what weapons to get?

so im looking to get some new weapons since star trek online has a 15% bonus zen from UGC.

so i know there are multiple damage types, but does one type do more damage than others? or as they just the same such as phaser, disruptor, plasma, polaron, etc?

All weapons do the same base damage.  The only difference between each "type" (eg. Phaser, Polaron, Tetryon, Disruptor etc.) is the secondary effect.

For example, Plasma weapons have a chance to  do minor DoT plasma fire damage.  Phasers have a chance to disable a sub-system for a few seconds, Tetryon reduces shield energy etc.

It depends on way to many factors to say one is better than the other. Antiprotons were pretty popular for PvP on an escort back when I played, but I was always a fan of phasers since they were the easiest to enhance with consoles. Disabling random subsystems was also pretty snazzy. Maybe that's all changed since then though.

Here's a list of what the various energy types do, you can also see them in game when you look at a weapon if I recall right.

Although I've generally stuck with Anti-Proton weapons for quite a while, I've also used Phasers and Disruptors in the past.  It's nice to see subsystems, like shields, go down every now and again with the phasers.  Other than that, I think the energy type just provides a very slight edge with regard to the secondary effect, with none being greatly superior to the others.

Another thing to keep in mind is to choose one damage type and stick to it.  I would not recommend trying to do a blend (eg. Phaser and Plasma or Tetyron and Disruptor etc.).

Agree on not mixing energy types - it's best to pick a single type, then slot consoles for that specific type.

The only weapons mixing I'd recommend would be energy weapons and torpedoes (i.e. photon, quantum, etc).  Generally speaking, energy weapons are good for stripping shields, while torps are best against ship hulls when the shields have been breached.

The short answer, without pages of explanation, is that phasers have the best proc (they can disable shields completely), and quantums are the best torpedos. Dual Heavy Cannons are the best weapons; but Dual Cannons are bad.

Thanks for the list. it helps lol. and thanks to everyone that replied.

now i'm going to READ through this list. i've only used phasers so far. i'll prob try something else soon but not everyone can use any type of weapon, is that right? looking at the link it says which specific groups can use what type of weapon.

There are some limitations based on class of ship.  Generally speaking, cannons are mostly usable only on escort class ships, though there are a few cruisers that can mount cannons now as well.  You'll also want to keep energy consumption in mind.

Other than that, there aren't a lot of limitations for mounting weapons.  And, any character class can fly any type of ship, so you're not limited that way either.  For example, a tactical officer can fly an escort, a cruiser, or a science ship.  It just depends on what you want to be able to do, and which bridge officers you want to slot.

Just be aware, you are much better off sticking to the "intended" ship for your class.  So if you're going Tactical, then you are at your best in an Escort, Engineer in a Cruiser and so forth.  Yes, you can fly any ship, but to really get the most out of it, and in my opinion the best team play comes from sticking to your role.
