Did they ever add more ground based gameplay?

"More" in what time frame? There's been quite a bit of "ground" added since launch, but it's still the same clunky ground combat it's always been.
The most recent season added the Tholians, and you can now go fight Tholians on Nukara in an environmental suit. So it's vaguely different in the sense you go down alone (because it would make sense for the Federation to send down its most valuable fleet Captain Rear Vice Admirals to a hell-planet to fight swarms of fast-spawning Tholians all alone) without your away team. But it's still the same clunky combat.
Hard to answer your question though without knowing what time frame you last looked at the game. Were you around for the "DS9" season? Walking on the exterior of DS9 as an infiltrator was fun.

As stated above, it depends on the timeframe being asked about.
They've added the Defera (Borg, added last year) and Nukara (Tholian, added last month) ground invasion areas. They've also added some Fleet based ground missions with Season 6. Then, there were ground portions of the Dominion featured episode earlier this year. There are also Foundry missions.
That's about what I can remember.
In the Ask Cryptic from today, someone else had asked a similar question, which got this response:
"Q: (wry1) Can we get more endgame content that utilizes our ground Bridge Officers? It’s such a shame we’ve spent time developing them and hardly get to use them.
Dstahl: We agree and plan to address it adding some ground missions that allow players to utilize their highly trained and well-equipped bridge officers. There was a forum posts that suggested making single player or co-op versions of ground STFs. There are several interesting options we could pursue. Whatever the final solution, we acknowledge that we need more Bridge Officer play at end game. "

Season 7, due before the end of the year, is supposed to center on regular episode content set in a new sector.
