Yeah Torchlight 1 and 2 are made by former fate, diablo and diablo 2 devs. The 3 leads are the lead guy from fate and the schaefer brothers who worked on diablo 1 and were the leads on diablo 2. They also have the music guy from diablo 1 & 2.

The long term play of d3 comes from grinding gear.

The long term play of tl2 comes from multiple characters and trying out lots of builds. (also it has some loot grind and it randomises the maps much much better than d3)

I don't get how you can say tl2 has boring classes when there's so much variety in how you can build them. With d3 your locked in a role, a monk is always a mdps, a demon hunter is always a rdps. Not so with tl2, there's loads of variety.

All 4 tl2 classes can be built
    As ranged or as melee
As tanky or as high dps
As standard / low mana attack based or as high mana power spell based
As solo heroes or as summoning / pet buff based swarmers
As mob pack specialist or boss specialist or somewhere inbetween
As physical or elemental damage orientated

There's huge variety. I run a dual wand toting group buffing bezerker a tanky / pbaoe respecced embermage and a cannon toting engineer.

There's also more involved in how you upgrade / distribute your 4 primary stats, in d3 no matter what build you only care about 2, if your a barbarian you always want just str and vit.

Diablo 3 has some things right, the combat is great with plenty of impact, but then so is tl2 (the impact thing is important I couldn't get into titan quest because of the lack of bodies flying around) it also has nice story and atmosphere, which is where it does beat tl2, on the feat playthrough.

But its hindered in 2 areas.
The itemisation due to wanting to encourage people onto the rmah. Now its better now a year latter, bit its still a bit underwhelming.
The speccing / progression system. Now I like some things like how your only allowed one power of a certain type out at a time. And I would like something like the runes in tl2 to temporarily tinker with builds in a limited way on the fly. But there's such a lack of variety in how you can spec your chars, you are truly locked into an archetype.

I admit Torchlight and Torchlight 2 are both well done games.  I'm in the camp that just does not find cartoony games appealing, so I do consider this a con.

I recently downloaded TL2 on a new computer and discovered all these great mods for the game. I downloaded Synergies II, which seems to be almost an entire game overhaul, and a mod for a respec potion and enhance textures, although it really doesnt look any different with this mod as far as I can tell.  Also, the Synergies Mod gives you a new character class, the necromancer, and two that are still in alpha. I tried the necromancer and just feels like any other character really. It doesnt feel that different to me.  After a few hours I just got bored since it is simply going somewhere and bashing countless monsters.  There is more story than the first one but more than almost nothing is not much.  Maybe I have to admit this genre is not for me.  I know people rave about Diablo 2 and Torchlight 2.  I always seem to get bored fairly quickly killing endless number of monsters.  If they could actually graft a meaningful story on to the game maybe it would help.

I don't want to discourage anyone from picking this up, however. If this is your type of game, I am sure you will love this.  It is cheap enough and offers tons of hours of gameplay.
