[Column] General: Wargaming.net Goes Gas Powered

With Wargaming.net's buyout of Gas Powered Games, new questions arise about the viability of the US games market combined with foreign investment. See what we have to say in this week's Free Zone and then leave your thoughts in the comments.

These revolve around what the US industry is doing and even can do to stem the growing foreign tide. It's basically impossible to discuss this topic area without someone bringing up Titan. Blizzard's mystery project definitely casts a huge shadow. However, how realistic is it to project it attaining or even approaching the level of dominance World of Warcraft once had around the world? I sincerely doubt we'll ever see anything like that again.

I'm just curious but don't MMORTS games clamor to a niche group of players? It just seems that way to me...

I would love a new supreme comander RTS, sadly, too many developers seem like music's 'one hit wonders' now a days.

Great article but I believe American publishers and devs are getting weak, why? For the simple fact that a majority of them do not listen to what their consumer base wants and always try to replicate WoW we need new ideas, and over seas devs and publishers are doing just that. We have forgot what made mmos in general different than from your traditional single player RPGs , think back to EQ of 1999 , massive world with harsh death penalties and quest content that required a full group , and even had exploration . I still remember my epic journey with a friend of mine from qeynos to free port, passing through the various zones and stopping for a night at highpass hold, because everyone knew that going into kithicor at night was a no no ( one simply doesn't travel into kithicor at at , and lives to tell the tale ) lol. See what I mean? How many mmorpgs out NOW offer that experience? NONE, we need change and the only ones to do so will be over seas, that might spark interest back into the mmo genre in North America and get that purpose back. We don't need hundreds of millions of dollars to creat a rich fantasy world or what have you, we need talent with new ideas or this industry is in some serious danger!

Well it might just be Wargaming bought Gas Powered Games, to work on the integration of the 3 ip's they are currently working on. Wargaming is having a hard enough time trying to keep the Clan Wars part of World of Tanks running. Maybe GPG is the answer to thier problems.

Yeah they spread themselves pretty thin and world of warplans is about to lose big time to war thunder so hopfully GPG is being brought in to help make that a better game.

Wargaming isn't a cheap nickel and dime f2p company. I always felt I got good value for the money I spent in wot. It's good to see them growing.
