As a supporter of FFXI on the Xbox... I'd like to see more be brought over but I also am guilty of ignoring Defiance on the PS3 in favor of the PC beccause it's silly. I was debating buying FFXIV ARR on the PS3 but I won't be owning a PS3 once the PS4 comes out. Since it isn't backwards compatible that kinda screws that.
Defiance IMO was a epic failure but FFXI and FFXIV should thrive on the new systems. I hope to see more MMORPG games introduced over the next few years.
I very doub that even these nex gen consoles can handle massive mmo worlds with thousends of players.
PC is still superior to consoles if it comes to power and flexabillity.
On smaller scale maybe but if game handles thousends of players no.
One huge map noway.
Future will tell offcorse.
the new consoles got 8 core cpu, 8 gig ram (PS4 has GDDR5), mid to high amd graphics card (PS4 is superior to Xbox One), DX11, x86 architecture...and the PS4 touch pad on the dualshock 4 could give devs new ways to implament some gameplay features.
bungie is already Making Destiny which they said its a online persistent world only on PS4, they dont want to use the word mmo for some reason.
im pretty sure final fantasy a realm reborn will come out on PS4 since its on PS3
and with recent mmos having 8 skill bar systems like in wildstar, GW2, ES Online, and neverwinter which all could be played with gamepad (I play GW2 with PS3 gamepad)...I dont see any reason why devs wont start making mmos for consoles in next gen.
It can a does work just look at ffxi. Sure there are some problems later on in the games lifespan. Anyone who played ffxi knows all the woes of the ps2 supposedly holding the game back until the last expansion. Plus building a new gaming pc every few years gets super expesnive especially since I'll probably be buying at least one of th next gen consoles anyway.
I think the only barrier to MMORPGs on consoles have been the hoops developers have to go through to get them on the consoles, hops they have to jump through with every content update and patch. These hoops don't exist on PC which is why it's the premiere platform for the genre.
Now form the PS4 reveal it seems that Sony may have removed the hoops as well so we may wells see more MMOs on PS4,Xbox one on the other hand....well I haven't heard anything that says MS has changed it's attitude in that regard.
If next-gen consoles have proper KB + M support, yes. Defiance really suffers from being a half-assed console port and I hope the consolitis won't spread.

actually I could see a combination of gamepad and a mobile device like a smart phone or tablet working very well with an MMORPG if designed properly.

or just make it exclusive for the console like Destiny
I said No. Consoles are far too inferior to PC's. Consoles need the devs to work through a complicated system of portable requirements that wont help them to give us the games we want... otherwise we should tell devs we wish more sandbox.... and believe... sandbox is not going to do well in consoles.
Destiny isn't an MMO, as Bungie have clearly stated. As for MMO's in general going to consoles, no, just NO! We've already seen the result with Defiance, which is an achievement on consoles but sadly lacking in several areas as a PC MMO.
If you want your future MMO's to be dumbed down console ports that have half of the features that make them MMO's missing, then you will only have yourselves to blame if you allow this to happen.
If you want your MMO's to all look the same with no graphical improvements for the next 10 years by allowing them to move to consoles, you'll only have yourselves to blame.
If you want the social aspect of MMO's to die off and to be inundated with window lickers, then sure, allow the genre to move to consoles.
Seriously, if you want to keep the integrity of the genre in tact then boycott any attempts to move it to consoles. The only reason for MMO's to move to consoles is to allow the devs to push out cheap, shallow crap that will sell to a bigger market. It won't be about a great gaming experience any more, just about the big bucks.
Great thing to happen for the devs, absolute worst thing that could happen for the MMO fan.
The new consoles definitelly have the power to handle massive persistent mmos. However, i voted No only because all i want is big scale warfare on the new consoles. 100+ vs 100+ multi mode matches in call of duty and battlefield (by multi mode i mean different objectives in the same match. Im sick of all these 4v4, 8v8, 12v12 shooters

Destiny is coming out for most platforms PS3, 360, Xbox1, PS4, and PC sorry Wii U. Bungie is just giving their full support to Sony and the Playstation 4.

It's a massively multiplayer online fps with a persistent world.
If it looks like a chicken, clucks like a chicken, and tastes like a chicken, it's a chicken.
An aggressive MMO console strategy would be to try to take over the entire OS of the console - make the MMO itself the platform on which other games run.
A passive MMO console strategy would be to see your database as the world and instead of one monolithic client, extend minigames out onto every available platform - PCs, mobile, consoles, anything connected to a network. (the DUST approach)

Are we so sure it's Massively multi-player? By Massively I mean literally hundreds interacting in-game. Not a city hub with 4 man instances like Vindictus or these other quasi-MMO's. Not some 24v24 maps but hundreds of players all in the same game space.
And if it walks, clucks and tastes so much like chicken, then why aren't Bungie calling it chicken?
Lets look at their own game info page and some of the Features.
"Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay, including story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes combined with public and social activities."
No mention of Massively is there? Maybe that's why Bungie are calling it a Persistant Online Shooter and not an MMO.

guild wars was the same and it is considered an mmo by many people and we dont know yet if destiny will have hub like gw or be able to see others in the open world. But everything else smells like mmo...and besides there is still Final Fantasy A Realm Reborn which is a full mmorpg and thats even goin on the PS3 which is current gen console. And now even Blizzard is supporting the PS4 starting with Diablo and who knows they might even be making a mmo for PS4 maybe even Titan will be on PS4 too. And if game companies want numbers like WoW they just dont have that chance on just PC anymore they have to broaden the genre to consoles if they even want to get close to WoW numbers.

Don't argue with me about it, take it up with Bungie. They're the ones refusing to call it an MMO. And just because it's multiplayer doesn't mean MMO. So it doesn't "smell like an MMO" until we get a lot more details other than "multiplayer modes".
Definitions of what constitutes an MMO aside, the question is if we're in favour of MMO's going to consoles. Rightly or wrongly game companies are going to push for this for one simple reason. There's more consoles out there and it's a much bigger market. You said it perfectly, if they want WoW numbers. But that's all it's about these days, fucking numbers. There are very few studios these days pushing out games to be proud of, it's just the next iteration of "how to get more cash", especially on consoles. It 's the annual regurgitation of the same old titles with minor changes. You want to subject yourself to that mentality? No, thanks.
I still stand by my initial statement that a push to consoles will be a disaster for MMO's. Not in terms of profitability or sales but in terms of complexity, subtlety, and socially. It will also further stagnate the advancement in graphics technology we've seen since FPS games moved primarily to consoles.
I've seen the result of MMO's made for consoles and if the trend continues then I won't be playing them for much longer. Quite frankly, making an MMO on a console is akin to building a lighthouse in a desert, it's very bright, but fuck all use to anyone.

What are you dreaming? Currently consoles are already good enough for MMOs, like DCUO. It plays the same as the PC version. Dust 514 is PS3 only.
There is a marketing issue of whether the audience is there, but there is no technological problem.
