SWG added in faster travel by reducing shuttle times, vehicles, ITVs, Group pickups and perks with cities / factions from leaderboard wins. But at least they did not charge people for it, and you got the perks from PLAYING the game.
People moaned in SWG when travel times got faster, but it is a choice. You can still explore and travel across the planets if you prefer, or wait 10 mins for a shuttle, but I suppose what made the 10 min wait worth it was that players used to socialise while waiting, and made the 10 mins go by quick, but standing there for 10 mins all by yourself is not great.
Rose colored glasses much? It took SOE YEARS to implement many of the travel speed improvements to SWG. Also you got the perks for paying, since EVERYBODY paid in order to play. Money pays developers and designers to develop and design.
Last I checked shuttles, vehicles, ITV's, city perks cost ingame credits and/or ingame TIME to craft and build up (GCW rep grind.) They weren't handed to you just for logging in.
Having to unlock this with legacy through credits is no different.

You're wrong. ITVs were given out just for logging in during SWG's 3rd anniversary. Later, if you didn't have one, you could do a simple collection of pieces found in 8 starports. No credits, no crafting, no rep grind. It was the first thing I did with alts because a new character could go to all 8 starports and get the ITV without having to have credits.

100% correct on all points. And, It took about 15 minutes to go get all of the pieces for the free one.

What is the point in a game if everything is handed to you? That is the point of games, to play, not pay outside a standard fee. Subbers pay with a sub, and F2P pay via shop. If you are playing F2P then paying for it is fine, although in LOTRO the riding skill is available to you once you reach level 20 if I recall, after doing a quest, or you can buy it from the store at level 5.
SWTOR players pay twice for those who sub. Those who sub have to pay for this too, they do not get it for free.

Rose colored glasses are VERY thick because the GCW system didn't get implemented until the game had already been out for three - four years.. And really most people didn't give a toss. Base busting was an absolute joke. Guild leaders would have an alt to throw down the bases and then get on their main and have an "event" where everyone blows up the base by standing around and watching a timer go off. Very rarely did the opposing faction players come by to stop it. It was the most pointless system ever.
And really, fast travel is a perk. It's not a neccessity to playing the game. Then again I've never had the instant gratifiaction mentality that a lot of todays players have.
So EA has realized that their game / graphics engine is horrible and they now need a way to get players across zones without all the load screens (if you have money).
Wait, you think they LEARNED something that is wrong with their game? LOL...I dont think so buddy, they have shown the inability to learn anything that went wrong because they have yet to do anything to actually FIX it. Prime example is their "fix" for people not PvPing is to try to force it by placing PvE quests in a PvP zone.
GREAT fix!
Next up, a fix for crafting by making people have to craft items to complete PvE quests for leet gear!
I hope we shall crush...in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." ~Thomes Jefferson
It's disgusting what they are charging for these days in games. Even if the fixed the game and it magically became fun, I would never play this game again. They think people are stupid and will pay for crap like this. This game needs to die and fast.
Sure the loadscreens suck but priority travel is just another legacy perk like all others. Buy it with cartel coins or credits. Don't see the problem. At least not a new one the doesn't smell of a beaten dead equine.
My biggest issue with SWTOR right now is they keep adding the Cartel packs..which I like to buy occasionally ...but they all have the same old shite. Same ugly "Claw" speeders..same gold eye/red eye remotes...same rare materials. Put some new shit in the packs. If the pack has a different name from the prior pack ..then HAVE DIFFERENT SHIT WITHIN. I recieved a pack with 2 loungewear tops for females....different names .....they looked absolutely identical. Thats another gripe.

That is the problem.
If you had said "Buy it with cartel coins or credits or play the game (and do a certain quest which rewards you with it)"
Then there would be no problem. It would give the game more content, and be rewarding. After getting the ITV in SWG for the very first time by collecting the parts at various spaceports was awesome. It was a simple task, but seriously boosted my motivation for playing the game post NGE.

I can see your point. Most of the items aren't that special though. I buy stuff for looks so I did get a few thing. A statless jacket and a whole suit for my Knight....stats are decent but I've already re modded most of it in less than 2 weeks. The crafting rares are more of a concern for crafters I imagine. I don't craft much lately and haven't maxxed out many at any rate..so i dont even know where you obtain those rare mats normally within game. They just fill spots in my vault for now.lol.

When you max out your investigation or other type missions you'll get them. The tricky part is the resources to make them. Most require those rare resources that can only be gotten through loot gained by doing hard mode ops and flashpoints.

They're just using the legacy system as it was introduced. Sure..i guess a little quest would be cool but I dont have any problem with it as stands. They could drop the credit costs a bit tho imo.

Base Busting: killed a player bought structure (faction) using a mandatory number of classes to start a destruction timer. The base was only vulnerable during a certain time for these attacks. I remember getting a notification from a guildie by phone that the base was being attacked, and logged in to a fantastic fight that was to be the beginning of a long enmity between my PA and the Imp counterpart.
Since we are lobbing opposed anecdotes I thought I would throw this one in. Battlegrounds were borked, but bases worked.

SWG cared about immersion and some realistic world mechanics, something which has been left out in SWTOR completely. Walking around in SWTOR feels like walking in a park of Star Wars themed Mattel plastic action figures.
SWG was also a sub only game. No F2P. SWTOR allows you (now) to play most of the game for free. Even this "nuisance" at best still allows for access multiple ways. Through game credit purchase thru legacy or real money. LIke most shop unlocks they'll be people who buy them and put them on GTN for sale....so 3 ways to get them. SWG was fun but its dead unfortunately ..so all it apparently had going for it meant naught. I hated SWG mostly because I got tired of getting shot through 4 walls with laser beams. If you tried to break line of sight in that game....good luck. Crafting and the space game were the best tho....if they were in SWTOR it would be perfect. That and a few more open areas..lol.

Which is just a waste of credits, and grinding game just to get credits is boring. I would rather play the game / do a quest, and be rewarded the perk, than grind credits and waste them on it. The whole setup is done so you give and up and pay real money
Originally posted by huskie77 I can understand your frustration but I think you are twisting your view of this update to suit your already deeply held views on this game. Real money is not a no-no. It's what allows them to provide a service to those who desire it in exchange for the revenue that allows them to make enough profit to everyone employed and let free players leech. Everything serves a purpose and nobody get's hurt.
I think EA really need to let this go. It is NOT going to be profitable regardless of all the squeezing they do on this game. They are NOT going to recover the millions they wasted simply because they had something decent and didn't manage it properly at the start.
They killed their own chance at glory. Let it go. Should go the route of what SoE did to Vanguard or what Funcom did to AoC so that at least they can enhance or bring back their delicated fanbase, instead of trying to get new players addicted (which they are NOT doing well) and then squeeze every penny off them.

Says the guy who champions a game that offered trading cards which were able to be bought with real money. As well as the other game that drops lockboxes which you then had to spend real money on to open. Both SWG and STO, two games you love to hold up as examples for what you wish TOR to be, offered things with the intention of players paying real money This is no different. If people are foolish enough to pay real money then that is on them. I haven't spent a single dime in the cartel market. Credits are not that hard to come by in this game so they can either earn them the hard way or pay with money
Are the new repair bill mechanics just belly-moaning or a legitimate complaint in your opinion KTanner?
Legitimate. Since the money just goes POOF when you repair your stuff and doesn't get put back into the economy, I'd say it's unneccessary. I don't get why they made that change. There isn't a real player economy in this game so what difference does it make if players sit on a lot of credits?

I don't really have an issue with people paying for these things if not subbing and playing under F2P, but people should not have to pay for it when subbing.
They are hardly the same thing. The trading cards were not guaranteed purchases and a gamble, so not so easy to get, and intended as bonuses for PLAYING the trading card game. I never played the TCG (especially being in the UK where most tournaments were void) nor bought any packs, and just got the 5 free with the sub. As the game had a sub, the only items that were in the shop were cosmetic stuff, not perks or unlocks, and the TCG packs are similar to the cartel packs. These travel perks are like the travel perks that came with the GCW which it did not do in the TCG - You got the perks ONLY by playing the game If people paid loads to get the items, then that was just stupid, I never did it once. If they actually sold items in the TCG, like the stuffed tauntaun for charity, which is the only thing I bought as it was for charity and SOE paid double, then you would have a point, as people would buy the stuff more easily then.
STO just has many more ways to get the stuff.
The way I am thinking of getting the perk is like reputation. Not sure how reputation works in SWTOR yet, as have not tried it, but in STO, you play the game, loot stuff, complete assignments, and get the items. Dilithium is a lot easier to get in STO than credits in SWTOR. There is just more ways to do things. Once you get max level there is not a lot of stuff to do, and you can not replay missions like you can in STO. If you could replay any the story missions as you choose, then it would be easier to get credits. Also as I have a LT sub for STO on one account, no money or even play time is required at all. As I have been with game since its launch the LT sub has now paid for itself, and getting monthly stpiend of ZEN for FREE (no money and no dilithium grinding) something SWTOR players will never have - to get monthly stipend of CC SWTOR players will always have to keep paying.
With Game Update 1.7, we introduced the new Legacy Character Perk, Priority Transport: Personal Starship. This allows players to quickly shuttle to their personal starships. This ability normally has a 24 hr cooldown, and players have the option to purchase Legacy Global Unlocks to reduce this cooldown.
So EA has realized that their game / graphics engine is horrible and they now need a way to get players across zones without all the load screens (if you have money). So now you can insta-teleport to your ship. GREAT FIX. I feel my immersion steaming ..
ARE YOU KIDDING ME, EA? Oh my. I can now improve flaws in the game by spending real money. I .. am .. without any further words, I just don't know what else to say. Cartel Market ;( =(
If you think what EA is doing to SWTOR is bad then you havent been playing MMO's that long. In the past 12 years the one company to screw over its customers the most isnt EA, or Blizzard, or Turbine, or even Microsoft. That company is Sony Online Entertainment, and their supposed "fixes" actually break more things than they actually fix. For some strange reason they seem to think patches like the Combat Upgrade or New Game Enhancements are things that will fix a game. When in all actuallity they drive Customers away. When SOE released the NGE for SWG they drove out 80% of the playerbase. So untill EA and BioWare kills off 80% of its playerbase in 1 patch anything they do is paled by SOE's incompetancy.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

My guess too.
"Buy it with cartel coins or credits"
That is the problem.
If you had said "Buy it with cartel coins or credits or play the game (and do a certain quest which rewards you with it)"
Then there would be no problem. It would give the game more content, and be rewarding. After getting the ITV in SWG for the very first time by collecting the parts at various spaceports was awesome. It was a simple task, but seriously boosted my motivation for playing the game post NGE.

My biggest issue is the fact that items are being added to the cartel market and not crafters. What is the point of crafting if all the best stuff can be bought from the cartel market and then sold?

I hate operations..lol. I love the flashpoints. I'm kind of glad..just for myself..that i can get some rares in the packs for when I might need them. If I get that far...lol
You gain credits by playing the game so his gripe still makes no sense.

Credits are easy to come by.
