Ground and Space Combat in STO

ompgamingompgaming Member UncommonPosts: 188

I have been considering playinig STO, especially since its free.  I was wondering what the combat is like in game.  I relly prefer a FPS style (like MAss Effect) of combat over the traditional MMO feel.  That is the real reason I left SWTOR is because I disliked the combat.

I also understand there is space combat as well?  Is it similar to SWG, SWTOR or EandB?  Those are the only space combat feel MMOs I have played.  Sorry, never tried Eve.

One last thing, can other players come on your starship?

Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Let me see if I can help. Ground combat got a big fix a while back and now exists in 2 modes. RPG and FPS. You can choose either with the press of a button. FPS mode made it much more..............palatable, for most. I never minded GC too much, but it got a lot of understandable hate.

Space combat involves your ship, floating in space, circling your enemies, firing phasers and torpedos (automatically), while you pop cooldowns. Sounds boring, but it is pretty fun, IMO. Later ships have more slots for cooldowns to manage. Space is not true 3D. Corkscrewing is required (you'll see).

Yes, you can invite other player to your ship. To...talk.....and such.

Ground combat in STO has a standard MMO combat mode (tab targetting, etc), and a more FPS "crossfire" mode.  One of the mechanics of the game is in using attacks that put a target in an "exposed" state, then using "exploits" to capitalize on the expose.

Space combat isn't anything like SWTOR, in that you fly your ship in space.  It is more of a standard, tab-targetting style, there is some energy management, and you use special abilities from your captain and the bridge officers you have slotted during combat.  In my opinion, space combat is a hell of a lot of fun in the game.

You can invite others to your ship, and there are a variety of bridge designs to choose from.

The game is definitely worth trying, in my opinion, especially since it's free.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

It's been awhile since I played, so I don't know if they've made any other combat revamps, but space combat is kind of like a faster paced PotBS or Unchartered waters. Different ships fight with different strategies, but in the end it comes down to get a good firing angle and working down a particular shield facing.

I was never really excited with PotBS/UW, but I thought it was pretty fun in STO for some reason.

Ground combat is kind of like Mass Effect. You can switch between a over the shoulder shooter mode or the usual tab targeting system in most mmo's.

Other players can come on your ship if you invite them yes.

edit: There's lots of good videos on youtube if you want to get a better sense of the games combat btw.

Combat is both hit and miss in STO, but it really depends on personal preference. Space combat feels robust enough, as you can choose between a Cruiser, Escort, or Science vessel, each with their own capabilities.

For instance, you can go with using a Cruiser and set it up for doing more damage, but it will not necessarily be as effective at doing damage as the Escort whose primary role is damage. Also, Escorts have much better turn rates as apposed to Cruisers. In a Cruiser, you would broad side enemies while using shield buffing abilities, while in an escort you would make direct runs at fast speeds at the enemy, unleashing torpedo barrages and unloading cannons. You also have bridge officers, and these bridge officers take up stations on your bridge, each lending abilities to your pool of abilities for space combat.

It is up to you to train your bridge officers to have the abilities you most want, to both contribute to the space combat and ground combat aspects. An Escort may have one engineering slot with 3 tactical slots and one science slot. Those aren't accurate numbers, just an example. So, with the escort you would have a good many tactical skills, but low on engineering and science. On a cruiser you may have 3 engineering slots and one tactical, or two, along with one or two science slots.

So, there is some customization to be had depending on the career your character chooses and the ship you decide to pilot.

Ground combat is the weaker of the two types of combat in STO, in my opinion. It can be fun, it just depends on skills, gear, and the type of away team you bring with you. You have the typical "RPG Mode" combat where its hot key based. You can set your weapon to auto fire, but you can also swap weapons in combat as well. Its always good to take an expose weapon with you, then switch to an exploit weapon to incinerate an enemy. I prefer this mode to shooter mode.

Shooter mode is sort of like an over the shoulder shooter where you utilize a reticule to acquire targets, and your mouse buttons are for firing the weapon.
Here is a brief video showing shooter mode:

    Shooter Mode

I am not a fan of shooter mode, but that's just my preference. I'm not saying its bad by any means, it just feels a little wonky to me.

Ah, I posted a video showing shooter mode, here is one for space combat:

Yes, you can invite people over to your bridge. You can walk some parts of your ship, but not all.

I hope I answered most of your questions. If I remember something, I will edit this post.
