TSW: 2012 Game of the Year?

As a general rule, no matter how much you love any given MMO. Play it for more than a week before you call something GOTY (not like GOTY label has any meaning these days considering every minor blog about gaming gives their own GOTY awards...) . Wait till you see the game at "end game", wait till you go through all zones, all missions, come back in 2-3 months, and if it still is enjoyable, then it will actually have some validity in it.

Every game is fun when it's fresh, happened to every major MMO release over last years. TOR was "GOTY", WAR was "GOTY"... it's almost as good as the whole "WoW killer" cliche that's thrown around constantly. Give it time.

The difference is that I can keep playing GW2 casually for 15-30h / month without feeling that it's just a waste of 15$ / month. Players are much more likely to stick around than in sub-based games.

@topic: high user scores are normal for games that just released. TOR was #1 as well.

A User rating of 9?  That wont last long.  Tera was number one in ratings the first week it was released as well, not sure where it is now, but its not in the top 7 listed on the front page.  Lately, every hyped new game upon release has catapulted into the number 1 spot for a couple weeks or more then plummets.  Come back in a month and see where TSW ranks.

The only game on the horizon I can see lasting in the number 1 spot longer than Rift has is going to be GW2.

Ever since GW2 was announced,  no sub-based MMO has provided me with an offering of a similar level. TSW included. Also, I was burned by Failcom in AoC...

I could have played TERA, chose not to, its crashing and burning. I could have played TSW, chose to wait for GW2 (2 months now)...lets see what happens for TSW. At least it isn't as bad as AoC

    GOTY? GW2, no question.

Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

Actually, i can flip that logic around and use it. Because there's no sub, players feel there's even less of a reason to keep playing the game once they're bored. People jumping in for maybe an hour a week, maybe 3 times a month isn't much. Keep in mind, we don't know what will happen, and i don't claim too, but business model doesn't change the fact that this game is still a normal mmorpg with limited content and population requirements. And, no saying the game will "fail"

Also, i don't know about other players, but i never pay a sub without knowing for sure i'm getting my times worth

I mean to me, like SWTOR, GW2 is both blessed and anchored by its IP. And although its second take on the fantasy setting for mmorpgs looks promising, the whole B2P option and fantasy theme make it a sound and safe bet for investors, article writers and awards. But whatever the outcome is, I'm going to be a very happy mmorpg fan that will enjoy both for several months.

Feel the same way about secret world tho gw 2 isnt what i thought it would be atleast not for now, never thought that this the secret world would work out for me didnt like it at all in closed betas last year or so and weekends but i did play bit more and was hooked . Tho i am still in the first zones so praying things arent messed up later on . Was realy hyped for gw 2 and also played the game few times at last gamescom convention in germany , but the gw2 weekends where realy not what i thought it would be .

Performance was realy bad for me on all gw 2 beta weekends and running pretty decent setup (gtx 580 , 16 gig ram and i7) , i did hear they where working on it tho now i am worried about it since if it was a easy fix they would have done it already for the weekends , also i didnt feel attached to my char for some reason the movement / fighting did feel very random in gw2 in my oppinion.

Only downside so far from secret world are the animations but after a few days i am starting to get used to them to but the overal feeling , quest etc are something i did miss since swg and earlyer games before that . ( sorry for bad english , bottle of wine and its getting late ;)

Disagree. I think in other years it'd have made a big chance for GOTY, but sure, with GW2 that'll be different. GW2 is more mainstream popular than TSW will be.

The game has it's flaws but its mad fun and I'm really enjoying it however the GW2 fanboys will do anything to get their GOTY award.

The games that are hyped the most i will avoid until it's out 7 months.

TSW sounds more imteresting to me then GW2 right now for the only reason GW2 seems to be just another over hyped themepark level based PVP focused niche MMO.

I'm sure GW2 will do well but, but it's just not something i'm interested in or will be.

The Secret World is a good game, but there is no way it should be anywhere near a GOTY title. It breaks the mould a bit finally so there is no sniff of a WoW clone but it will not be the best game to come out this year by a long shot.

i doubt gw2 will win game of the year.sure,it will do good.but i doubt half of the people right now hyping the game up will stick with it,i guess swtor wasnt a good enough example of hype doesnt make a good mmo

TSW is light years ahead of SWTOR. I was hyped more than anyone for SWTOR but it was filled with corridors, no quests were any different to the norm just your quest text was delivered in a cutscene where you had some choice over what you said.

At least the locations in TSW feel alive, everywhere in SWTOR was a ghost town.

i wouldnt really call tsw that great of a mmo eather.if you dont remember, funcom is the same company that made age of conan and looked at where that headed

this year just doesnt really seem like the greatest year for mmos.but meh, theres still hope that gw2 wont suck

Even though I'm not on board with the game due to subscriptions, I REALLY hope this game succeeds. It seems this year the genre is FINALLY moving into the next decade of gaming. I'm sick of this GW2 vs TSW crap...I'm rooting for both because they're both moving this genre into future.

Not sure if it will win GotY, but in the end, who gives a crap? Outside of Portal1 & 2, FO:3, and Skyrim, none of my favorite games are GotY. However, they're still some of the best experiences I've ever had.

    Have fun with TSW, peeps!

Off-topic: Illuminati are obviously better than Dragon and Templars. Just Saiyan.

"As you read these words, a release is seven days or less away or has just happened within the last seven days— those are now the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria."...Guild Wars 2

Great point: I think it looks like the MMO scene is in motion again. Upcoming MMO's offer more diverse gameplay and styles than they used to.
  • User ratings are useless, so these can be safely ignored. That being said, the critic ratings so far are good as well. Unfortunately they also tend to not be worth much when it comes to MMOs, as the critics haven't the time to fully review them. In short I guess we'll have to wait and see. No way to tell right now how things will turn out.

But at least the forums here seem surprisingly positive, so that could be a good indication of the game.

May very well be. GW2 has to be beyong this world in quality to overdo TSW

  • rpgalonrpgalon Member Posts: 430

    well..., it has my vote.

I dont think it will win Game of the year dont get me wrong i think its an awesome game..

But its has to go up against SP games as well and i think there has been some awesome games released this year.

Could it get new MMORPG Game of the year or whatever they call it... could do i dont see anything else being released this year that will be better than it... will have to wait and see.

for me it shares the title with GW2 already - and GW2 has to lay down such an incredibly smooth launch first ...

If you like either of the 2 niche MMO's coming then yes a good year it has been if neither appeal to you and the late 2011 SWTOR was a failiure then it has been a terrible year,  over 500million dollars worth of MMO's made and not one with any appeal.

Choosing TSW 2012 GOTY is more boneheaded than last years TOR GOTY 2011. Atleast TOR had the initial sub count to justify it, kinda.

I really wish we'd stop this GOTY nonsense... It's only July (barely) FFS.

The rating for The Secret World will plummet after this first week. I've been around MMORPG.com for a decade now and every new MMO that comes out yields a bunch of people freaking out about how good it is.

The Secret World stands no chance.
