Best sandbox game ever = Ultima Online

Ultima Online = Best sandbox game ever.

I haven't played it in years. It seems all these major MMO developers with massive budgets are all creating shitty themepark games. I grew out of themepark games back when I had my 486DX computer in the 90s. All there was back then was themepark games.

I speak for everyone firmly on this, we all want a great sandbox game(s). One that allows us to as much freedom as the game environment limits us to.

Big game developers do it on purpose to make themepark games because its less expensive and easily contained.

UO did it so right back in 1998. Especially the housing system. Being able to create your own house virtually anywhere in the game world is what rocked the most.

Guild Wars 2 seems to be the only decent themepark game out there in my opinion. But once you are done lvling...wtf do you do??

Look at SWTOR....WOW OMG what a themepark that game is. I couldnt believe how shit themeparkish it is. You pieces of shit developers need to stop creating games based on money making concepts only. Make a sandbox game that will demolish the whole themepark genre completely.

I can't imagine any MMO players that like themepark games. And if there are any it is only because themeparks have been forced down our throats for the last 14 years.

UO was a horrible game. I was in the beta.

Bad combat mechanics .. too much griefing (some toons died within second spawning in the game), leveling up skills is as bad as today's themepark crafting (remember clicking on a rock again and again?).

Oh .. and tank mage everywhere (at least in the beginning).

Thank god other MMORPGs came along.

I can't imagine anyone that likes Scat porn but they are out there, and they spend more money on pornography than I do.

Have to agree with this.. Certainly the best one so far. But we can always hope.

    Sandbox = freedom

themeparks = rules and linear bullshit.

Most MMOs are situated in a WORLD. And it is misleading to be in a world and be restricted to linear themepark shitty shit shit rules.

UO is the best MMORPG until now.

If EA just changes the graphics it will kick ass!

If EA changes a few things more, UO will rule the world!

Leonard: Penny, you are on fire.
    Penny: Yes, so is Sheldon.
    [laughs]
Sheldon: Okay, that's it. I don't know how, but she is cheating. No-one can be that attractive and this skilled at a video game.
    [walks away]
Penny: Wait, wait. Sheldon. Come back, you forgot something.
    Sheldon: What?
    Penny: This plasma grenade.
    [explosion]
Penny: [laughs] Look! It's raining you.
Sheldon: You laugh now. You just wait until you need tech support. (Big Bang Theory)

Come on. . beta was awesome. . I remember when they got the variables for animals stomach sizes and hunger mixed up and everyone was getting thrashed starving bears just after a wipe. . awesome :)

Tank mages were dumb I agree.  I still think that it was one of the only "virtual world" games . . I wish they would make another.

No. MMOs are games. It is misleading to believe that you need to be in a world ... the goal of games is to have fun. Whatever makes people enjoy is fair game.

I disagree! It's hard for me to argue against EvE, but UO had much more freedom than Age of Wushu and Darkfall: UW. I have both of those games currently installed and have been playing them so it's from experience.

And where exactly "more freedom" you saw in UO compared to AoW. Lets compare PvP systems. In UO its pretty much only PK. While there are numerious different ways to PvP in AoW: school battles, clan battles, head bounties, spying, patrolling, caravan grabbing, offline players stealing, prison breaking, etc.

Does AoW have housing? Kind of interested in this game, and have never heard of it.

UO (only because it actually offers content that doesn't revolve around combat and supplying those combatants unlike EVE) > EVE > Darkfall >>>>>>>>>>> Age of Wushu

Ultima online, wow so much memory, another good game that was nice is star wars galaxy, this was another great Sandbox with MARVELOUS and so far UNBEATABLE crafting system ( i mean unbeatable by other crafting system on any game ). For medieval MMO sandbox UO, and with all the new *addon* they implemented high sea and all that, it give even more stuff to do as you wish. There is some quest here and there and most of all EVENTS that CHANGE the world around you. Despise *reveamp* moonglow invasion also lately ( not so should i add ) overseer taking over the gargoyle city in ish. Anyway, yes the MMO industry really need lots more sandbox game. Luckly or maybe not for some point of view, the indie scene is trying to tackle the issue and i really hope they succeed.

Anarchy online also was a bit sandboxy in its own style, the system i loved about AO is the mission system, why bother crafting horrible amount of story/quest when you can just have an engine designed to spit out *stories* for the sake of it, craft a random *dungeons layout* and off you go. Never the same instance twice.

Yeah, if they went back to a classic type game, and made content with that style forward, I would be back in a heartbeat.  I have gone back here and there, but I do not like the current setup of skills and the systems.  I am fine with the 2Dclient, but it seems they will not be bringing an official classic server back.

I don't think people truly understand what they missed out on. Sure they hear stories, but they still missed it ;)

Just so its clear, I wasn't trying to bash Age of Wushu at all.

Imagine where the game could of been now had they stayed on course! They could of refined so much more, expanded more, improved AI and more and more.... And people were talking about GM's interacting with the community, well UO was a great example of that too.

I will admit, I would note have been subbed all year long every year in UO, but knowing me and my track record, they'd get 6 to 8 months of my year each year anyways. Even with just the old 2D client! Such a shame.
