild Wars a one off payment or is a pay to play? Also is it available from the shops or will it have to be downloaded off the website? Other than that i cant wait for this game to come out it looks amazing! Keep up the good work guys.imageimageimageimageimageimage
