Plain and simply they've become arrogant. The success of the PS1, PS2, EQ1, and to an extent the limited success of EQ2SWG. (Also having two the of the best selling RPG series. Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior/Quest exclusive to Sony Console) Have lead them to believe they above being challenged.
Nintendo made this same mistake, back when they drop the idea of using CD media. In favor of costly cartridge based media. Sony ended up capitalizing on that. Then they pulled the samething almost with the Gamecube. Which explains why MS a newcomer to the MMO market is outselling them. In 2 of the 3 major markets. (Those markets being Europe/Gemany, USA, and Japan/China)
Sony will probably be getting a nice slap in the face around the time the PS3 reaches the end of its life cycle.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
People blame SOE for the way they handle things, when really its the devs. I have no beef with SOE, they make good games I think, but the devs for SOE do suck.
Whats wrong with SOE? Couple of things (not in any particular order).
SQG - released 1 to 2 years before it was finished. And then, when they started finishing it, they asked the player base to pay for the most significant features they left out the first time
EQ2 - released 6 months to a year before it was finished. And then, when they started finishing it, it became apparently that their "finished" version was a direct result of throwing out the original vision to copy their biggest competitor (WoW)
Customer support - doesn't exist. The support that *does* exist is hostile to players.
Account deletion - if you delete your account, expect to lose your characters. SOE doesn't want to welcome you back. You stopped paying your $15 a month? Screw you.
Station Exchange - sure, we could take the moral high ground and fight the farmers and the Ebayers and everything that hurts the economy/playability of the game. But we'd rather profit from it. Screw the game - this is about making money. A revolting policy that revolved around making money instead of making quality gaming.
Evil - sure, it can be fun to be evil... for the evil NPCs. Everyone else who's "evil" gets to live in abject poverty, covered with dirt and filth, and treated like a slave by their NPC masters. Isn't evil fun?
Other gaming companies just aren't like that (and in the respects they are, they aren't everything on the list). When compared to others, SOE just looks worse and worse. So why not bash/complain about them? Much of the dissatisfaction they today receive is from players who were once their biggest fans, desparately waiting for the release of a game they purchased on the first day it was out, only to be disappointed and then treated badly when they tried to find out why.
Originally posted by rcook16 I have been reading post and i havent been up on gaming all the much recently but why are so many people bashing SOE? Just wondering
well, lately they are getting the flack for the questionable move of completing rehauling SWG in a completely new version. Announcing this, without any previous communication that they were doing such a massive change, 1 day after their latest expansion , that now includes stuff that will be made obsolete in the changes, went live.
So some people are pissed to see a skill-based system changed in a quest based/level based system.
Other are pissed to have paid 30 $ for an expansion which value is quite questionable now (like all Creature handler items included in the expansion will be gone as the whole class has been killed).
Other still will lose their class in the New Star Wars Galaxies has some professions/skill groups won't be mantained.
Surely others are happy of the changes but as ususal the pissed off people are the more vocal and that's why you see lot of flak in SOE direction in these days.

I am currently playing EQ2 and I'm having a ball, great experience with customer support so far too. I was in Star Wars Galaxies from its dawn all the way up to its, for lack of better words, doom. Also played Planetside for a month.
The biggest disapprobation toward SOE came when they hyped the new expansion Trials of Obi Wan content as having something for alot of classes including Trials for Jedi and having quests that might just make Dark Side Jedi rethink the path they have chosen. A new planet, great items for several different classes (MBH, MR, MPke and Jedi) and then only 24 hours after launch (the expansion btw cost $30) they announced another Combat Upgrade in which they were cutting down the 39 professions to 9, Jedi was now a starter profession (no longer an elite profession) and Jedi was no stronger or better than any other profession. No decay on any items (including weapons, armor clothing etc) which means they were slowly pushing the Artisan Crafters out the door, Bounty Hunters no longer hunt Player Character Jedi only NPC bounties now. Alot of "special attacks" that came with certain professions were being widdled down to just a handful. They were basically turning it into an MMORPG for 10 year olds and everybody was a cookie cutter image of the next.
Once you pick your profession you're stuck in that profession, no more changing professions. Where you used to have to become Force Sensitive through quests and badges and then grind out Force Sensitive xp to fill out 24 Force Sensitive skill boxes before attaining Jedi Initiate (one lower than Padawan) the whole process would take on average 6 months, you felt like you earned the title of Jedi but now anyone can grind out Jedi in about 3 or 4 weeks.
Though I never wanted to be a Jedi I would fill some Force Sensitive boxes for the bonuses they gave you. It was a tough grind when the conversion rate was 30 regular xp to 1 Force Sensitive xp.

I'm sorry, but that's nonsensical. 'They make good games... but the devs for SOE do suck'? How can they make good games with devs that suck? What do you think devs do?
Anyway, all we as gamers see is an end product. If the product'ss bad, we generally have no way of knowing if it's bad development, bad management, lack of resources... we just don't know for sure. It's very hard to point the blame.
However, the buck stops somewhere. Ultimately, SOE have to take a lot of responsibility for problems of whatever nature, regardless of the source.

Sony Computer Entertaiment America is the publisher of the Square Enix titles. Sony Online Entertaiment is the developer of their products. (Bought or acquired in some way or another: Infantry, Everquest. The others such as EQII, PS, Tanarus were developed.) The developer is responsible for the quality of the title released, the publisher the quality of the medium, distribution as well as advertising.
My issue with SOE is their problem of caring more for their subscription income rather then the subscribers themselves. This was evident to me when they released EQ2 when they did. The game was completely not ready to hit the shelves yet, but the big-heads at SOE saw that World of Warcraft was just around the corner of being released. They panicked at the upcoming competition and released an unfinished game into the stores, and the result was an abselute train wreck of a release. A lot of good it did them as well it seems.
Another issue is how they tried to take advantage of Blizzard's overpopulated server problems and leach some customers away from them during their downtimes. Some people might call this a valid practice, but I found it tasteless and downright uncool thing to do.

If what you say is true, then that highly disappoints me, i was about to come back to star wars galaxies, but after a stunt like that, idk its debatable. I thought one of the coolest things was the crafting and killing other player jedis. oh SOE what have you done?

Agreed. I was in Beta for EQ2. On the last night or 2 of Beta, they completely changed the harvesting system and added the level zones. Once the game released, there was node hogs everywhere trying level. The Beta system had worked fine, IMO. And there was not enough time to test the new system.
Oh, and those stupid tools for harvesting. Those had been added at the last minute too. Making one think that they were actually needed when in fact, they were not. A full 2-3 months after the game's release, they were still available to purchase from vendors. I quit playing, don't know if they are still in the game with no purpose, lol.
SOE has consistenly lied to its player base. Thats the main reason people I know despise them. Their most recent lies....
Someone posted a link to a starter kit for SWG on the forums asking what the heck was this new item ??? Tiggs, the director of community relations posts in response that it was a mistake and no such product exists.
During this time, an exansion is coming for SWG. SOE sends out emails to players who still play and those that quit with a list of features. The list includes mentioning a new Creature Handler necklace that will allow them to train even higher level pets as one example.
Also a squad leader revamp was just completed. Finally after 2.5 years of waiting, SL is a viable profession. Up next is a ranger revamp. There was a list of the new features for rangers on forums. Many rangers who had quit came back to finally get their profession redone.
The expansion launches and all is quiet for 24 hrs....then the doodoo hit the fan.

SOE can go to hell. Im sticking to mmorpg developers that actually try and cater the game to its core vets so they'll stick around and play knowing the game wont be completely redone every 6 months
Sure, they do have a bad habit of rushing and then eventually ruining games. But, even the games they ruin are still a lot better than most of the crap out there. They're going all Lucas-y on their games. At first the game is a little unpolished, they fix it up more and more and the games are great but they still can't stop themselves from 'fixing' it more and more until there's not much left of what we liked about the game in the first place.

damn you double post!
SOE games are awesome. For the most part, it is their lack of respect for their customer base that upsets most people.

your montly $15 is not enough for SOE, so they will release expansions after expansions just so they can collect more cash.
I like expansions with real content once a year, fine! Unfortunatly, thats not the way SOE works.
So my main issue with them is simply that they are expansion hundry.
