How many time will I have to read this nonsense that dynamic events in GW2 are similar to Rift's rifts?
- Rift: some giant random tornado which is actually just a mob spawner spawns a bunch of generic mobs, always the same for one rift type, which have NOTHING to do with the local setting or story at all.
- GW2: each events has a specific setting which fits the general area and the local setting, the mobs aren't just some random crap but also fit the local setting, the events blend into the world to make it feel alive and breathing.
I must add - We know about Dynamic events in GW2 long before Rift even was announced.
Again (100 times already), I'd like to ask for any suggestion or idea how to make revolutionary MMO, since GW2 brings nothing new or revolutionary to the genre? Or this question will be skipped (like 100 times before), so you can continue same old story???
I have repeteadly made suggestions about how to make Rifts or Dynamic Events revolutionary and that is for them to actually matter and not be in a predictable cycle going around an around with no end.
So, to repeat myself, have dynamic events be truly dynamic in the sense that they have real and permanent impact on the world. Towns being taken over actually have impact so for example of faction X takes over Town A from Faction Y then faction X gets more supplies which affects their spawn rate, levels or whatever and this in turn forces faction Y to rally to try and take it back and if they dont they will suffer real consequences from it.
As it is now, you dont really need to care about Dynamic Events as they dont really affect you. Sure it wont allow you to hand in your quest for a short while but you can just wait, log of, or whatever and you will be guaranteed to be able to do that later because this whole thing is cyclic and predictable.
I played Asherons Call 1 way back and there you had people fighting other people and the victor dominated good NPC vendors and spawn points for weeks, sometimes MONTHs and it took a significant effort for another faction to take it back.
GW 2 is mostly a PvE game so that would probably not be acceptable but if those centaurs were PvE mobs but they acted in such a way so that they took over important NPC and spawn points or crafting resources forcing people to make a significant effort to take it back and if not would make the centaurs more powerful, now what would be revolutionary and a change from the current static way MMORPGs work.

IMO it's very hard to Impossible to make a " revolutionary " MMO at this point in time . The " new idea " box is only so deep and most have been used.
Ofc you can tweak, polish, evolve those idea's Like GW2 has in some departments but they are still the same basic idea's at the core.
A revolutuionary MMO will only happen when Dev's think outside the box .. but it's a great financial risk, which is why I doubt it will happen.
ANET took good things from other titles and merged them into one super game. It's like the Avengers movie in that aspect and like that movie it makes for great entertainment.
So no its nothing new, nothing ground breaking, but its special because its fun and enjoyable, just like Avengers Assemble was enjoyable.
I find it hilarious that people have been writing almost literally the same blog entries for days now since GW2 went headstart.
"Hey guys, I figured out what's the root of the problem of GW2! It's that it's not all that new as everyone claims it to be!"
Well... doih. Your blog posts isn't either! Nothing to see here, move along.
This is getting boring, uninformative and the people posting their - of course - highly analytical and oh-so-objective stands on GW2 start sounding a bit desperate for attention.
Adendum: Anyone else getting tired of the feature-list comparisons? Hey! I can do that, too:
GW2 imo is a decent game and is exactly what GW1 should become on most part, but it is NOT like many Fanboi clamied a industry savior or genre changer.
Am i the only who felt the Dynamic events or GW2 in general is one grindy game? i mean seriously while i enjoyed/enjoying the game a lot, but other than no charge me monthly it really isn't all THAT groundbreaking or OMG innovative like countless GW2 fanboi said.
You constantly repeat the same kind of Dynamic events over and over again, escort this , fight that thing, defend that towns.
IF only IF you failed it , then it trigger another quest that ask you to retake the town, or escort another person/whatever again. Your action Ultimately does nothing, absolutely nothing to the world, you can't shape it like most claimed . The game allowed you to have two options for most part, the quest giver/dynamic events trigger doesn't move away, you defend the town then fine come back 10 minutes later to defend it again, or you lost the town?fine just keep fighting not like that town matters to you anyway.
IT IS THE SAME KIND OF TREADMILLIN in ANY themepark MMO. like SWTOR or WoW or Rift, differences is they don't charge you monthly and you don't need to group up for quests nor read wall of text .
And for PVP, WvW is another grindfest, the map won't change the town/points/keeps won't change, everything is set and all you can do is occupied and defend these "buildings" to grind more points. HOWEVER I personally still enjoy WvW a lot and it is Ilum should had been. But my point is, after months of fighting do you still feel excitied ? you are constantly fighting on the same map over and over again with NO meaningful impact on the world, you can't destroy stuffs and build stuffs, you can't communicate with one of the faction and plot to takeover the dominate faction. For instanced PvP, well to be honest it is same old stuffs, three capture the points map and one with stupid crappy underwater combat.
What i am sayin is GW2 is a good game and will be more successful than GW1 due to its publicity, a open world and lot of
But i personally fear the success of GW2 would well....make the genre fill with GW2 like games, sugar-coated grind. For some reason it reminds me of LoL.
Btw, is it me or the main plot/story quests of GW2 is weaker than GW1? i can't stand those stupid cut scene with two person bobbling and staring each other...
I own the game and honestly, I just am unable to get into it. It's a decent enough game but it's certainly no "WoW killer". I think time will tell how good this game becomes and I woulnd probably recommend it to my friends because I think ti's worth the 60 bucks especially with no subscription fees but I think there are better MMOs out there at this point and Guild Wqars 2 does need some refinement and probably could have used an in-game tutorial.

This is where word like "opinion" and "majority" have to be applied.
For now, for each person saying "GW2 is bad" or "just average", you have 10 persons saying the game is great. That's how you measure success, and not just with your personal opinion about it, even if you wish it worked that way ;-)

What would it be other than his opinion?
Do you think that your "estimate" of 1 in 10 saying it's bad is fact? You must think so, or you'd have said "I think" or "In my opinion" - but you didn't.
Anyway:
Since you seem to emphasize monetary success as being relevant here:

Before and after the launch of GW 2 I heard a lot about this game being the next big thing, WoW killer and all that, and altough the latter may be true (more because of the age of WoW rather than GW 2) I really don't see anything special about it.
I made a blog article about it, below is the content.
I am a frequent poster on MMORPG.COM and recently there was an article asking if Guild Wars 2 being the saviour of MMORPGs. Now the article was not really claiming that but it was more of an article to start to get people to think. However a lot of people posted and said either it was or it was not and I have been playing the game since the headstart and for me I really can't see it being that special.
I mean the game is a good solid ThemePark but if you look at it's features it is really not all that unique.
Dynamic Events - These are basically like NPC quests happening around the world and where anyone can join at any time and they are sometimes also chained in the sense that the outcome of one event can lead to another. Altough interesting and more fun than your standard MMORPG quests, they are quite similar to the Rift events you have inRift and Public Quests in Warhammer Online. So they aren't all that special and my main beef with them is that, atlough the claim to be dynamic, world changing and all that, they rarely are. At most some NPC town will be taken over for a brief moment until they are eventually killed, which usually happens quite fast as they are not designed to be all that tough.
MMO without subscription cost. That is true but the game has a cash shop so in essence it is just like any F2P game with the added cost of having to buy the use of the client.
Story line quests. They are alright but quite juvenile, in my opinion, and nowhere near the same level of Star Wars the Old Republic.
Combat - Again altough fast paced and exciting, nothing revolutionary. It is TAB target based with activable powers/spells and with the added twist of being able to quickly swap weapons for different powers.
WvWvW PvP. This sounds like it would be revolutionary but it really isn't. It is just a zone where PvP occurs but instead of it being from people of other factions on the same server, it is between people of different servers. Really don't see why that is all that better and I would much prefer the faction based one because that makes much more sense.
So what is exactly so special about Guild Wars 2? It is a solid, ThemePark MMO but there is very little revolutionary about it.
I will make it easy for you to understand
Game 1 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature A as a different twist
Game 2 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature B as a different twist
Game 3 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature C as a different twist
Game 4 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature D as a different twist

Game 7 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature G as a different twist
Game 8 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature H as a different twist
Game 9 is the standard themepark mmorpg with feature I as a different twist
Guild Wars 2 is the standard themepark mmorpg with features A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, L, M, N, O as different twists

Nope, I didn't say anything like that.

From what I can tell, GW2 is the first mass appeal, full featured, AAA level quality, buy to play themepark MMORPG* that has ever been released. Regardless of how much or little in terms of "new" game mechanics are included, people bought it, played it and are liking it.
Compare this to the last several years of releases, and it looks pretty "special" to me.
* GW1 is a CORPG, so it doesn't count.

I didn't say you talked about money. I asked you what use it is to know that a lot of people like GW2?
A lot of people like Titanic and a lot of people loved The Bold and the Beautiful. A lot of people loved WoW.
So what? What's the point? I don't get it.
Also, it's not a fact that 1 in 10 says it's bad. That's a fabrication - though it's not necessarily a bad estimation.
Well because of hype lot of people don't understand this. Experienced players know that overall - Guild Wars 2 is nothing special. What is special about this game is that they delivered what they promised. Nothing more, nothing less. And quality of the game after launch is high. It's not half baked like The Old Republic six months ago etc.
Like you said, once they annouced WvsWvsW (3 faction warfare) everyone said - DAOC. When they said dynamic events - game like Rift and few others come in mind. B2P is also nothing special. Combat is a little different because it's a mix. Combat overall is ALMOST dynamic like in TERA. When you swing axe you hit EVERYTHING on it's path but still you have tab targeting for range weapons and you use tab to get detailed information on enemy. And you character always face enemy you target.
Anyway - it's nothing special but also it's very special. Because it's solid, great MMO that bring best what genre (themepark MMO) have to offered in one single game. And they didn't jus throw ideas into one place. They make it work together.
People that are experienced with MMO knows this. Everyone else just go with the hype.
EDIT//
BTW - to all people that really expect miracles from GW2. If they would create innovative, never seen game with features so great that no one ever don't that before them - they would probably start entire new genre. GW2 would not be mmorpg but something entirely new. Expect good games - not miracles. They never happen.
They did what WoW did and every other company has tried to do... took what's good from various games and made it better. I think in the future we'll be seeing WoW trying to clone GW2.
Dynamic Events - These are basically like NPC quests happening around the world and where anyone can join at any time and they are sometimes also chained in the sense that the outcome of one event can lead to another. To answer the questions:
1. They didn't re invent the wheel, but they make it ride smoother.
2. I have my concerns for the future of this model. The next company could easily abuse it. But so far, Anet has shown themselves to be true to their word.
3. And what was the biggest running joke about SWTOR's story line in this forum? --Hint-- Space Bar.
4. I guess Combat in an MMO is one of those things. You'll either like it or not. No, it's not traditional, but then again, what would you have said if it was? All I have to do is look at your 1st question to answer that.
5. Again, personal preference. some seem to like it the way it is. Some don't.
So, maybe all people needed was a solid Themepark and not something entirely revolutionary. The genre's been lacking a solid Themepark for a while now.

This^^
But unfortunately, that doesn't appeal to me. Whereas WoW was a themepark novelty, i only wanted to do that crap once, no matter how good they made it in other games. The only game where i could really spend years in would be another SWG, sandbox style game where i can develop a character, with a name that is recognised for being something, not an faceless dummy with a shiney hat.
However, if i felt no new sandbox would ever be released again, i would most certainly be playing this now. As it stands, i don't want to invest time building a character for it to be meaningless grind.
WoW killer ? who said anything about killing wow ? Blizzard is killing WoW themselves, no game has to do that rofl.
Also this has been discussed over 500000 times.
#1,Dynamic Events was in Warhammer also, doesnt mean they where any good tough. Dymanic Events was in Rift also, doesnt mean they where fun and good tough.
#2.You dont have to see the cashshop to even remotly be competitive or having fun, its just extra stuff wich can come in handy, but by no means do you have to buy anything from the shop.
#3.Yeah SWTOR personal Story was so epic.....not, more anoying tbh
#4. I like it that way, and the skill system make's sure you can keep having fun in any department in GW2.
#5.WvWvW its Epic it realy is, but you woulnt understand that as a hater, now go back to Rift WoW SWTOR while we are having massive amounts of fun.
The wheel of mmo's cannot be invented again and unless Virtual Reality come's out next your each mmo will borrow some aspects one way or another, i dont know what people expect these days from mmo's but if you dont like GW2 then your in for one hell of a wait to get something similar or even better. Maybe in a year or 10 again ?

Are you talkin' to me? Are you talkin' to me?
- PANTERA at HELLFEST 2023
They did what WoW did and every other company has tried to do... took what's good from various games and made it better. I think in the future we'll be seeing WoW trying to clone GW2.
Did you notice that word SEEM?
That's me trying to figure out your point - but I didn't claim to know what you meant - because it wasn't clear.
That's why I asked what I asked. But if you can't explain your point - that's alright.
YES,it is that special.
It´s the best MMO experience for me to date.
I´ve played all major MMOS in the last years (WoW,Rift,Aion,AoC,LoTR,Swtor,TSW....)
GW2 for me is the best thing since sliced bread, simple as that.
Michael Phelps can swim.
But so can I. And I did it before he was born.
So what Michael Phelps does... it's just not that special.
The word special is misleading. Better doesn't always mean special.
Bite Me
HAHA! So true.
Look what it means when applied to the word education.
This^^
But unfortunately, that doesn't appeal to me.
Maybe in a year or 10 again ?
good day sir.
Quoted for truth.
