welp, it was fun while it lasted. but after getting to inferno on one of my characters, ive completely lost interest in D3. the gear treadmill, and overall gear dependency is making me feel nauseous. everything revolves around grinding for gear, and i can see how theyre gonna earn millions more from desperate/impatient addicts when the RMAH goes online. i was suprised to see that absolutely nothing changes between Hell and Inferno, except for some number adjustments. once you acquire the needed gear, the game becomes easy once again. NM and Hell were a JOKE with semi-decent gear, and inferno is exactly the same, except it takes longer to gear up.

anyway, im getting some serious hankering for GW2. ANet perfectly captured what it feels like to advance in the game using skill and different builds, not gear ALONE. SC2 left me wanting more, and D3 may be the last Blizz game I end up buying, seeing how most of the talent has left the company (or working on Titan). back to BF3 and DOTA2 for me.

OK seriously - you got D3 and didn't expect it to be a gear grind....? That's like, EXACTLY what D2 was (and it worked).

maybe he expect it to evolve a little bit given its 12 year in the making sequel (well technically 4 with the new team). Or maybe the OP is finally reaching that point, where he realizes that gear grind on its own shouldn't be the driving force behind playing a game, but the shear pleasure of just playing aka having fun.

I know right! Gear is what the Diablo series is all about.

Gear treadmill is not a surprise, it's got Blizzard written all over it.

That formula worked for WoW, which to this date gives them a shipload of money, why wouldn't they apply it to Diablo?

At first I was surprised that so many people had no idea what the core mechanics of the game were.

Now I am starting to feel a little sorry for people that never played Diablo before and had no idea what they were buying.

Anyways, there is no reason to "quit" D3. It's not like an mmo. If you ever feel like some fun hack and slash gameplay down the road, D3 will be there waiting for you.

actually, Inferno is pretty faceroll on my Wizard. mind you i grinded gear and used the AH liberally to gear up beforehand. if you find Inferno challenging, then i suggest you grind more.

because it makes the game overly easy? you'd think they learned something and realized that once one has all the necessary gear, the game becomes trivial until the next xpac. you'd think the game would be about something else, in addition to gear grinding.

and this wasnt a surpise by any means. it was the fact that...just the numbers (not behaviour for instance) are tweaked, in addition to elites have extra attacks, i.e. spamming plague/molten everywhere in addition to freeze and vampiric. all im saying: advancement premised solely on gear grind, meh, me quit

This sums up my feelings. Thats like saying you "quit" Zelda OOT, or you quit a book after you're done reading.  There is no monthly fee, you can pick up or put down the game whenever you like and it won't cost you a penny.

That said, I have yet to play the game.  Sitting on my desktop yet to be opened.  Wonderful problem having too many games to play.

Actually, I was referring to their financial strategy. Grinding in WoW makes people play longer and grinding in D3 encourages use of the RMAH, therefore grinding is what gives them profit.

But yes, I understand where you're coming from, I'm sure they could've given the difficulty modes a little more thought

Diablo2 wasn't a gear grind... you rushed to 70ish in a day, got a shako, and pked~ or mfed... or chatted with ppl in bnet, or organized runs with others, or stole loot from hammer paladin bots in their baal runs.

Diablo 3 is terrifying with its blatant dps stat, linear everything, and lvl 60 cap (wouldn't be surprised if they increased level cap with each expansion, lol) after all, the game's a stripped D2 and WoW, like instances and grinding for gear? Well, enjoy playing with 3 other people as you farm for stuff.

sadly and positively that's a thing both with torchlight 2 and D3, ultimately farming for equips in a group is ideal since everyone has separate loot. meh.

If you don't find the core gameplay fun, and find yourself focusing on topics like "is it a gear grind?", then Diablo is definitely not for you. Not Diablo 3, not any game in the Diablo series.

Luckily, I do find the core gameplay fun. I played Diablo 2 for years because of the gameplay, and I think Diablo 3 has refined it to a much higher level.

They haven't refined the series nor the gear system of Diablo.

They added primary stats to every peice of gear. Thats a backstep for the Diablo series and a clear transfer from WoW. I LOVED Diablo and Diablo 2 .... because there wasn't a gear progression. In Diablo 3 you literally have tiers of gear, with gear checks in each difficulty and then each Act in Inferno. It's a bastardization of the enjoyable system Diablo and Diablo 2 had. The plethora of builds we were supposed to be able to run, were a blatant fabrication. There is one or two builds that is effective end game, arguably less builds than Diablo 2. The whole damn game absolutely reaks of WoW.

I've got an Inferno geared monk, able to farm Act1 easily and Act 2 with some effort ; two weeks into the game .... and I'm tired of smashing my head against the wall. Horrible bastardization of the Diablo series, the game is not a backstep for the series ... its a mistranslation.

You guys are kind of misunderstanding what him and others are complaining about. Ill try and explain it a bit.

In D2 you had hunting for those special Uniques and Sets because they gave you nice bonuses, looked badass, and more importantly for the most part a lot of those things were very well suited for specific builds or performing specific roles (like MFing with Tal Rasha's and stuff). This gear basically had the same stats all the time, just different numbers on the stats so you knew what gear to go with for your builds. But aside from that gear you could still manage to get by with some decent yellows and even good blues. These yellows and blues also tended to have stats suitable to the type of gear.

In D3 you have the difference of pretty much hitting a brick wall if you dont have certain gear/stats. Dont have that stuff and you really dont stand a chance of getting by in the higher difficulties. So youre forced to either keep repeating content hoping for some drops, wasting a bunch of money crafting only to get completely random stats that the majority of the time are useless and/or make no real sense to be ont hat type of gear. Then with the sets and uniques, the random stats, as well as so many useless stats tied to the gear, make most of them less desirable than blues and yellows. Theres no more of that "Hell yeah i got this WF for my Bowazon!", instead it's more like "Hmm i got this legendary 2 handed sword for my barb... oh nevermind it has 100 Int on it and no Str. Guess i should go see if I can find a yellow with the same DPS and 200 Str on the AH"

I guess to sum it up... It's gone from hunting for specific uniques/sets for your build/purpose to just blindly flailing about the game hoping some random thing with stats you could actually use for ANY build for your class might pop out of somethings ass.

I get why they did it, they did it to mak the AH more needed, which is great for them and the RMAH.... but putting too much focus on having that AH is quickly killing the game for many people, both here and on the official forums, and making actually playing and progressing less fun than just getting what you need on the AH.

^ this pretty much. i mean, im not from another planet here...I enjoyed the crap out of LoD, and i was wondering why i didnt get the same feeling with D3. this is why. too bad because i really enjoy the fluid combat and the rune system.

So certain gear/stats is bad, but certain unique item is good?

I'm sorry but everyone trying to get the same exact unique item is boring.

the only thing that sucks is these guys cleverly suckered me into paying the $60. theyre tricky bastards, because all seems well and good until you hit inferno and truly notice how the game has been WoW-ified, and overall polluted by the RMAH pursuit. i did well in Act 4 Hell, and all of a sudden i need certain gear level to not get one-shotted by an elite in Act 1 inferno. riiiiiight. there IS NO transition. you basically have to use the AH. and my friends start talking about how they want to buy gear using RMT so they can "play inferno" >.<

I'm definitely not motivated ro struggle through Inferno.  I've drastically cut back my playing time and see no rush to "finish" Inferno or get Godly gear.  I'll probably casually grind gold and maybe level other characters.  In a few months there will probably be tons of good, not godly, gear in the gold AH for cheap prices.

I don't see the point in leveling blacksmithing and that's a shame.  The community is non existent at the moment, hopefully they address that.

Im under 30 and i use blacksmithing to make off gear (like for my follows) and i can make some yellow gear, which i definately use...and found that as i level up the stats ont he gear i make reflect the level im at...so if i make a set of fillers at 25 i can make the same stuff at 27 and it will be slightly better.

Other than that its just a sink for magic/rare gear, i can possibly see it being worth it at the end, i just use it for the trip there. Dont really get the AH function in the game since the point of playing is to get the gear....why would you bypass that with cash?

I think the problem with most of you is that you're expecting Diablo to be similar to your precious MMOs. Well it's not. And complaining that D3 is a gear grind? Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. The Diablo series are the very definition of gear grind. Did any of you play Diablo 2?

Don't you get tired of complaining about the same things? We get it, you hate Blizzard and you love making the WoW comparison. Why do you guys always need meaning to play? What's with the whole "what's the point of playing?"? Isn't it enough to have fun?

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

Like others have lightly hinted on, the true problem is inferno isn't difficult at the moment. It's just stupid. They equated difficulty to adding 0's to damage and health. It's all about getting one shot, 2 shot, or if your lucky 3 shot over and over. Often packs can be impossible because of the fully random ability setup. I enjoy the ability setup but basically if you want to play you have to kite from an extreme distance on account of nigh impossible combinations. Everytime a clever build is come up with Blizzard nerfs it to death. (As some may know, FA and CM are now complete garbage).

Inferno doesn't require player skill so much as the boring ass gear system. Yes, extremely boring, if you need me to explain, your either not in Inferno or just haven't been playing long enough. Believe me, it will become blatantly obvious soon. Also those who haven't played in Inferno take the troll route with garbage like "your supposed to farm gear" "your just terrible" "they didn't want us to beat Inferno in a week". All of this is just ignorance. It's true they didn't want us to beat it so fast but thats because they suck and are extremely butthurt (they being Blizzard whos "internal team" couldn't do shit in Inferno).

Currently blizzard is just shoving weapon damage, +mainstat +vit +resists down our throats. Any build that worked without this stuff has been effectively nerf hammered. I could go on and on but :

tl;dr Play Inferno for a while, you'll learn quickly its just boring kiting, 99% shitty gear (why am I getting sub 60 gear in a lvl 60 only difficulty...?), and, very sadly, many flaws will become blatantly apparent.

See, that's my whole point. You obviously don't find the actual gameplay entertaining if you're obsessing over whether there are tiers of gear or not, whether there are primary stats on gear, etc. etc.

Diablo 2's character development was horrible. The gear system was horrifically unbalanced, with the insane power of some items and runewords that you could easily spend your whole life playing without ever seeing one drop. You could not say a single nice word about the story. There were a million nits you could pick if the gameplay wasn't fun - but it was. Fun enough that I could play for years despite all those faults.

Obviously it's only been weeks since D3 launched, not years, but the core gameplay is better than D2. The pace and physicality of the action is what makes it for me.
