Why there is no MMO set in Dune Universe? Would you like it?

Sevenstar61Sevenstar61 Member UncommonPosts: 1,686

Just throwing a subject for discussion.

What do you think?

Would it be possible to create MMO set in Dune Universe?

How you would envision it?

Lets create a vision!!!!!

Sandbox or Themepark?

Races?

Classes? Maybe no classes just abilities? Other crazy ideas?

Factions?

PvP?

I guess no space travel and it was monopolized. Any ideas?

Let me start:

Sandbox definitely - explorable planets.

Races: Human, Futar, Tleilax, Handler, Navigator, Ghola,

Classes: Reverend Mother, Honored Matre, Face Dancer, Sardaukar, Mentat, Assasisn, Guild Navigator?, Fedaykin, Suk Doctor,

Factions: Bene Gesserit, Fremens, Tleilax, Guild, Honored Matres, Ixians, Atreides, Harkonnens, other Great Houses?

Dune would need to be a sandbox with a sprinkle of themepark. A themepark would make poor use of the franchises resources. Maybe not races, but a mixture of clans (fremen) and houses (like orginizations). I would go with the houses as the 'classing' leading to 3 faction pvp.  I would consider an ability system based on a mixture of 'dialects' like skill trees. I think this is good based off how much pride and spirit within each house. Its all about the name, atreides, harkonen, and corrino. Fremen would be somewhat neutral in terms of shoot on site, but hostile to all. Benne Gesserete would follow the same guidlines. The last two metioned would be a possible tuning mechanic for the 3 faction pvp, siding with whoever would benefit them most.

The characters would need to feel unique in a non traditional way. And this is where it becomes a niche game. Personal I feel like its unavoidable. The player would need to build a relationship with their character. There needs to be consequences, to have the player think about their actions. No perma death. I wish it to be, but perma death would be too harsh. Perhaps an undetermined recovery period requiring training like a challenge maybe.

The Universe a game is set in is meanless at best . If the game offers nothing else, then it means nothing. That said, sure I would love to see a DUNE IP that was done right.

I like the idea of houses Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino.

But I think Tleilax, Ix and Bene Gesserit would have to have presence too. And what abour sand worms?

Melange as the most valuable substance in universe could be obtained in raids? or Instances and exchanged for cool armor and weapon.

Mix of high tech weapons and ancient swords?

Don't see any "mage" equivalents in this game...

yah it would be great..yah sandbox with a lil..very lil theampark

the thing is tho they would have to reintroduce DUNE to the public in the means of movie cartoon..something..because even if people dont like it or not they will have to market it to kids..and most of those kids have no clue of what DUNE is or about

btw in 90% of the mmos i play i name 1 of my char. someone from dune lol ..love DUNE

also if they made it..i would hope they would go with a couple of PVP servers ..along with carebear servers ..and when i say PVP ..I MEAN PVP ..not these silly "you can only pvp here" or "Q up" to pvp ..i cant stand the watered / dumb down version of pvp and pvp servers nowa days...yah yah i hear ppl say all the time "well pvp just isnt for everyone.. and thats why most dont do pvp" ..ok well like i said..make 2 servers for ffa open world pvp..nuttin wronge with that..you still have your carebear servers..BLAH IM RAMBLING AND FLAMEING AT THE SAME TIME lol ..well you get what i mean..i hope xD

it would be great to play all the diff factions..the sky..or should i say the universe would be the limmit!

With Guild having monopoly for space travel, to be true to books it would be most likely just planet experience.

I agree that there would be a need to re-introduce Dune. These books are one of my favorites. I absolutely love it.

I wish they would make a series like Legend of the Seeker.  Sigh

Not so sure Dune would work as a sand box. Not if you want to keep it "Dune" Once you open a world for players to build, it's going to follow it's own direction. And more than likely, away from what would make it "Dune". Even SWG took on it's own personality that was very distinct from the Star Wars portrayed in the movies.

I am a big fan of Herbert's original books. But I don't think an MMO would do it justice.

That said, I can't count how many times playing GW2 in the human low level DEs, we ran around yelling "WORM SIGN!"
