PSU

Now that I have my video card sorted I am having PSU issues.

It have a 550W OCZ Fatal1ty PSU  http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022

My PC powered off yesterday and I noticed that the PSU was pretty hot.  The fan was not spinning so I gave it a nudge and now it is going but making a horrible rattling sound.  I suppose I could let it run its course, , I actually think the fan may not have been running for months.  I was pushing some components pretty hard when it shut off.

I got this PSU a looong time ago and at at a good discount.

Am I looking at replacing it with the same type of thing or are there better PSUs at a better price?   Would I be overpaying for the cool red light effect?  I know nothing about PSUs.

I would possibly consider running two cards at some point although for my needs it seems like just getting one card every two years or so seems to work out better price wise.

Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at?  

I5 2500K (not over clocked)

7870 GPU (also not overclocked)

120G SSD

two HDD

    That power supply is decent but not great when in proper working order.  As you've figured out, if the fan is dead or dying, that's not proper working order, so it's time to replace it.  Power supply performance does tend to degrade as the power supply gets hotter, which is why good review sites will get them hot and then test them to see what happens.

    I'd advise against choosing a power supply on the basis of having an LED light in the fan.  If you want to get some case fans with LED lights, then have at it.  If a case fan dies, that's just a case fan, and you can replace it.  But you don't want to risk frying things with a bad power supply.

    I'd also advise against buying another OCZ Fatality at that price.  It costs all of $5 more to get something high end:

    Thanks.  Yeah I am not so into the lights.  I see that a local shop has one left in stock at $99 which works out about the same as new egg after shipping.  I can grab it tomorrow on my way home.

    I have that same PSU in both of my computers. Good psu for the money.
