Haha - had to laugh at some of the posts here. " It's a scam ", "daoc sucked", " no pve I'm out because I want to play every aspect of the game".

Too funny. As to the question of whether or not people want to play a pvp only game... Anyone ever heard of a little game called League of Legends? What do you think that game is? Players versus other players lol.

LOL @ all the ignorant posters here, Kickstarter is a funding tool !!  If the game was almost done then there is no reason to use Kickstarter! haha

Why would anyone post here with negative BS, if you don't like the game or the philosophy behind it then why even bother posting?  It's obsurd to think that some of you would just blatently bash the kickstarter of a game that obviously lots of people are trying to promote.

    So...

If the game sucks, do I get my money back?

    No?  Thus...I will not pledge.

Do enlighten me how it's absurd for others to form opinions of their own? Last time I checked everyone is an indvidual and has their own ideas of what is good and what is not. Also a lot of people are posting negative feedback because some of us don't think it's ethical for MMORPG.com to continue to hype up a game that hasn't even started the development process yet.

I played DAoC for 5 years and for me to get strongly behind this it would have to at least have the same scope that DAoC had, minues the forced PVE ToA stuff.  Either way, I hope it funds.

    Currently playing:
    Rift
    Played:
SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot
    World of Warcraft, AoC

Personally I'm hoping they don't hit the number needed for kickstarter. A game that is not even made yet and they want people to fund it. What they need to do is get a working prototype first and get outside investors. Trust me if the game was worth investing in  they can easily get outside investors to back the game. Look at darkfall it created the game the way it wanted too and  it didn't have to go to kickstart to do it. I for one will not be pledging money to a game that hasn't even started to be made yet and I think it's foolish for people to do the same. You are basically playing lotto with a game that won't even come out the way you want it too.

I would give you a guest pass to SWOTR, but then I wouldn't be able to find a way to live with myself afterwards....

  • SmudgePudgeSmudgePudge Member CommonPosts: 78
@xion12121 I understand not wanting to fund a project like this but you are mistaken - there is outside funding for the project. $1 Million to be exact. Mark Jacobs has explained exactly why he using kickstarter. He's not sure there are enough people out there who want to play a pvp only mmo. So ks is actually serving two purposes - crowd funding and crowd validation. It's a super smart idea but they have a bunch of good ideas which is why me and 6,000 other people are getting on board.

He sounds like he doesn't even care about the game lol.

Lots of these kickstarters with famous credentials getting of the ground, but I dont see the player base swelling that much in the next few years. No mater how good your game is players are up to their eyeballs in MMO's.

Camelot unchained seems like it could be an interesting game for me but it's impossible to tell how the game will end up at this early stage.

I don't support kickstarter funding for games until developers start giving alot more to the fans who fund their games at such an early stage. Currently it's just a way for developers to shove the risk taking on their fans while giving out standard pre-order rewards and other in-game stuff that's basically free for the devs.

The rewards for backing are laughable compared to what an investor would demand if they would fund the game, come on devs you can do better than this.

    backing =/= investing.

if you want to chip in more money, feel free to become an investor and also take the relevant risks as well.

If i put in $110 and the main guy behind puts in 2 million, and our full kickstarter funds + his 2 million + his investors funds are lost.....   I don't feel i got scammed. I just feel it failed, next time you're at the casino and lose $$$ .,Did you get scammed? Probably! lol..

I am betting myself on sucess, as well as i am going to get the game for free, alpha access, the ability to give input, and the game concept is actually that of a game that i WANT to succeed. If anyone can try and copy DAOC RVR and fail at it, arenanet has done that with guild wars 2, i looked forward to guild wars 2 for years... and years... And guess what? I quit after 1 month because the RvR sucked.. or WvW as they called it. They screwed it up. I suspect the guy who invented 3 realm RvR might have a shot at not screwing it up, sure WAR lakes blew.. Who thought of that anyway mark ?

But i am giving him another shot.

    *sigh*

To those of you concerned about backing / investing.  Backing does not equivicate to investing.  Backing simply means you want rewards of a non-monitary value and are not assuming any financial ROI based risks.  That is not to say, we are not expecting a game -- and as such, expecting a game that we -- the players -- feel is one we want to play.  That said, Mark Jacobs has assured us that we will not only get to vote on how the game is made at certain points, but he will be having IT ( Internal Testing ) and the "founders" help decide the direction of the game.

He has, thus far, been more than willing to be a part of the community on the very base level and communicate with us on the same level he does his developers.  He is hiding nothing and his motives seem extremely strong.  I realize that there are those who dislike Mark Jacobs - but he is trying to demonstrate what a lot of these industry vets forget once they've reached a certain level at the top, humility and compassion for his fanbase.

    To the neysayers :

    - Subscription model : It is not dead.  It is not going anywhere - there is still plenty of room for this even if freemium or UGC ( user generated content ) is a big thing now and in the future.

    - Dark Age of Camelot - to whomever said DAoC was a bad game ... that's a very strong opinion and I would like to say - what game has done PvP combat in a high fantasy setting better since then?  WAR improved and also fell on its face.  GW2 ...fell on its face.  TOR - afterthought.  Rift - afterthought.  WoW - afterthought.  None of them have done good PvP - and mathematically - Tri-Faction is an extremely sound concept.  ( Anyone wonder why Matt Firor went with it on Elder Scrolls and actually flubbed up cannon just to do it?  It's because it works - and it was Mark Jacobs who coined the concept of Tri-Faction / Tri-Realm combat.  Have atleast a -litttttle- faith in him. )

    - Scam? - Please explain to me, in depth how you feel this is a scam.  It is a standard kickstarter compared to others.

    - Proof of concept? - There is one.  It's called Dark Age of Camelot.  Warhammer Online.  Those were pre-alpha proof of concepts - metaphorically speaking.  If you modify your thinking slightly and realize that he will be taking all the knowledge gained from those particular games and applying this to a game where he and the community at large has control over -- rather than a big giant gorilla sized corporation hulking over his shoulder, you'll see that there is plenty of working concept.  You'll also see that he is giving us proof of concept and showing their ability to make it happen slowly but surely even within the first week.  Look at their tech & art demoes.  Pretty cool stuff.

    ---------

I want to keep this atleast somewhat short - so I will sum it up w/ this : I backed this because I have memories that are irreplacable and Mark Jacobs, Matt Firor, Dave Rickey and a whole slew of other industry vets are the ones made it possible to have those wonderful memories of DAoC -- and then later Warhammer Online.

    * I also want to note this - The kickstarter is for 2M$.  He's already pledged 2M$ of his personal funding + secured 1M$ in financial backing from other resources.  That said, he will continue to have a Paypal available on their website to extend stretch goals and otherwise.  He will also be looking actively for more funding in the private "angel investor" sector most likely to help fund the game.  Something of this nature wont require more than 10-12M$ at the very most for a 2-3 year development cycle.

The business of video games is an interesting beast and the world of MMos is very unique in and of itself.   And yes, I know, there ARE a lot of Mmos out there.  It's extremely saturated -- and quite frankly, most of them suck.  I simply refuse to believe that with the passion and drive that we as a community have, that MMos like this can't work.

whats the deal with this, they havent announced anything that even remotely sounds like it would be a good game.  dont you think there are other games coming out that maybe yall could devote a little bit of time to instead of 5 interviews and colums a week on daoc ripoff number whatever (as if one daoc wasnt bad enough).

He sell an idea, and people buy it without even thinking about it.

CU developer is going to make a ton of cash selling an old game engine.

How much does it worth to actualy make a game with free game engine?

You -do- realize he's intending to make an engine, for the most part, from scratch right?  You're saying that he's using freeware is simply mis-informed and incorrect.   You are also insinuating that the people backing it are not thinking it through.  The initial pledges had a month to think on it.  The others pouring in did their due diligence.  Yes, some are blindly pledging, but--I am not. I did my research.  I know mark's history and I played daoc , war and numerous other mmos.  None compare to daoc or war experience wise.  That's why I am backing this.

Agreed.  The Tri realm RvR (DAoC) created such lasting memeories, that the demand from players to return to those days (in some form) has been pent up for YEARS!  That is why there is so much coverage.  I cannot wait for a revisit to Tri realm combat with new ideas and concepts!  Thanks for the coverage/interview
  • hardiconhardicon Member UncommonPosts: 335

well this is not mmorpg just covering another mmorpg.  there has been way more coverage for this game than any other game except maybe swtor.  I dont really care but was curious as to why a game that had no information on it warrants this much coverage this early.  I mean they have zero gameplay footage, they dont even have a game right now just thoughts put onto a legal pad and this game is getting more coverage than most.  not to mention that it is just a daoc clone and we know how well they have worked in the past, about as successful as wow clones.  I get that people liked daoc, but clone games fail, simple as that.

I think we know where the kickstarter money is going though, to pay mmorpg for column space.

  • Rainfall13Rainfall13 Member Posts: 7

@ Hardicon - This is not going to be a DAoC clone.  In fact, Mark Jacobs has said this will NOT be DAoC 2, nor a spiritual relative to it.  It will be similar, but it will be an entirely new and unique approach to it.

As far as where funding is going?  It's going directly into the game.

MMoRPG is covering it - because it's about damn time someone approaches an MMo without the same bland promises made every single time a new one comes out.  It's about time someone actually asks the community WHAT they want rather than stuffing another half-assed and  thoughtless PvE focussed w/ PvP half-assed afterthought type of experience.

That said though, I appreciate your concerns and curiosity about the matter.  I personally believe that, while they do not have an actual prototype to show off, they do, however, have a team that can create that prototype fairly quickly.  It's also encouraging that with just a pitch, no prototype - he's generated 1$M in private investor funding and is willing to put 2$M of his own personal cash, straight from pocket on the line.  You also have to realize, he's putting his reputation and career on the line by doing this kickstarter and taking this approach.  He's not doing this on a whim or without first thinking about it.  People like him do not make moves without pre-planning, and I highly doubt his team would back him if  they did not feel it was a decent enough concept.  Money is money - but no one wants their name tied to a bad game.  Remember that. :)
