The website says the game will be played in the area of the four corners/ northern AZ grandcanyon/ hoover dam.
How accurate to RL will the in game world be, and thus will it be all desert, or will there be hidden forest velleys and what not?
For my part i wish for as accurate as possible based on USGS data... but that's prolly too much to ask. But will there be remnants of current highways/cities/canals/powerlines etc. Or will it be all empty?

I surely hope that there will be ruins of cities from before the catastrophy and other remnants..:)
Lets hope..:)
I hope so as well. I hope there is more geographic variation than just what we would expect to find in the mentioned area as well. Although, not one of us would probably be able to tell the difference. The only notable thing would be ruins of cities. I would definitely miss that kind of element in a post apocolyptic world too.
Maybe they will continue to expand the world as it matures. Would be kind of fun to explore the ruins of something similiar to New York City and the Statue of Liberty. Definitely a dream there, but it would absolutely drive home the desired setting. That reminds me of that scene from the original Planet of The Apes when Charlton Heston is running along that beach and he sees the toppled remains of the Statue of Liberty. Definitely an eye-opener hehe
I see the starting area as a great place for some future content updates to add fantastic new places to explore/colonize/conquer. There's the gian meteor crater in eastern Arizona, and who wouldn't want to expand a little westward and see how Las Vegas fared?
Then it's just a quick jaunt northwest to Area 51 And the area between Nevada and New Mexico is littlered with nuclear test sites, nuclear waste repositories and other goodies...
Yeah, Las Vegas would definitely be a mind blower. Heh, if they include that area, we could have a player-run Burning Man Festival in the in-game equivalent of the Black Rock Desert. It'd be a cool way to show off what the vehicle and personal customization can really do.

Ahhhh, Burning Man! Just found out about this recently, and it seems so very interesting. Not sure if I'll go anytime soon, but having a similar gather in-game would be pretty neat
I don't really care if they have terrain accurate to the actual United States, as long as there is a good variety of zones to explore. An entire abandoned city would be so fun to explore... not just an abandoned village, but a full scale city. We'll just have to see what Icarus has in store for us

Last time I was there, there was a guy who had mounted a full amusement park size merry-go-round on the back of an 18-wheeler. Oh man.

I think that it needs to start with a little forest ect a little of each environment and then i hope it evolves into larger areas. if the devs start small and grow i dont mind but if they start big and leave it as is forever. then i get a little mad. If this game isnt set the year after the apocolyspe but some 10s of years later i would definatly like to see a ruined city and forest in the same area. Like buildings overgrown with vines. toppled skyscrapers with a tree growing out of an office building. and the like

Yeah, but realisticly speaking. I drove from Vegas to Chicago which is 1600 miles or so. In a game, I really don't want to spend the length of time equivelant to that driving across the endless wastes of the game being ganked by whatever might be out there.
I area in having areas / zones for the states, cities or hunting grounds. but if they put in New York and I happen to start in Vegas, I aint going to New York manually....lol

But that's the point. I don't know if you've seen Mad Max: The Road Warrior (if you haven't you should, considering your aparrent interest in this game ) but the main plotline involves an encampment of oil refiners trying to escape to another place to barter their refined goods.
With an instantaneous travel system like you're talking about, that kind of thing can't happen, and the game economy wouldn't work as well. Unless when you teleported, you left behind all your items and money. That might be kind of neat.

Yes, I know what you are talking about. Even nerdy DnD fans have seen Mad Max at some point! but my point is, if this is post APOC type of theme, there will be high radioactive areas, impassible terrains, etc to move around on. It is the nature of the type of theme you are looking at. and as you stated in Mad Max....there would have been hours and hours of you watching cars drive over desert before hitting those "refineries" and oil rigs. Instead of boring you with 45mins of driving, they pretty much cut to the chase and show you where they eventually drive to don't they? Thats all I am saying.
I am HOPING they will expand the game into cross contenant type areas, or places that advanced players can get to via shuttle or subway system of some kind. but at the same time, I do think they should have an entire open region of playing space to run around in. Just not something so large as the entire counry.
What if they went so far eventually to have an expansion of Paris or berlin added to look around and adventure in? Just food for thought. I am not even sure if they are doing "real life" type of environment. But if they did, that is just my 2cents.

That's why, as I said in my vehicle physics thread, there should be unrealistic GTA-style physics. With realistic physics, it WOULD be a 45 minute boring drive through the desert. With UNrealistic, every sand dune you pass is a potential ramp.
And then there would also be roadblocks along the way to deal with. There would be no "Alright, let's just drive.... HERE! *points to random spot on map*" You'll have to stop every few minutes to deal with hitchhikers, bandits, objects blocking the road, etc.
I hope you will, anyway. A blank open road would be pretty boring.

Well, i understand and agree with that to an extent. Problem for me is I want to feel like I am personally in the future, the wasteland is really outside of my window now, and I just happened across a Trans Am from 2000 that eats gas and burns rubber. I don't wanna have some wierd flying Mustang that ramps off of hills for 5 miles at a time.
An interresting point you bring up though, is directly from FALLOUT. Where you are looking at the contenant map over view, plot a course and you drive / walk there. As you hit random encounters, you are forced to stop and the "fighting screen" appears and you finish your battle or rot where you stand.
Problem is though, there is no way to really do that effectively in a MMORPG because in FallOut, the "time goes with your travel", where as in a MMORPG just because I plot a course from Utah to Illinois, doesn't mean the 'time clock" will effect you any.
I dunno, we shall see what happens. But I do totally understand where you are coming from.

I think the same ideas could work, just instead of running into random encounterss, you hit a trigger based area around an npc or group of npcs, and it starts their scripts running in relation to your actions. And for the choice you could get of encountering or not encountering the event, you can always just drive off the side of the road and go around the npcs. (and hope they dont have a fast dune buggy )
