Wizards of the Coast owns the property Rights to Dungeons and Dragons and they saw fit to introduce an MMO (Through Cryptic) for the msot popular setting of Forgotten Realms.  DDO is a few years old and is set in the Eberron campaign.  so yes its not uncommon to see a company try to capitilize on their namesakes.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Unless it is stated in a contract that they have exlusive rights, there is no reason why two MMOs with the same IP cannot exist at the same time.

There are currently two Warhammer MMOs, two Star Wars MMOs, two Lineage MMOs and two Everquest MMOs. What makes you think that DnD would be unique?

Also they are using different realms, not that I think it would matter, I doubt they would ever give exclusive rights for a long period of time to such hot property as DnD.

Not after the Atari fiasco which they had exclusive rights if I recall right, at least for the digital liscencing.

Not to mention both are in different editions, for what little worth it is nowadays since neither really holds to the edition that are based off of.

I thought Neverwinter was a CoRPG and not a MMO, has that changed?

Edit: Ah... I guess when PW took over Cryptic it did change. I haven't paid much attention to anything Cryptic has done since they took a big crap all over the Star Trek franchise. I expect the same generic watered down garbage from Neverwinter as well. Their "MMO Engine" is garbage so I wouldn't get too excited.
