Hey guys, I'm quite new to these forums, but I am a young MMO player, who's started playing MMO games since 2007.
Yes, I started out on Runescape, and I still play it to this day. I loved Runescape, not for it's PVP, or PVM. I was OK with it, didn't really find an addictive factor in it, but what I found most fun was the quests. The quests in the game, for eg. storylines and so on were amazing, and it was very developed, puzzles and many other things, and I always looked forward to a sequel to many quests. That is when I started my love with questing.
Then, around last year, I bought World of Warcraft, because I hear so many people play it. First of all, what suprised me most... was the fact everyone was sooo old this game, for eg. 20 years old plus. This is when I realized, why people call Runescape a kids game, because I knew a lot of people around 14-18 in Runescape, while I could barely find anyone 16 or around my age in WOW. I spent a lot of time on WOW, exploring a lot of places, questing. I was very suprised by how big the map was, it was amazing, like endless quests. I quite liked it, but I felt it was really boring sometimes. For eg. Majority of the quests were always like 'Kill 5 ogres' or 'Kill 10 falcons' or something like that, it was far from what Runescape quests offered, IMO. I really didn't quite get the storyline, so I decided to buy the Wrath of Lichking expansion pack. This was when my fun really started, I actually got to know a storyline about the Lich-king etc, but I still haven't finished it yet, as I really am not interested in WOW as much as Runescape.

In summary, I loved Runescape because of all the different skills, and quests it offered to me, maybe it is because I'm used to it as it's a game I've played for.. 6 years. Currently, I'm nearly maxed out and I want to really try out a different MMO, and Guild Wars 2 I found. I researched the game quite a bit, obviously a lot of people are excited about the PVP, PVE, the content and graphics, and the 'Dynamic events', which is quite strange to me. I realise it's basically questing, but events happen on top of another event, etc.
Now what I'm hoping is, these 'quests' or 'events' in GW2 won't be like 'Kill 50 ogres' or 'Kill 32 Warlocks' or something, because I would really be disapointed. I want better quests and storylines, and I'm wondering what kind of quests does GW2 provide? Because I was a tad too early to get into BETA, I cannot experience the game myself. I don't think I've read anywhere about the quests itself and how it is like. I know this is quite long, but I would really appreciate it if someone filled me on, how the quests are like in GW2.

It should be a different experience for you. There are not really "quests" in GW2, except your personal story quests. Everything else is just events and exploring.
I can't really recall many events that were "go kill X Y's". There were a couple where you would push an event chain to a point where some shaman or something would spawn and you needed to kill all 3 before they finished summoning something. But it was more epic feeling and they were more boss like mobs.
There are definitely events where you kill X waves of mobs, or "break the moral of X", but these events scale. If there are just a couple people, there might only be waves of 5-8 mobs. If there are 20+ people, you could have 30+ mobs coming at you. It gets pretty chaotic quickly and always feels like something new depending on how many people are in the area.
There are also some events where you have to retrieve items and returun them to someone, but these are group based quests, everyone in the area is contributing. And there are usually lots of mobs to kill to get the items, or you can simply gather them. Most of the Heart quests have multiple ways of completing them as well.
You won't find yourself doing mail delivery quests and "kill 10 rats" quests in GW2 very often, at least not in the way WoW and many games seem to do it. It is much more group focused. And if you don't want to do that particular event ... move along and do a different one. It is that simple.
Plus, every level you are unlocking more and more content, and the sidekicking system automatically levels you down to the appropriate level for any area in the game. So things will always remain challenging and rewarding, even at level 80 (you keep gaining experience even at max level to get more skill points)!

Either way, best of luck in finding your next game! You may want to look into giving TSW a try, it has good questing although it also does have a lot of the aforementioned "kill x number of y" quests, it also has good story quests.

I haven't seen any 'kill X rats' quests in game. However, there are still a lot of events that have you killing something. I.E.
An event might be:
'Repell the centaur invasion'. And you're contribution will come in the form of:
'demoralize centaur invasion force' (progress bar) which can be achieved by
- killing centaurs
- repairing the garrison
- assisting downed soldiers (reviving)
- sabatoging centaur siege equipment.
For this reason some people choose to see it as the same thing as WoW. Because in some ways, you can just be killing things all the time. However, the game gives you a choice. You can choose to treat it like a WoW game, or you can try and play it differently.
The most obvious 'events' in the game are renown hearts. They look like little heart icons on the maps and will always be active. However, most of the real events in the game are 'dynamic events', have no icon, and you will have to find them. An event can be anything from finding a woman's lost husband, to helping a kid assemble a snowman army, to stopping a horrible summoning gone wrong. And most dynamic events have chains, so when you're finished, it's not always over. You often have to stick around and be observant to see what will happen next.
- The important thing to remember about this game (if you are giving it serious consideration), is that it offers you a lot of choice as to how you play it. If you do pick it up, don't just assume that there's only 1 way to play the game. Explore, actively look for new things to discover, and the game will be an absolute joy for you.
It depends on player prespective. If you want an immersive questing experience you will get it, if you want just to kill mobs you can do just that, it depends on you. That's hard to explain with words so watch these two videos as I explain:

The majority of players will experience the bear attack as seen in the above video. Just a random invasion of bears, players banding together to kill them. It's fun but it's not the "real thing" either. If you want to stay at that, you can, however if you are one of those that are looking for a more complex questing experience you can also do that, you can immerse yourself easily in the game. You can watch the rest with the big battle with the Frozen Maw, but I'm comparing the bear event here

Now go to 2:10 of this video and watch why the bears attacked the village. It wasn't a "random - repeatable" event. The bears were a part of a more complex event chain.
How many players will make the connection between the Ram and the bears? Or the first part while collecting meat? Few will, they will probably say it's a "random encounter" but it is not.
This is why I say it is up to the player to make the questing awesome and exciting in the game. You want immersion and excitiment? You can have that, you want just to kill monsters? You can have that, it's up to you.

@OP You might also want to take a look at TSW. It has many skills and there are puzzle like quests.
Disclaimer: I don't take any responsibility in case this now turns into a GW2<->TSW flaming thread. Only reason I added the comment above was that it might be an MMO which matches the OP's requirements. Personally TSW is not my cup of tea but I believe in diversity for MMO games.
I enjoy TSW atmosphere/setting and some of its quests and I'm a rabid GW2 fan/player.
Not so keen on TSW combat though.

I don't know how you could be a tad too early to get into beta, but whatever. You missed the curse and massive giveaways? Then stay on the lookout for more beta key give-aways. I got one of the 20K keys that were available to free accounts.
People are also pleasantly surprised by the questing in TSW if you'd consider that. In GW2 you'll also be killing things, but it'll be more like defend the village, search this, exploration rewards etc. It will be presented in a different way, but at the end of the day you'll still be killing a lot of things for "quest rewards". If questing doesn't have to be completely new then these two titles are worth considering at the moment.

The battle for the fisher village near the lake where those snake creatures (Kraits) come to take prisoners is absolutely insane too. You'll die a lot there if you aren't careful.

Yeah but you have choice, you might kill 2 of x, collect 3 of y and interract with 5 of z in order to finish them, you don't have to kill x of y at all.

My two favorite dynamic events were:
That fishing village quest is ridiculous. My girlfriend and 4 other people fought our butts off to save that place, and ultimately failed.
And that's where GW2 becomes great.
In WoW or any other MMO if you fail a quest you have to reset it and try over. Not so in GW2. In this case, since we failed to save the villagers, we were tasked to head out to a Krait outpost in the middle of the water and save villagers from the slavers. Had we protected the village better initially, there might have been some other resulting DE.

For that matter, EVERY DE that involves killing is one of those but...it never FEELS like it. I've never done a GW2 quest and gone "OK, I need to kill 13 more of these buggers to move on..." I just jump in, start doing stuff, and before I know it I completed the Heart, the DE next to it, and the followup to that DE. And now thre's this guy asking me to come down the road a ways to help him...

While there are "kill x quests" and "ftech x quests", they're semi-disgused and wrapped in such as pretty, fun package you don't notice the grind. And there IS a grind...thre's ALWAYS a grind. The trick is making it so fun you don't notice that you're grinding. By putting the focus on what you're doing rather than the invetibale "get this reward, move to the next area", it just seems more fun.
You have it backwards here. They aren't disguised. It is just that other games don't give you any proper context to why you are killing something or why you are fetching something (outside of quest text, which nobody really bothers reading, since it doesn't matter).
@OP - In GW2, you get the context that should have been there. In fact, the context runs up and tries to poison the water, blow up pipes, set farms on fire, and cause general mayhem (reference to several events in human starter area). These things happen for everyone, not just you, and often they happen even if nobody is around to do anything about it, which may lead to towns being overrun by monsters, or other crazy things.
It isn't questing. It is the world moving and you reacting to it. It is immersive.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
Some of the quests in GW2 are still the same old stuff, some are really different though.. like having to snowball some kids or turn into a pig and seek out some truffles. The problem for me is, I love the game, but 'a lot' of quests that are different than what we are used to tend to have very silly and immature themes. That's not really to my taste but it's not a game breaker.
You are often given choices though.. like the first heart in the human starter area. You can pound mounds and kill wurms, feed the cows or water the plants to complete it. It's all made more interesting though because other things happen as well. A giant wurm sometimes appears in the middle of the farm, bandits might attack from the south.. they sometimes attack from the west as well. It might be possible that all three can happen at once, not sure. These sort of things really do break up the pace and are not rare. They happen everywhere all the time and honestly there will be times they happen so much that it'll start to do your head in. It's in a good way though, you are forced to get off the grind treadmill... and that stops you from getting bored. It also extends your playtime and more content is usually always a good thing.
Another issue though is that because so much is going on all the time you have hardly any time to understand 'why' it's going on. A stag sort of mob might appear with an event where you need to kill it, it'll have some unique name. But what the hell is this stag? Why do you need to kill it? The info might be out there somewhere in NPC conversations or something like that. Everything kicks off so fast though that you rarely catch on to any of the lore. By the time you're done and might want to find out about it a load of bears can start attacking the outpost nearby (where the info on the stag might be found) and you're right in the thick of it again.
If you want a game where the questing is really structured, voiced and has tons of details then you want to try out TSW like others have suggested. Some quest are samey and some are really good, either way you know why you are doing it and they have plenty atmosphere. The kind of atmosphere you don't need to be a 'proper' roleplayer to enjoy. The game took me pretty much by surprise. I thought there was no way it could compete with GW2 and it would be barren before the year was out. I was definately wrong.
They are disguised, you fill up a progress bar instead of being told upfront how many you have to kill.
I realise there is an explanation for this - given that in many cases you can also do other things to fill up that yellow bar - but it's one of the few things that genuinely irks me about GW2, that they don't tell me "how many" that yellow bar represents.
