Greetings,

I am a long time lurker on these forms and enjoy reading the good and the bad that this community offers. My first post is a help-request. I simply can not decide whether or not to pull the trigger on GW2. I have read quite a bit about the game but I have not participated in the betas; I just cant make up my mind whether this is the place I want to spend my mmo time. I suppose my likes and dislikes in the context of existing mmos might help.

1) I am gun-shy right now. I was fired up for TSW; I found the questing to be incredibly fun; however, when I hit end game in TSW I suddenly realized...the game world does not feel like a persistent-living world. This reminds me more of a global agenda style lobby and I really don't have much of a connection to the environment (unlike LOTRO...which to me has an incredible game world..albeit less than incredible combat).

2) World of Warcraft - I really like the races and classes in this game and the leveling experience (1-70 anyway) is an absolute blast; I enjoy the LFG tool as it allows for eascy access to dungeons. I am a causal player with a job and family so being heavily involved in guild activities is really not possible for me.

3) Warhammer - This is the only mmo I am playing right now..I love the PvP but I stick to tier 1 (I start new toons when I level-out of tier 1). I just dont have the time to be competitive in the upper tiers. I also LOVE the PQ system..this is so much fun for me.

4) Aion - I liked this game for about 20 levels...the mechanics were good but the world felt...soulless. I just couldnt create an attachment to the game that kept me wanting to log-in

5) TSW - Already discussed a bit...I will add some here.. I liked the questing, did not like the end game or the "world" itself. I found the open class system to be a bit dissapointing. I like the idea of specialists who really have to work and focus on a dedicated class and that is what you bring to a group. I suppose this critique also applies to Rift with their soul system.

6)Rift - I love the graphics (graphics are actually pretty important to me ina a game) and I love the rift-events; class system not my favorite as mentioned above. I played this game until around level 40 and quit..just never bought into the game-world (this is apparently a common problem I have with MMOs)

7) Fallen Earth - I loved the crafting in this game and I loved the wide open spaces in the zones. However, the environment was so very drab that I really did not want to log in after a few weeks.

8)SWTOR - This game was fun to me for one-story line..and then I could not make myslef play again. I had no desire to grind end-game. Graphics were ok...classes were a bit boring.

So given my dislikes and likes based on MMOs I have played...is GW2 a game I might enjoy?

Thank you,

GW2 is no different im afraid.

GW2 is casual friendly, plenty to do.

    3) Warhammer - This is the only mmo I am playing right now..I love the PvP but I stick to tier 1 (I start new toons when I level-out of tier 1). I just dont have the time to be competitive in the upper tiers. I also LOVE the PQ system..this is so much fun for me.

DE are essentially no different to the PQ system except they are done a lot, lot better and are far more enjoyable.

    4) Aion - I liked this game for about 20 levels...the mechanics were good but the world felt...soulless. I just couldnt create an attachment to the game that kept me wanting to login.

    5) TSW - Already discussed a bit...I will add some here.. I liked the questing, did not like the end game or the "world" itself. I found the open class system to be a bit dissapointing. No "holy trinity" in GW2 as such which is a serious downside for players who like playing workhorse characters like dedicated healers or tanks. However, there is no need for tanks and healers in GW2, think outside the box a bit, unlearn this mindset and you'll soon discover groups are fun again :)

6)Rift - I love the graphics (graphics are actually pretty important to me ina a game) and I love the rift-events; class system not my favorite as mentioned above. I played this game until around level 40 and quit..just never bought into the game-world (this is apparently a common problem I have with MMOs)

Again, DE (Dynamic Events) are similar to Rifts....but better...much better!

    7) Fallen Earth - I loved the crafting in this game and I loved the wide open spaces in the zones. However, the environment was so very drab that I really did not want to log in after a few weeks.

The crafting is nothing like FE, it's more generic for mmorpg's. The environment is far "fuller" but then it is a themepark game, FE is sandbox(ish).

8)SWTOR - This game was fun to me for one-story line..and then I could not make myslef play again. I had no desire to grind end-game. Graphics were ok...classes were a bit boring.

GW2 classes are pretty generic, little new to see except the Mesmer is kinda funky. Grinding in GW2 has yet to be established, as it's not really gear driven as such much of the funkier top end gear is about finding recipes, finding the necessary resources and making it. Some of the weapons you can make look...well...simply amazing!!

The storylines are a bit..meh...but they aren't the main focus like SWTOR.

So given my dislikes and likes based on MMOs I have played...is GW2 a game I might enjoy?

    Thank you

With an affinity for pve and world events i think with no subs fee....i think you might enjoy GW2 just for this aspect alone...but it has so much more to offer :)

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

Seeing as we share common ground on a lot of the topics you discussed. (Pertaining to a persistant world,  I stopped playing rift at 40 as well, swtor didn't really quite do it for me.) I'd recommend this game to you. Also the fact that there's no subscription fee really keeps from putting you at a huge loss. But yeah mmo's all really depend on your personal preferences. I personally like seeing a shit-load of people running around and leveling up. Whereas in some areas of other mmo's you stumble across those "deadzones" I have yet to find that in GW2. Plus the game doesn't look like a polished turd. The cinematics and the environments are pretty rad. I concur with you on saying that my mmo's need to look GOOD as well. Anyway I'm done jabbering. I got this game two days ago and haven't been able to put it down. (With the exception of now) But yeah I recommend it as far as MMO's go.

if you are looking for tons of end game content and play hardcore and blow through content quickly I'm not sure GW2 is the game for you.  Honestly endgame doesn't seem to be their main concern.

i have been playing them all and i ended up in uild wars 2 and having a blast , pv is different than gather 10 flowers style, some say its repeatitive follow npc laadidaa but i just enjoy going in there and slaying some mobs.

also its solo friendly an everytime there is harder event there is plenty of players around helping you cause you can see events on map pretty similiar as in rift.

    and pvp is awesome!

not to mention buy game and no motnhly fees.

All the games you listed you had to buy and then sub GW2 you dont. Even if you end up getting bored. I doubt you do but if you do. It is not like its a big deal to step away from it and take your time laying it because you do not need to sub. Also its a game if you dont have 60 bucks to throw away I would not buy it any way.

^^ there is more end game content ( by a country mile) in this game apron

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Grr phone ^^ launch than any other mmorg on launch. There is a MASSIVE amount of end-game content even ignoring de's you player during levelling.

    ***edited for length***

So given my dislikes and likes based on MMOs I have played...is GW2 a game I might enjoy?

    Thank you,

This is one of the easiest help posts I've ever answered.

In short, the answer to your question is a most definite: YES! you should buy the game!

Let me elaborate. Based on your post, it sounds as if the game world is incredibly important to you. As if you are really looking for a game that feels 'alive'. Above all else, GW2 does this VERY well. NPCs talk to each other, regardless of whether or not you are interacting with them. You also sometimes hear some pretty hilarious conversations as you go about your business. GW2 is a great game for people who like feeling like they're in a living, breathing world, and want to explore it.

It's not a perfect game, and it's still an MMORPG (it has a fantasy setting, and you are still doing the same general tasks). How it does this is very refreshing, though.

So, my advice to you. Buy it. Buy the game. But go into it expecting a new game. It's not the 2nd coming of jesus. It's just a new RPG, with a ton of content. Buy it, take your time to explore, and have fun. There's a lot of variety in the game. If you find a race, or class you don't like, switch it up a bit. The playstyles are very different between the professions. The class differences tend to be much more about playstyle (how it feels to play them), then it does about roles (who does more dmg, etc.). So find a class you have fun with, and then decide how you want to play them (damage, support, tanky, healing, etc.).

    Hope to see ya ingame.

I don't think the other dude understood your questions at all lol.

I find GW2 more "alive" then any mmo i've played, I'm not level 80 yet but from what I've seen it should serve this need well.

As said (correctly) the game is very casual friendly, no spamming for healers and tanks and all the bs, find 4 people and go, I haven't waited longer then 2 minutes for a dungeon.  Also I hated leveling in WoW, probably why i never made it past 20.  I can't get enough of it in GW2.

    3) Warhammer - This is the only mmo I am playing right now..I love the PvP but I stick to tier 1 (I start new toons when I level-out of tier 1). I just dont have the time to be competitive in the upper tiers. I also LOVE the PQ system..this is so much fun for me.

I'm not familiar with warhammer but I'll assume that upper teirs are people with better gear right? that doesn't make it more competitive.  In GW2 if you want arena based PvP your boosted up to 80 in every way,  Nobody has gear or level advantage over you in spvp.

    4) Aion - I liked this game for about 20 levels...the mechanics were good but the world felt...soulless. I just couldnt create an attachment to the game that kept me wanting to log-in

I don't find this problem here at all.  I'm a straight up addict.

Not too familar with TSW.  And I'm not sure if you'll find this in GW2. Not even sure if I understand your question.  Every class in GW2 has a ton of viable builds that they're available to if that helps.

6)Rift - I love the graphics (graphics are actually pretty important to me ina a game) and I love the rift-events; class system not my favorite as mentioned above. I played this game until around level 40 and quit..just never bought into the game-world (this is apparently a common problem I have with MMOs)

Again I feel very immersed and drawn into GW2.  On a technical level GW2's graphics might not be the greatest but for style and artistic value it's the highest I've ever seen.

    7) Fallen Earth - I loved the crafting in this game and I loved the wide open spaces in the zones. However, the environment was so very drab that I really did not want to log in after a few weeks.

Won't find that problem... at all lol.

8)SWTOR - This game was fun to me for one-story line..and then I could not make myslef play again. I had no desire to grind end-game. Graphics were ok...classes were a bit boring.

No excessive gear grinding. beautiful to the eyes. and I love all the classes I've tried.

So given my dislikes and likes based on MMOs I have played...is GW2 a game I might enjoy?

    More then likely.

    Thank you,

    =]

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

I will comment on one thing for sure. I share your love for WAR some of the best open world PVP was in that game and some of my fondest MMO memories are from just that.

GW2 captures that feel that the RvR lakes had in WAR. Maybe not so much on the keep sieges. But the mayhem of waves of players crashing back and forth over each other are what it feels like. And I love it.

As a matter of fact I find myself logging in and sitting idle while I wait for my turn in the WvW "Q". And its not like the pve is bad in this game it isnt.

And even though the cut scenes in TOR are much better, for the most part GW2's version of cut scenes arnt that bad. As an example, on a scale of 1-10 ten being best, I'd rate TORs cut scenes at a 10 and GW2 at an easy 7.5, they tend to be short and to the point. So there isnt a whole lot of "meat" to them, but they arnt bad by any means.

The way the designed the classes (professions) is a lot like Rifts souls except much more versitility. Switching weapons can completly switch the role of your class. And its one of the things I like most about GW2, it makes it feel a little bit EVE-ish.

Crafting...its not bad. Way better than WoW by far. I wish it had combined itself with TORs crafting style. Where if you invest enough in a certain type you could craft "epic-level" armor/weapons at more or less any level.

To sum up, and in my opinion, spend the money you wont be disappointed. Its worth it, and there is no monthly sub.

it doesnt take very long to ht max level and the max level means jack fucking shit, the end game consists of everything you've been doing since level 1, and nothing new. if you're an achievement hunter go for it, if you dont give a shit about achievements and arnt a completionist the game is going to bore you very quickly.
