Some is even paying 200$ or above already..If this really is the truth, then I understand very well why this game doesnt need any subscription fee..

200$ + 60$ (certainly these high rollers also bought Deluxe editions)  Thats even more than any current life time offer available in any game

GW2 is designed around this whole concept, buy bankspace , backpackspace , xp potions etc etc..Basically it's designed same as a  FTP game but It has a box fee of 60$.

It has NO SUB fee,  players see this as top reason for playing GW2 .., For some reason GW2 players make it sound like ANET is suppose to win some sort of medal in gaming charity, when the truth is that they are infact very greedy, or well atleast as greedy as any other gaming company out there .

sure you may set yourself in the cathegorie that doesnt buy anything at all from the cash shop, but when you do there is atleast one guy that pays 40$ in the store.

    1) There is a slight problem with your thinking. MMORPG is no where near representative of GW2 players. And two, people can vote anything in these polls, so those posting $200 could just be lying.

    2) The thinking that those who spend extreme amounts of money in the CS are lazy is a little contradictory. Generally, if they have the money to spend that amount of cash, then they obviously have high paying jobs and work hard for that job.

    3) It's their money, why shouldn't they be able to spend $200 in the CS if they want to? Just because you may not have the money to do it, or would never do it even if you did, doesn't mean someone else will think the same as you. As long as it doesn't affect your ability to play the game what does it matter?

    4) ArenaNet is A BUSINESS. They are NOT A CHARITY. There is NO SUCH THING AS GREED IN BUSINESS. There is only making money and not making money. The only thing that differentiates companies is how they go about making that extra buck. ArenaNet, in my opinion, has done it a much better way from a business standpoint and ethical standpoint. They aren't pressuring you into buying anything from a cash shop. Generally when you aren't pressured into doing something, you are more likely to do it. In this case, generally if you not pressured into purchasing anything from the CS, you are more likely to spend more money than you normally would. It's very smart business. And then ethical because they aren't interfering with your ability to play just to coerce you into parting with additional cash.

I didn't realize that it was wrong for businesses to try and make more money...

Buying a company then raiding all the money from the employees retirement accounts would count as at least greedy in my book.

sub mmos have an entry barrier though, which defeats the purpose since you really can't get as many people to try your game.

btp mmos have the same entry barrier as sub mmos

why do sub mmos need a cash store?  if they are already getting a monthly sub

the point im trying to make is:   any mmo benefits from a cash store for increased revenue

doesnt matter if its sub, btp, ftp

as ive mentioned in other threads -- WOW is more ftp than GW2

you can play WOW up to level 20 without paying anyhing

want to play GW2?   pay $60.00

Nothing to do with WoW being out 8 years....

I don't know if ..many of you misunderstodd me alittle bit..

My main argue all along is...

Players are all over the fact that GW2 has no subscription fee...

While infact  ANET earns the money they loose from players NOT paying a subscription FEE from the in game store..

Sure there is Sub games with store aswell..But those a mostly fluff items, yet I agree this is very greedy..But as many has said..they are here to earn money ..No charity :)

    i agree w you

when WOW launched there was no cash store and no unlimited trial

sub games like COH and EQ2 were early adopters of subs and cash stores

doesnt change the fact that *now*

most sub mmos have cash shops

if the OP wants to complain about cash shops,

he should be including any mmo that uses a cash shop

the major difference is that GW2 dont have anything P2W in thier cash shop like 100% of other F2P mmos

    Think of it like this:

You don't pay a dime past the 60$ to buy the game. You don't have to to experience all the content. I, on the other hand want to support a great product, just because I like it. Anet gets money to make more content and we both win.

The magic with that model is that you pay WHEN YOU WANT, and that it's absolutely not required to play the game and enjoy it fully, unlike the subscription based model where if you don't pay, you don't play, and you have to pay a full month even if you only have a couple of days to play.

This is one of the reasons why I have absolutely no doubt this game will keep a healthy population.

It is well known that this is how effective cash shops operate, and it's not a bad thing by any means.  In the perfect cash shop system, those who have the money to spend will spend the most money and fund the game, while those who need to be a little more frugal with their income can do so and still play the game.  It logically follows that no cash shop items should be essential to complete or enjoy any of the game's core gameplay or provide any tangible advantage that would harm the experience of players who choose to not use the cash shop.

When exectued properly, it's near perfect socialism, and it makes the game more accessible to many more players.

This is where a company may see this business model as advantageous from a business perspective.  It's no secret that subscriptions alienate a tremendous number of potential customers.  They can be intimidating.  I believe the hope is that without a subscription, the game will be more inviting to many more players and result in a consistently larger concurrent playerbase.  The hope is that If they maintain XY players with a cash shop, they may make more money than maintaining just X players with a standard sub.  After reaching a certain threshold, the shear extra amount of players should compensate for the lack of a sub.

And then there are the numbers for f2p or b2p games.  It generally turns out that with a properly enticing cash shop, a game can make nearly as much money per player per month, or average revenue per user (ARPU), as a game with a sub fee.  So that extra player threshold isn't even necessarily very high.

Lastly, if you wish to deny that this model is charitable on the basis that that's too extreme, that's fine.  But then you shouldn't proclaim the opposite extreme: that it is in fact greedy.  It is what it is.  It's a business model aimed at both pleasing its fans and earning money for the company.

Earning money does not equal greed.  And in my opinion, this model is much more user friendly than forcing a sub fee upon players who really don't want to and wouldn't otherwise choose to pay $15 per month.
