Buying this week: BEST PERFORMANCE Gaming Laptop for under 1000$?

Son0fZeusSon0fZeus Member Posts: 49

I know this question has been asked a lot and there is lots of information available but I'm looking for the most recent product. With the i7 coming out I have noticed there have been many price changes around the market. If anyone could lead to top 2-5 models of Gaming Laptops I would really appreciate it as I'm buying one this Sunday.

My biggest concerns are ram and graphics card.

    Cheap. Gaming. Laptop

Pick 2 of the above, you can't have all 3

that processor is SUPER slow and it will not run games like you want it to . Personally if you are money tight and want to get the best bang for your buck and check out Ebay and Craigslist. Ive run across serveral gaming laptops that were under 800$ Anything less then a real graphics card on your laptop is going to end up not giving you performance same with any duel core under 2.5-3.0 . Remember buying any laptop with an integrated card means you CANNOT upgrade your card ever you are going to be stuck with a paper weight in a year or two.

honestly i have the extra money but i thought a beter idea would be to buy something for under 1000 and then replace it after 3-4 years instead of buying something for 2000 and waiting 6 years....

to tell you the truth ive seen some NICE deals on craigslist that are really hard to beat from any store but how can i trust someone with a laptop ?

gaming with a laptop is something you should only be doing if you have no other option.

However if you must... go big or go home.

Only a 17" or bigger will house decent gaming hardware

invest in a cooling pad, laptops can lose up to 50% of their performance when heated... which doesn't take long.

You have money like that then get a low cost laptop like the one I linked and a desktop for gaming.

So basically....How much do you need the gaming laptop for?  Do you need to use it on the train?  On the cafeteria/lounge? In the classroom? Or bringing it to work sites?

i already have a nice PC hooked up to my 40" tv and honestly sitting on this chair/bed is sometimes really uncomefortable. but my biggest reason is that i need a laptop anyways for school so i thought ill throw in extra 500$ and get one i can also game on while at school or friends house.

i was thinking something like this

That's pretty good if you want to stick to a $1000 budget.  That gets you a high end processor, a mid-range video card (top bin of the bottom end GPU from the current generation), and a 1080p monitor.  The glaring flaw is the glacially slow 5400 RPM hard drive.  For Lenovo and/or Amazon to advertise that as "boot up quickly" is blatant lies.  But if you've got a Windows 7 DVD, you could buy your own SSD replace the hard drive, do a clean install of Windows 7, reuse the license that came with the laptop, and stay within the $1000 budget.

But the question is whether to get a $1000 gaming laptop at all.  It depends some on your circumstances, but I'm guessing that it makes no sense for you.

First up is the question of why you need a gaming laptop at all.  Even if you need both a gaming system and a laptop, it doesn't follow that you need a gaming laptop.  For most people, buying both a cheap, portable laptop and also a gaming desktop makes more sense, unless you're on a severely restricted budget, which doesn't seem to be the case.

Higher end gaming laptops really only make sense if you're going to take the laptop with you, plug it in, and play games away from home.  For example, a business traveler who wants to play games from his hotel room.  That doesn't sound like your situation.

"sitting on this chair/bed is sometimes really uncomefortable."

Sounds like you need a better chair and/or desk, not a gaming laptop.  Laptops are ergonomically horrible, and that's one of the huge advantages of desktops.  Desktops let you position everything independently so that you can be comfortable while using the computer.  Laptops force the keyboard to be right up against the monitor, among other flaws.

If you do want a gaming laptop, then excluding SLI/CrossFire rigs, there are basically two choices:  the Alienware M17x and the Clevo P170EM (or P150EM if you prefer a 15" form factor rather than 17").  That's the same two choices as the previous generation had, except that this time, it's with Ivy Bridge and Pitcairn rather than Sandy Bridge and Barts.  I halfway expect MSI to make it three choices at the high end this time, but they haven't done so yet.  Alienware charges a lot more than Clevo for the same hardware, too.

You should realize that in order to get high gaming performance, you sacrifice portability.  High gaming performance means high heat output, and that means a laptop that is bigger, thicker, and heavier.  It also means gaming on the battery is a no-no, as is gaming while the laptop is on your lap.  For the "play games from a hotel room" model, none of those are a problem.  But if you want the laptop to be highly portable, you'll need to give up a lot of gaming performance.

The idea of replacing memory yourself is that the laptop comes with a 4 GB module and a 2 GB module.  You buy one 4 GB module and replace the 2 GB module, and then you have two 4 GB modules.  You don't need to replace the 4 GB module, too.

If you're referring to Castillle, then look at the price tag.  It's not a $1000 laptop at all, and you're not going to get a high end video card for that price.

Furthermore, if you want to stick to a 35 W TDP for the processor and graphics together, then the AMD A8-3520M was the top of the line just a few months ago.  The low power draw means that it will stay cool, and you can even play games on the battery.  And again, look at the price tag.  It's a different class of product entirely.  It's not a bad product by any stretch; just a different one that isn't what a lot of people are looking for.

Also, I'm not sure what you're talking about with a "duel core under 2.5-3.0".  It's a quad core with turbo core up to 2.5 GHz.  Buying a laptop with a discrete card also means that you can't upgrade the card ever.  That's a problem of laptops, not one of integrated graphics.

And if you're referring to the original poster, then you're just nuts.  An Ivy Bridge quad core is the high end right now.

The point of that laptop is to get something somewhat decent for gaming in an 11" form factor.  It's a much slower video card than what the original poster linked.  And there's also the question of whether you want a tiny 11" monitor.

craigslist is iffy yes but only if you do stuff stupid. Meet in a public place , contact the seller ahead of time and make sure he calls you and doesnt have a blocked number etc. If you are careful you wont get ripped off , i personally used to buy broken computers back in the day when craigslist was the place to be and would fix them then resell them on ebay and craigslist making quite a bit of money. I never once had any issues with sellers or buyers most people are honest people just looking to sell something they do not use anymore or are hard on times etc. Just make sure you are careful and dilligent so you dont end up getting robbed or ripped off is all.

Also the computer i showed you and that website Ibuypower is a well known gaming company , if you buy anything name brand like asus dell acer etc you get what you paid for which isnt for gaming. Hardly any companies out there make gaming rigs except dells alienware and they are a RIPOFF on prices. You are much better going to a specialist internet store like cyberpower or Ibuypower , you get a warrenty and you get a gaming pc to exactly what you want. Dont buy just some brand name crap because you see it on sale.

Ill give you an example HP released a gaming desktop as part of the FX series with beats audio for 899.00 for the tower. It was awesome on the top view but once you dig inside its a joke of a computer for the price. A motherboard inside that cannot oc for a fx unlocked 6100? and then 1 slot pci-e motherboard so you cannot do crossfire or sli? see what i mean. You get exactly what you pay for with brand name pc's and I work on them all day long and can tell you they are a ripoff if you want to be a serious gamer.
